Valve's model is the best, since they try to release all of their DLC for free and it's basically paid for by bringing new players to the game.
Yep, Valve does free DLC really well. They pretty much always put a game on sale if new DLC has come out for it, which brings in new players that eventually pay for the development costs of the DLC. Portal 2 got a huge boost from the level creator, same with Left 4 Dead 2 and the newest level pack. OT: personally, I think that simple costume packs or weapon packs should be free, whilst level packs or big multiplayer expansions should not. An example of this is Mass Effect 3's multiplayer packs.

God damnit, CD Projekt. Stop being so... likeable.
I'm onto you. I know you're in league with Valve. You're gonna release the legions of hell to gorge themselves on the souls of all humanity for the rest of eternity, aren't you?
Knowing the gaming community if they simply changed the art style of The Witcher to a casual cel shaded look it would be even worse than what you suggested.

Why aren't more developers/publishers/anybody more like these guys!?

CD Projekt RED should seriously get a medal for this.

They seem to be trying a little too hard to make people like them. They keep coming out just after the community talks about something, to hop on the wagon.
I am glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.

CD Projekt RED is to DLC/DRM as Crytek is to Unreal.

They keep talking shit about it and how they do it SOOO much better, and its gotten to the point were now it just sounds like they are just saying anything they know people want to hear in order to get people to like them.

I like it, but naive developer is naive. Pirates would still have to buy the original game and somehow I think a pirate's pocketbook is more important to them than "sending a message".
Let's not forget that some pirates do just for hell of it.

I got into pc gaming later, so the first dlc I ever encountered were free map packs on Halo2. They were fun, added to the game, kept me playing longer and I appreciated bungie continuing to work at and improve the game even after release. I think the first paid DLC I ran across was in Dragon Age. I talked to some guy with a quest and it turned out you had to buy the DLC to continue. I didn't do it, it added nothing to the game didn't keep me playing any longer and garnered no appreciation in me for Bioware.
I don't feel that every ounce of effort put into a game is mine by right and hate the notion of day one or on disc DLC. I just have not ever bought any. I might be not the target market, but with me, you're far better off doing things that increase my loyalty to your company to ensure future game sales then you are trying to get a few more bucks right now with dlc.

CD Projekt is smart. It's using the carrot approach instead of the stick approach.

I hope it works.

CDProjekt Red is such a great company...plus, who wouldn't want free stuff?

I don't mind buying dlc, but it is nice to have gaming companies thankful of their fans. IT reminds us that they are people and not just another money-grubbing corporation.
