Ok... what's the problem? Because you had to work? Look, he requested and got his days off. Pull up your straps and be a man about it. Maybe you can request 3 days off in the future, but let him have his fun.

he's not at fault, he took off 3 days that he requested and got approved for his birthday party.

saying he's selfish is kinda like me saying you are selfish for not wanting to take the shift that was assigned to you by the managers.

but I'm am definitely not saying you are selfish, i am saying that regardless of reason if he requested 3 days off and got approved he has the right to his leave period. The reason he took the days off shouldn't really be anyone's concern besides the managers.

in short, he is right, if you are going to blame anyone its the person that approves leave and makes schedules, aka the managers.
There is no party. He's going to sit on his ass, and get drunk. Something that doesn't require taking a leave of absence. It's irresponsible and sad. And I'm not going to say that my schedule is always perfect. I have my fair share of complaints, but the manager has to even out the schedule for everyone, so she can't remember every whiny detail from the employees. And I can't just take his shift. I already have to work that morning, and it'll be hell on my part. And sure don't want to get fired over petty things, such as stabbing everyone in sight.

but he is entitled to his leave tho. again, you can ask for anything, if it gets approved thats that...not to sound insensitive, but yet again, its the managers job to handle these things.

i worked in places like that, as supervisor/manager assistant, it was my job to handle it, so yea...

I dont see why someone cant take days off if the management lets them. If I want days off I ask my boss and its up to him to look in the the schedule to see its possible or not. He doesnt even need to know why. Wether its to nurse a relative or to sit on the couch to play videogames all day and jacking off.

I have to agree with that guy here. If the management allowed him to take 3 days off, they mustve thought there were enough people left to handle it. if there wasnt, its clearly their mistake. Im starting to think your just butthurt over the fact he took that time off to have a party while you didnt. Bringing up your grandfather only enforces this.

My work gives you the day of your birthday off as a personal holiday.

But taking three days off just to be drunk all weekend? Dude, if you work the next day, tough shit.

May not have been the nicest thing someone can do, but honestly, if he has unused day-offs he can use them any way he wants as long as the management lets him. I can understand your frustration though.

Depending on the day, I'd probably take the day AFTER my birthday off. If my boss saw me trying to operate with the cataclysmic hangover I would have he would probably just send me home anyways.

Letting your colleagues down for a reason like that is lame. If you don't have the time to party, then too bad, but can't just skip work.
Agreed. It totally fucks everyone else at work and 3 days taken off for anything besides a death in the family is just absurd.

I might try to trade my shift that night, but at my job, we can't just take days off without a good reason. We have to find someone and swap shifts with them, which is luckily very easy.

Where I used to work, there were two other employees that would call in or ask for days off every night that there was some frat party (we lived in a college town) and I would get stuck working their shifts on the weekends, which were always the busiest. What bothered me most was that they would say they were really sick on days that they called in and sometimes it was on days when I was actually sick. Several times I had to work their shifts while I had a stomach virus and spent most of the time puking on my breaks and whenever I had a free minute. Then, the next day they would come in and tell me how awesome the party was the night before.

They also did the three day birthday thing. I worked all my birthdays, worked every night shift on each night before a final, and every single holiday I was scheduled.

Yeah, it sucks having to work on your birthday, but you shouldn't inconvenience your coworkers because you want to have parties. It's ridiculous. So long as I get to have cake on my birthday, I don't care whether I work or not.
