Short answer for those who won't read the part below: I prefer to play the Horde.

The first character I ever made was on the Alliance.
It was a female Lv 55 Night Elf Hunter.
Unfortunately, at that time I was sharing an account with my brother;
who had spent more time and actually got two of his characters to Lv 60 with good gear.
So yeah, my brother ended up getting my hunter and leveling her later on.
I still miss the city of Ironforge...except the lag.

Since making on my own account though every character I've made is on the Horde.
My main character is a Lv 70 male orc shaman...still haven't gotten into any of the Lich King Expansion stuff yet.

My friend, a WoW player, caused me to believe the the names of these factions are misleading. "Alliance," to put it simply, sounds like the "good guys" while the Horde sounds like a mob of angry Lv 70's. According to him, the Alliance started the whole "ganking" thing. I don;t even play the game, but the Horde sounds significantly better, for more reasons than this.

I like playing both, because I'm the rare breed that reads the quests and appreciates the lore. Also, alliances to one faction are as bad as being a diehard fanboy for a video game.

Mug'thol here, btw. I usually play the side of the server that has more people and is more productive. Sue me, but I'd rather deal with all the mankrik's wife jokes so I can actually do some instances.

i quit playing wow cause i realized.... finally that every expansion just made the things i farmed easier to get and replicated them with new colors for new cap
but i was sooo "for the horde!"

Horde have awesome flying mounts but alliance is for me, mainly coz my bro made me role alliance, i just made a new horde bloodelf warlock im gonna get high lvl though, i like alliance aswell coz i have a 80 in it (dwarf DK)

Interesting question actually, as i've been mulling it over a lot recently.

I've always been alliance, but stopped playing a year-ish ago.

Another friend of mine started playing and convinced me and a few other friends to play again on his server...
He's one of those people who are pro-horde almost to the point of fanaticism, so we're playing horde

The overall impression i get from many forums is that horde is generally the more mature side, personally i think it's false, as i've seen equal levels of retardation on some players in equal amounts on both factions.
If anything, i've noticed better behaviour improvements going from PvP to PvE servers than between horde and alliance on either type of server.

content-wise, it's nice playing the horde side of the quests for a change, though i think i slightly prefer the alliance ones overall.

I know this is going to sound really shallow, but it's the character models that get me...

Horde-wise, i'm reduced to 'race i find the least horrible' and the new 'pretty' (blood elves) race they added are just plain annoying/irritating instead.
of the 5 though, the tauren are my favourite, but they don't have my prefered classes (priest/warlock) so i was stuck with undead. getting to higher levels, the 'tattered' look they add to anything an undead wears got annoying.

Alliance-wise i'm spoilt for choice, with my all-time favourite being the Gnomes <3

so i'm kind of alternating between the two factions, horde to play with friends, alliance to have a character i actually like :/

The two weeks I played for free, I was Horde. Because...Green is best? Yeah, 'cause green is best an' weze da Orks!

Wrong orcs I know, but I just loved the orcs when they were under the control of the Burning Legion. When they were all about grab, smashy, kill stuff an all tha'. And not the poor invaders turned refugees they are now.

I'm for the alliance, but I realize that orcs and taurens have some of the best racial skills. Humans have expertise, increased reputation, and every man for himself, though.

On a related topic, I wish you could group up with the other faction for instances. It would make it easier to get into a group.

I don't play WoW, and know nothing about it. The Horde sounds evil though, so I'd have to go with them.

The Alliance are actually the original invaders. The Horde just wanted to live in serenity until the Allies came to fuck it all up.

Anyways, yeah. I played Horde, if only because Tauren are the best race in the game.

Holy shit, this is the best first reply I've ever read.

Anyway, people still don't realize that with homogenization that they're basically the "red team" vs the "blue team."

Hell they hang out in the same fucking cities now (Dalaran, BC it was Shattrath...)

Bad experiences with one faction is exactly the same with the other faction on another battlegroup or server, etc...

Friend of mine is on the Stormstrike battlegroup, Alliance lose AV about 30%/70%, another friend of mine is on the Ruin battlegroup, Alliance Win AV about 80%/20%...

There's not a question of "hardcore/casual" because go to arenajunkies.com and note how top teams in all brackets are varied Ally/Horde, it's not like it's horde for top 1-20 teams...etc. Raiding it depends on the server, really, not the faction.

And everything else doesn't really matter.

So it comes down to where your friends play, what your friends play, what your friends do, really, that influence what faction you'd play. Unless you're misinformed and really think that Alliance are still the "good guys" and Horde are still the "bad guys" when both of them are varying shades of gray.

Personally, I think Dwarves are the coolest playable race that game'll ever have, since I couldn't be a high elf and then they put elves on horde anyway, and I can't be a naga or a dragon. ;P

So, in conclusion, my vote is Alliance when it's really more the "old" alliance, and I liked the "old" horde until they went on some touchy feely refuge friendship bullshit. That is, I liked Alliance before night elves and alien gypsies were part of them, (draenei) and I liked Horde before they went on some "time to save the world guise, lolthrall is da best," and I prefered the demon-controlled bloodthristy shit (ie: Warcraft 2. Everything they did in War3 I have mixed feelings about, and the expansion just got worse, and then WoW just ruined any give-a-shit factor I ever had for any character (ie: "OH YEAH, (name) IS JUST A BAD PERSON NOW, UNDER CONTROL OF DEMONS, YOU GOTTA KILL HER" for anyone I ever liked).

However, note: This is not me talking out of my ass. I've played Warcraft 1, 2, 3, TFT, custom maps, WoW, BC, WotLK, etc...

And also, they're all terrible games and you should go play age of empires 2 instead. I refuse to comment on the games themselves or how I feel towards WoW or PvP in WoW, or PvE in WoW, or leveling in WoW, or class balance, etc.
