So i have been hearing a lot about the new mortal kombat game and it sounds really good, but i have never been a huge fan of fighting games. i mean i used to play the old mk games on sega but ive always sucked at them and these days am really not that into fighting games at all. i also dont really like online play (not that it matters, considering i have a ps3) and i dont usually have people over to play video games so it would probably be mainly the story mode id be playing, which i hear is pretty long anyway. is this game worth getting for me, or are fighting game fans
the only people who will enjoy it much? i mean it seems like an obvious question but i dont like rts but i loved star craft 2

No it will not... at least not in Australia... since it was banned!!! RAAAAAWR!!!

sorry, ahem. Uh... No I believe it won't, it's just another fighting game with a twist, they all have a twist nowadays.

Gamers will spread out and play what they feel like playing just like the past generations have.

I was wondering the same. The main reason I don't buy fighting games is because I just can't remember and execute those combos. Especially the directional thingies I keep messing up.

And from what I've seen in the demo, Mortal Kombat isn't that different in that perspective. But maybe a fan of the game could convince me otherwise. It looks damn fun.

To illustrate, I suffer from this:

It's really really really good. The most Kontent a fighter can have. Though be prepared for some lag online and horrible, horrible cheap players.

MK isn't a fighting game in the sense people use when they speak about games such as street fighter, blazblue, guilty gear, king of fighters, arcana heart, marvel vs capcom, so on and so on.

It's a gimmicky gory game for casual gamers who don't wanna invest a long time in games and just wanna pick up the controller and mash into mildly funny/cool/over the top action. I could give you more in-depth explanations as to why the systems it has make this fact come to place but since you don't play fighters they wouldn't make much sense anyways. It basically has a ton of single player content, which you'll blow through once or twice and be done with it, but the battle engine, the thing that gives games like guilty gear accent core a following that has lasted over 6 years now, is shallow and easily exploitable with no real push to make you want to get better.

Just think of this as basically a super smash brothers game with gore replacing nintendo favorites as the gimmick of the day.

edit: For non-fans who wanna get taught how to play by a game, try Blazblue: Continuum Shift. It has the most extensive tutorials of any fighter out there, it can turn you from an ignorant scrub into a self-knowing scrub...and that is the best kind of scrub you want to be! :p

Quoted for truth. I played it and was back on Super Street Fighter 4 the next day, MK was sold on.

I mean, I nostalgia'd for like an hour or so, that "woopie!" chirping dude that popped up gave me and instant smile and whatnot...but yeah, it was shallow as hell, the features felt like they took a smorgasbord of "features for fighters" and just desperately threw them together without any thought of the whole game working or not and prayed it would work...in like a week people found ways to repeatedly use x-ray counters which you're supposed to maybe get 2 of if you lose a round...the game was just not tested nearly well enough in terms of serious play.

Well im the exception then! playasia FTW
Exception to what...? I never mentioned any of us not having it, I'm just stating that our government is a bunch of asshol- uh... silly people...

I myself have the game as well, like every other Aussie gamer has. The government said they'd block copies from coming in, and they couldn't even do that... worthless...

Oh well, worked out on our part I guess.

I enjoy the game and it is the best MK since UMK3/MKT, but it's not something I'd play at a tournament.

Maybe MK10 - if it follows MK9 with some much needed improvements.
---Seriously, I've actually been able to upper-cut with almost half a screen a way, wtf?

Still one of the best games I've played on the 360 in some times.

Not at all.

And if you suck at fighting games, then this game will most likely eat you. It's hard.

Its a fun fighter, but I found during the story mode, the AI decides its either completely retarded or amazingly good. Also, the game likes to ensure that ITS NEVER A FAIR FIGHT! But aside from that, I enjoyed it.

Mortal Kombat 9 has seemed to have gone back to when you dont need to know a huge hit combo to win the game. The special moves are rather easy to pick and the x-ray moves are really easy to do.

I really enjoyed the game as i pick up a few fighting games and only play them casually i havent got enough time or intrest to practive big "ultra massive button press combo" that has been slowly putting me off of fighting games. So if someone wants to get into a fighter that has not got an insane difficulty curve or just wants a game where you can kick people around the scream with knowing huge amonts of moves i think mk9 will be a plesant entrance to the beat em up genre.

I loled then went back to kicking everyone's ass with smoke

(also fuck unlimited Ragna >.>)
Just cause you can be good at something it doesn't mean that the thing you're good at is actually worthwhile.

You can kick your friend's asses in a variety of stupid or pointless activities, it's not a testament of those activities' quality, just of your skill at stupid activities...which I wouldn't really brag about if I were you.

It's like saying "I'm really good at killing babies!!!"...well...yeah...but killing babies still is bad, no matter how much skill at it you may or may not posses or how much better than your friend baby-killers you may be lol.

(and who even plays with unlimiteds man, they're just for messing around, not for serious play, Ragna isn't as bad as Hazama anyways)

If you already dislike fighting games, I highly doubt it will change your mind. Now, if you're somewhat interested in the genre and want to know if it will turn you into a fighting fan, it may very well do so.

It's very easy to pick up and learn, assuming you get a move list so you don't have to go to the pause menu every ten seconds during practice. Even without, you can become adept with at least one character before losing patience.

It isn't as deep as the other well-known fighting games (Smash Brothers not included), but as far as this genre goes, it doesn't require you sink a tremendous amount of time into it before you stop sucking. And it's fun. I grew up cutting my teeth on the likes of Tekken and Street Fighter, despising the Mortal Kombat series' clumsiness, and even I'm satisfied with it.

In the sense that it got me interested in the genre, then when I actually went shopping I picked up Blazblue Continuum Shift for a third the price.
