So given that everyone talks about Steam on PC, and that they released steam for PS3 and have apps also recently launched big picture. Will it end up taking over the gaming world and be the go to choice for buying knew games and getting into a community? or will some other piece of software steal the crown from Valve?

Ya know...I think it just might.

Anybody else noticing that Steam is getting...bigger lately? I don't think its a bad think but boy this service is starting to rack in the games and services.

Not everyone wants all of their games to be digital. I prefer my physical games. As long as people like me exist, I don't think Steam will take over the world. It'll become a big big service, but won't take over the world.

I used to be like you wanting the disc but then i realized discs break then your fucked whereas on steam I can royally bone the crap out of it and then re download it for free which seems to be the general opinion i can see physical games dying out in the next 5-10 years because of stuff like on live (i know it died its just the concept it had) and steam

I dunno. I think digital distribution will become the primary way games are distributed in a few years, but it's the primary way music is distributed, too and people still buy CDs and even Vinyl.

Of course, a future generation of consoles could ditch physical media but I'm willing to bet that there would be a huge outcry and people would still be buying boxed PC games.

I don't have to worry about my games getting broken. I am what appears to be one of the few people in the world that actually takes care of their games. Treat your equipment well, it'll treat you well.

i never see vinyl now, mainly for collectors and nostalgia id imagine but in 5-10 years i doubt cd's will be absolute primary and 15-20 may be completely obsolete unless some radical new tech comes out lol blu ray is just capacity it lets you store more information on the disc so can contain HD formats hence why HD DVD existed.

Steam is worthless to me. I don't have a good download limit so i can't download anything worthwhile. I play games elsewhere so i need a physical copy to take with me and also to lend to my friends. I trade games in to make them cheaper which i can't do with steam. I also have issues with putting my credit card details online when so many large companies get hacked.

As long as there are people like me it won't take over but it will probably take the market share.

"I take care of my hard drive but eventually it'll die." Your argument goes both ways.

A game disk doesn't suddenly go bad. Nor does a game cart. Game carts will eventually need their internal batteries replaced IF you want to continue saving on that specific cartridge. But they take a long time before they die. I still have Gameboy Color games that are fully functional, saving and all.

As for game disks, they don't need power at all. They simply contain the game, which is read by the game console. A game disk is not going to die. Ever. Unless you mistreat your equipment.

Edit: Fixed some grammar issues. My typing is so off tonight. .-.

Almost every one of my friends has steam, it really is quite an ingenious idea, not only does it bring reasonably priced games to the masses but it also gives third-party developers the opportunity to get their games out there. It also has a ton of social features packed into it so one doesn't have to be a shut in gamer.

thats what people used to do which is generally starting to stop also you can tell steam not to remember ure card details dno if they store it somewhere else but doubt it

but a HDD lasts a lot longer because you dont have to keep taking the disc inside out (also my point is u can redownload them onto a new hdd/ssd for free instead of buying a new disc) and theres the off chance the disc can shatter in high speed cd/dvd drives its been known to happen but not often and most people arnt as carefull with discs so people will opt for the care free download option think its legal to download the game online via torrents as long as you have bought it

third party devs have to prove people will buy it via greenlight though. but ye i like steam because it incorporates a lot into one process which is why i dont like origin games they have to have origin open and with bf3 u have to have a browser open to

Yeah, and it's also possible for your Steam/Origin account to get permanently banned, thus causing all of your games and money to go ByeBye. Which is a vastly bigger problem than having one disc shatter(at least, by scale of the problem in and of itself).

Disc shattering is only a real problem if you insist on bumping your drive up to 52X speeds, or if you're foolish enough to fit a damaged product into the drive. Danger of your disc shattering inside the drive is only significant at speeds above 48X, and not to mention that a lot of companies deliberately slow their drives to 40X speeds. At speeds like that, a crack in the disc(such as one on the very inner ring of the disc) will run into the disc media and most times, an error will occur and will not run. Ergo, you are in no danger of the disc shattering in your drive.

The likelyhood of an Xbox 360, Wii or PS3 shattering their discs? Next to none.

I'm not out to prove that console gaming is better than PC gaming, I just don't believe that PC gaming is better than console gaming. Like how a white man is no better than a black man, or vice versa.

Consoles are BUILT for ease of use. Convenience. Precautions against the problems you have listed have already been taken care of.

It all boils down to taking care of your equipment. Keep it clean and treat it well, and it'll last however long you need it to.

1 if you get banned thats your own fault if you dont want your games gone dont do anything to get banned it aint hard lol. 2 steam is allready on consoles so that invalidates the console is better then pc part dnt bring race into it in any form this is just a discussion that shouldnt have anything related to that i really dont know why you brought up consoles and pc cuz it has nothing to do with the op steam is on both platforms
