Sorry to say, but peace is impossible, and if possible will be a fleeting thing quickly forgotten as the next megalomaniac rises.

It is human nature to want power, and people cannot accept peace, as it is not human nature :p

I myself would want peace, but it sadly will never happen

No. as long as human beings have free will, they will strive to be better, and this will result in conflict. We define our own self-worth through conflict. How many times did you and your friends compare grades? How many of you play sports/games? Almost every meaningful human experience, as well as most forms of entertainment, origninate in conflict. If you remove the conflict, you remove what it means to be human, you remove what it means to be a sentient being.

Well we must. If we ever want to think about leaving our planet, unification as a specie is mandatory.
Unification doesn't mean complete peace. Our race only has meaning through conflict, peace and contentment cannot be the only things in our lives. To do so is a stagnant, rotting existance, not the life of a sentient creature.

No.
Freedom makes it so that people can harm each other,so it's either freedom or peace.
Limit people's actions to only doing good and you have peace, yet no freedom.
Give people a certain amount of choice to do things, and they'll eventually anger someone, somewhere.

That's actually rather depressing.
Limithing people's actions to only doing good isn't peace, because you can't control thier thoughts. Also, what is "good" for one is often "bad" for another.

Even if it ever does happen, some asshole will most certainly fuck it up.
Remember that Simpsons episode, where Lisa wished for world peace, and because of that, aliens were able to take over the world with nothing more than a club and a slingshot?
That's the kind of thing I mean.

New to the escapist forums. I thought I might post this question.

Will humanity ever reach a moment where everyone is completely content with each other, no wars, no racism, no sexism etc. I pray that we have world peace soon but I'm not too sure. Should I just give up on even entertaining the idea or what?
Well, spelling mistake that bugged the hell out of my OCD aside, this is a difficult question. An answer really depends on a persons interpetation of what peace consists of, and what a realistic level we as a species may be able to reach.

Mankind is selfish. Mankind has always been and will always be selfish. It is not a flaw that we can, or even should correct. It is our greatest instinctual asset, our best tool, and our greatest drive in every sense, just as it is our greatest weakness an barrier. It is our identity.

We are all driven to some degree to fulfill our own desires. Some are purely self serving and ambition-feeding. Others fulfill their need to fulfill the needs of others to improve upon them selves. While our what we are motivated to do may change though, what is motivating us will always be the same.

I believe that, some day, on an over all level, it is possible for humanity to achieve peace amongst eachother. It is almost certainly our ultimate destiny to be united by what is most common among us.

However, individuals will still disagree, bicker, resist, steal, indulge, fight, etc., because that is who we are. We may be able to solve our differences as a species, we are all individuals, we are all different, with different rationals and means of self fulfillment.

There will always be a crimerate in paradise, but I doubt it would be to high.

Ofcourse, if there isn't free will to ALLOW the possibility of crime, it isn't really paradise, is it?

It's the nature not just of humans but of all living beings to want more. We are always coverting others, always driven by greed. Even a wolf within a pack will want more from a kill or to be the alpha male. Humans are no different except we have something more, we can be driven by hate, revenge. Humans are more complex than the animal who can covet but that doesn't mean we're better.

I can't say 100% for sure either way. On the path we are right now, it isn't likely, but who is to say that we'll always be like this? The more important question is, at present birth and mortality rates, and assuming that the discrepency of material distribution is entirely solved (which is kind of a pre-requisite to world peace, at least in my books), would the Earth be able to sustain world peace?

No, war is too profitable to get rid of. Governments take out loans from a bank to buy weapons from arms dealers. Bankers get fat paid due to interest, and their weapons making sub companies get the loaned money right back meaning the loaned amount doubles since the government has to pay back the banks.

MGS4's world is quite accurate to what may happen to ours. PMC's fight against other PMC's all to keep constant battles going to keep the cashflow flowing.

Only way to have world peace is to make war unprofitable for anyone.

I guess as long as someone has a bigger stick (intellentual property, weapons, personal abilities, status, money etc), we will always have conflict which is born from envy. Envy being a human emotion, is unable to be wiped from humanity. Therefore peace with people elevated above other people isn't possible.

Its not world peace, no. But its probably the closest we've gotten to it as humans. Ceaser wrecked the shit of anyone who even thought about inciting violence against anyone or anything. So everyone was terrified of inciting violence. Hence peace.
That wasnt even CLOSE to world peace. A global community? Just because they aren't fighting down the street from your house doesnt mean that there is world peace.

The romans were still fighting wars, during this so-called time of peace. Hence, it wasnt a peaceful time, IMO
