I guess I'm just disappointed that there's a wide frontier of gaming tech out there in front of us and more people are saying "no, just make it smaller." Fuck those guys.

Yes, this is very annoying and apple does this a lot as well. Wasn't it Movie Bob who had a whole video about the space program and mentioned that society is more interested in making smaller MP3 players than getting into space? I would rather get into space than for Apple to remake the bloody ipod.

Thats 3 million plus the X million on Battle.net. Remember there is more to PC gaming than Steam. Also compare it to the X million of XBL and PSN accounts logged on. Just stating the facts.

Explain to me why PC gaming is dead. If it was Steam wouldn't be making 960 million a year would it. PC gaming is strong and continues to get support from most developers. DICE is making Battlefield 3 with a PC first mindset. If PC gaming was dead then there would be no point to it. Steam and other digital distributors will have also gone by now.

...There is only one remaining PC exclusive AAA developer,(Blizzard) and they might soon cave.
According to Michael Pachter PC game sales are 7% of total game sales.
Find me evidence of these supposed mounds of cash Steam is raking in. Profits, not sales numbers alone.

OT: PC gaming isn't dying. Did it take a wound for a few years? Sure, but it's recovering with the help of Steam and an all-around better community online. And devs are starting to look towards making the PC their main platform.

Okay let us view this topic like this; Do you think PC are going to thrive or dive? I bet most of us will answer "HELL NO", or some kind response like that. So as long as PCs themselves stay around, people will probably play some kind of game on them, video game companies will gain money and continue to produce games for the PC.

Now consoles themselves will have to become more PC like to survive. In a world where people want their devices to have more functions, consoles will need to adapt and be able to satisfy more needs. Consoles will need to evolve, and their evolution I bet you, will take them to become PCs themselves. From that we will just have more brands of PCs to choose from. Sony will have the PS PC, along with their Vaio brand, maybe. Microsoft will have the Xbox PC. Nintendo... might just die off...I don't know I can't predict everything.

Similar to how people call Apple computers "Macs" but at the end of the day, you bought a restricted PC. I personally don't see the mouse/keyboard use for console games catching on too well since a lot console users, and fanboys, will argue that controllers are infinitely better and refuse to adapt. Whereas PC gamers like me prefer a keyboard, but will use whatever is available.

Thrive methinks. Even if I don't have the proper equipment for PC gaming, spending time on Steam makes it apparent that PC gamers have got their shit together. It comes with usual downsides, just like console gaming but other than that, it seems to have no reason to dive.

I rather doubt consoles or PCs will die any time soon. Both have a massive market, as evidenced by Call of Duty's sales figures and World of Warcraft's profits. And as long as they continue to have a market, they'll exist in some form. Now, those markets may change, or even grow smaller, but I think it's quite premature to say either type of platform is dying anytime soon.

The death of PC gaming has been greatly exaggerated. There was a short period there after this generation of consoles came out where PC was on the decline, but the hardware has once again vastly surpassed that of the consoles. PC gaming is once again thriving.

The advantages of PC gaming are pretty obvious. Mouse and keyboard, huge hardware advances since the newest consoles launched, and a much larger community of modding, leading to longer lifespans for PC games. Those are just a few of many advantages.

PC gaming is in my mind only to go forward, not in the direction I'd like, but still forward. That's because unfortunately, social gaming is a massive demographic, and it's only growing larger. Almost everyone owns a computer by default but don't game due to their computer lacking the capability to run "proper" games, but any piece of junk can run a simple flash game. That's still PC gaming, its just shit. There will always be true PC gamers, but I think they're becoming less.

it's not gonna die, but it will change. console gaming will die, not because i don't like consoles but because they serve one purpose: gaming. Fever and fever people will be willing to pay a lot of money for that. Oh and i think that what a lot of people think of when they hear PC-gaming(Desk, keyboard, mouse, monitor, tower) will die because we will just plug a mouse/gamepad into whatever portable computer we are using and go for it.

so console gaming will die, so will dedicated gaming PCs.




i always find it funny how people who don't concern themselves with PC gaming keep saying that nobody develops exclusively for PC anymore. common people, of course you wouldn't know small developers since it's impossible to break to break into the console market with little money if you don't want to make artsy 2d platformers.

Oh lord, oh lord. Unwritten rules of the Escapist, no Vs. threads, no threads about PC gaming dying or anything like that, and no threads of PC vs. console. Mods don't take well to flame wars.

There isn't really a good option for supporting PC on here, and personally I think it is the ONLY way the industry has to move forward. Making consoles was okay when the standard tech was too low to support anything, But EVERYTHING is getting cheaper. Soon I doubt that, as long as the industry realized that this is beneficial to them too, games will be getting that much more computer intensive.

Every game that I have player on both a PC and a game system, I love the PC version to much more, it really makes me sad to have wasted the money on the console version. Sure, the controller can be nice, but those can be attacked to a PC anyways, and really, why bother wasting my time with bugs that can't be fixed, and never do, than games that get patched often, and usually well.

Meh, the only way consoles will die is if hardware prices get so low that selling a console at a loss won't lower it's price by enough of a margin to matter and if the number of exclusives go down by a lot.

And PC gaming will never die because the PC will always be the main computing device used for work, internet etc, even if it's form might change from a giant tower to something smaller or not.

The only thing that will happen is that casual gaming will become bigger then anything else because it's more socially acceptable... and of course as anything that's mainstream it might just be a fad that will eventually die out.

No, what really happened was that console gaming exploded in the mainstream, mostly with shooter, and PC didn't benefit from that surge, but it was still growing, just not as much and as fast as console games.
