Oh, no. I hope not, I fucking hate Steam sometimes, when trying to play my online games in peace and then this Steam thing gets in my way of just playing a FREAKING GAME alone.

I dont think its REALLY horrible, but its not nearly as good as everyone make it out to be, such an invasive, personal space invader program shouldt take the world!

Not if thoughtful, logical consumers have anything to say abo... oh wait, those are a miniscule minority? Yeah, looks like we will all have to wallow in suffering when it does. WTG. Thanks steam, for making gaming suck just a little bit more.

/sigh. Can only hope GOG catches on and catches up

Yeah, and it's also possible for your Steam/Origin account to get permanently banned, thus causing all of your games and money to go ByeBye. Which is a vastly bigger problem than having one disc shatter(at least, by scale of the problem in and of itself).

Disc shattering is only a real problem if you insist on bumping your drive up to 52X speeds, or if you're foolish enough to fit a damaged product into the drive. Danger of your disc shattering inside the drive is only significant at speeds above 48X, and not to mention that a lot of companies deliberately slow their drives to 40X speeds. At speeds like that, a crack in the disc(such as one on the very inner ring of the disc) will run into the disc media and most times, an error will occur and will not run. Thus, you are in no danger of the disc shattering in your drive.

The likelyhood of an Xbox 360, Wii or PS3 shattering their discs? Next to none.

I'm not out to prove that console gaming is better than PC gaming, I just don't believe that PC gaming is better than console gaming. Like how a white man is no better than a black man, or vice versa.

Consoles are BUILT for ease of use. Convenience. Precautions against the problems you have listed have already been taken care of.

It all boils down to taking care of your equipment. Keep it clean and treat it well, and it'll last however long you need it to.
1 if you get banned thats your own fault if you dont want your games gone dont do anything to get banned it aint hard lol. 2 steam is allready on consoles so that invalidates the console is better then pc part dnt bring race into it in any form this is just a discussion that shouldnt have anything related to that i really dont know why you brought up consoles and pc cuz it has nothing to do with the op steam is on both platforms
It was a comparison, because my statement can be taken as confusing by some people, I simply wanted to make it clearer. To show it was about equality. That pc gaming isn't better than console gaming, nor is console gaming better than pc gaming. The case with pc-console, however, is that they've both got pros, and they've both got cons.

And Steam is currently on PS3 in the form of cross-platform play. Which, as far as I know, only Portal 2 actually utilizes it. Actually, Portal 2 is the whole reason that's there. Nowhere did I say that console gaming is better than PC.

And yeah, you will only get your account banned if you're stupid enough to do something that warrants getting it banned. But you're missing the entire point of me having said that:

It's still possible for your account to get banned and you lose all those games you paid for.

The likelihood of this happening is very small indeed, but ironically, much larger than having a disc shatter inside a Wii, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Not everyone wants all of their games to be digital. I prefer my physical games. As long as people like me exist, I don't think Steam will take over the world. It'll become a big big service, but won't take over the world.
In 20 years you'll be fossilised. Whether Steam is still around by then or not remains to be seen, but completely digital stuff will have 'taken over the world', most definitely.

Being banned from Origin or Steam doesn't really matter though, does it? It's a pain, I'm sure, but it's not like you can't play games you've bought any more. (Shifty eyes are implied, here, obviously. Although mods, you could just tell me if this a problematic suggestion instead of insta-banning me; I'm not saying go nuts and pirate shit without having actually paid for it.)

This doesn't really have anything to do with what you two are bickering about, that point in particular just interests me.

I'm pretty sure that if your Steam/Origin account gets banned, all games you bought with that account are lost. Seeing as you can't, you know, access the account.

And I won't be fossilized, even if digital distribution becomes a primary market, physical games are not going to simply disappear. Have music albums on physical discs disappear? No? Case and point, friend.

Christ, my typing. I think I'm going to hit the hay. All I've done is defend my opinion everyone else's scrutiny. Badger someone else that isn't saying it'll take over the world.

Not quite. They will, obviously. Which is what I said: 'will', not 'have'. (Although have you looked at a PC shelf in a gaming store, recently?)

And take a hint. As long as you've paid for your shit there's hardly any moral objection to reacquiring it elsewhere. You just won't have it neatly accessible through Steam.

Wait, they released Steam for the PS3?? When was this??

I mean, I knew that with Portal 2, you could get the PC version for free if you used a code from the PS3 version, but I never knew about this.

So does Steam on the PS3 basically have all the same features as the PC version? Or are there any differences?

There's no hint to be taken. It doesn't matter if you can acquire your games elsewhere for free or not. The fact of the matter is that if your Steam/Origin account is banned, you can't access those games via Steam or Origin. Meaning that all those games you legally purchased through Steam or Origin are permanently lost, until you make another account and purchase them again, or purchase them for a console, or whatever else. And illegal copies are still illegal whether you've previously purchased the game or not. It has nothing to do with morality.

Steam is only on the PS3 through Portal 2, currently. It's there purely for cross-platform play between the PS3 and PC versions of Portal 2.

Yeah, in an attempt to make my own argument appear incapable of holding water, which isn't at all the case.

No, I was just pointing out that you were wrong about what I said - and I'd hate for you to come across as if you were trying to undermine my argument by pretending I'd said things I hadn't.

The bottom line is this: a Steam/Origin ban is an inconvenience at most. That's it. It's certainly not "bye bye money, bye bye games".

You might get picked up for it. I suppose I can't tell you what to do, but the lawsuits that have hit video games are harsher than most of the RIAA ones, so I'm not sure it's worth the risk.

Further, purchasing something has never entitled you to permanent access. You may have "paid your dues," but that gives you no right to access the game.

Finally, are you seriously arguing "it's not illegal unless you're caught?" Because it looks it.

The problem is that it's still illegal. You CAN get picked up for illegal downloading, and if you're caught, the punishment will not be small. My point was that if your accounts are banned, your legal copies are gone. Poof. And thus, your money spent on legal copies of the game which can be downloaded without the risk of being prosecuted for illegal downloading.

Only time I've ever seen anyone get picked up for it is when companies have basically blackmailed people they think have done it. And that itself is a legal grey area at best.

And no, I'm saying that there's rather nonsensical legality shit at play, but since it's rarely enforced (and even then, you'd have to be the one seeding these things to X amount of people) and you have already paid, losing your Steam account is hardly the end of the world. My Steam account's fine. I have no reason to do it, and I can't stand people who think they're owed free shit when people have worked on it. But you see my point. What's fair and what's legal don't always match up.

I mean, we are consumers, we're allowed to argue against things that negatively impact us as consumers.
