I plan on getting Bioshock Infinite when it is released. I pre-ordered the Ultimate Song Bird Edition for the PC. The game looks like it will be really good.

Probably not. The first one was pretty good, but I was turned off of it because I got screwed with the ending. That and I've come across far too many people who think it's the greatest game ever. I wholeheartedly disagree.

Anyway, I didn't play the second one because most people said it wasn't good. If everyone says this one is amazing, I might pick it up when it gets a price drop.

No. Bioshock was a shallow, unbalanced shooter with an unnecessarily good story and inconsistent visuals with bad level design. Bioshock 2 was everything terrible about the first game expanded.
So no.
If it is good, great, if it's as mediocre as the two preceding games, well, I've lost nothing.

Maybe?

Bioshock had a great story/environment but the gameplay was only decent.

Bioshock 2 was completely forgettable and barely worth the $5.00 steam sale purchase.

There is no way I'll pay full price for Bioshock 3.
The environment once again intrigues me but I'm concerned that it maybe flat and stale like #2. Realistically it's going to be a $10.00 steam sale purchase down the road barring poor reviews in which case I'll just pass on it altogether.

I see the franchise as a one-hit wonder.

BioShock had no steampunk at all. It's all Art Deco with 1940's technology. Nothing to do with the 19th century steam technology.

If anything, Infinite will be more steampunky in terms of tech. Art direction-wise it's definitely Art Nouveau, fitting with the time.

Anyway, yeah I'm looking forward to BioShock: Infinite a lot.
So glad you pointed that out, saves me the effort.

I'm excited to play the newest installment. Fresh story idea, rather than a rehash of the first game's story. Also to an earlier point the OP made, I rather suspect if you look out the windows of Columbia, you'll see other parts of the city at a higher elevation, you might see storms around and beneath you, you'll certainly see Zeppelins. I somehow doubt that the scenery will be less interesting this time around.

I won't be. But then I never bought Bioshock 2 either, and I never bothered to finish the first game. So read into that what you will.

Same story here except I might still buy Bioshock Infinity since it appears to have no connection to the first 2.

I haven't paid full price for a game in several months now, but infinite will be a day 1 purchase for me followed by a 12 hour gaming marathon with plenty of refreshments. Looking forward to it.

I am WAY too excited for it to not be a day-1 purchase.
Pre-ordered the Ultimate Songbird Edition as well.

Definetely preordering this. The original Bioshock is my favorite game of all time, and I trust Ken Levine to deliver another mind blowing experience. Although i will miss Rapture, i think changing the setting was a good decision. If Infinite sells good it might be a reminder to other developers that they don't have to do exactly the same as in their previous sucsesses to sell a franchise.

Also i would like to remind everyone that Bioshock 2 was not developed by Irrational Games(the studio behind the original) since it seems alot of people in this thread don't know this.

And what is up with people waiting for the price to drop? I have never heard any of my friends talking about waiting for the price to drop before getting a game. If i want a game i will go buy it for the price it is currently at. I wont wait for months to buy a game i want to play just to save 10 bucks.

No.

I love the idea of these worlds Bioshock creates, but it just kills it for me when you've got this amazing place, and they decide that something went wrong and now it's all run down and distopian/ creepy and ghastly. If Bioshock infinite was set on an airborne world that was absolutely bustling with activity and prosperity and had a story that didn't feel the need to be all supernatural and spooky just to hold a player's interest, then I would have been more than happy to sign up for it.

I want to feel like I'm there during the absolute heyday of wherever it is, not after the event/s that screwed everything up just trying to imagine what it was like back in its day.

Bioshock 2 suffered greatly because it tried to follow up Bioshock directly, despite the fact that the first game neither needed, nor really left any opening for a sequel. This, in my opinion, would have been the case even if it had been Irrational that had worked on it.

After I saw my first trailer for Infinite, I immediately started ignoring all press on it, reason being that I thought it looked so intriguing, and didn't want to put myself in a position where I'd seen and heard large chunks of what the game had to offer before it was released. As a result, though, I have no idea why this game still wears the Bioshock label. I don't how it ties to the whole Raputre/Andrew Ryan/Jack/Big Daddy/Little Sister/Adam deal.

That said, I'll be buying it almost immediately for three reasons:

1.) Ken Levine had a hand in it, and anything that man touches deserve consideration.
2.) It wears the Bioshock name, and the first game is easily in my top 5 list.
3.) It isn't trying to be a direct sequel, so I'm interested to see how it ties into the first game. And the second one, I suppose.

Hell, if the game is strong enough on its own merits, it doesn't even need to tie in to the first game. I'd be confused as to why it bears the name Bioshock, but it wouldn't be a deal-breaker for me.

I think in some interview or something they said "BioShock" was an idea, not a place or a story or anything, if that makes sense.

Bioshock 1 I enjoyed immensely, 2 left me cold. I don't think I'm taking a gamble with 3.

I just have to ask, how can a game have an "unnecessarily good story"? Is that just like, "damn, this game's story isn't about terrorists, it's actually interesting, man that's annoying"? Or was it a typo or...?

OT: We'll see. I can think of maybe 5 games I've ever actually finished and both the Bioshocks and Dishonored are three of them (and, I feel, fairly similar in terms of exploration, interaction and general gameplay feel). So I guess I just like that kind of game, a lot.

I don't mean to call you out specifically, but for all the people who are stating that being put off by 2 is the reason they aren't getting 3, I'd like to remind you that the first Bioshock was developed by Ken Levine and the Irrational Games (then 2K Boston) team, whereas 2 was developed by 2K Marin, i.e NOT Ken Levine's team. Infinite is, again, Irrational, so it's not really 'gambling' to state that Infinite will be easily better than 2.

For context, 2K Marin are the team turning XCOM into a tactical shooter. Take that for what you will.

Actually, it would. A lot of underlying themes are similar within the games... Hmm. That's something to think about.

There is a sharp disconnect from the uninteresting gameplay and the above average story.

A few things have me wary - the delays, the scope of the project, so I won't definitively decide until much closer to the release date - but if it's what it looks like it's going to be, count me in. Bioshock 2 never quite grabbed me, but I never expected it would, a return to rapture seemed silly. Infinite, on the other hand, seems more of a spiritual successor in that it's working with different dynamics (voiced PC AND dynamic conversations with an extremely important NPC), working with a whole different period, theme, and style while retaining the same overall feel, it looks like it'll be pretty good - but I'll wait just to be sure.
