I'd recommend you get the audiobook instead. It has a feel of someone travelling around and interviewing people, as all the characters are voiced by different people with Max Brooks himself doing the interviewing. Plus Luke Skywalker is in it so that's a bonus.
Problem with the audiobook is it doesn't have half the material of the deadtree version... unless they've recently done an unabridged version.

Read up on Zombie Survival Guide first. Then when you've thoroughly supplied yourself with knowledge on how to survive read World War Z.

World War Z was really good, I'd definitely recommend it. It sets itself apart from a lot of other zombie stuff with some pretty unique ideas.

I haven't read the guide... as far as I can tell, it doesn't really seem as, I don't know, substantial as WWZ? Again, I haven't actually read it, but I'd go with WWZ if you can only pick one.

World War Z is a damn good book. I think if you get the Zombie Survival Guide first however, it helps you appreciate World War Z more, because you get this whole backstory of the zombies, and how they function. Still, if only one is an option, get World War Z, because overall it's an awesome book.

The important difference is that the guide IS A GUIDE, NOT A STORY

so keep that in mind, but I would still do guide first, then WWZ so you can appreciate it more having all of the background on the zombies (since they are both by the same author)

Honestly both are great books and I enjoyed them immensely so I say to read both. However you should take them with a grain of salt as the research done about weaponry and combat is weak at best.

OH. MY. GOD.

I am now officially referring to all paper books as "the dead-tree version"

Two words for you, sir:
Hell.
Yes.

It's a great read, especially given the angle Mr. Brooks takes. The stories felt very real to me, at the very least, and his characterizations were very compelling. It doesn't really matter which book you read first, they're both good, though the Survival Guide is a touch dry for my tastes.

Ahem.
You haven't gotten them?!?! AND YOU'RE ASKING US IF YOU WOULD LIKE THEM?!?!? GET OUT!

They are rather good books. Read the guide first, as then you'll be obsessive and get a few of the inside jokes in WWZ.

WWZ is great! The thing you should know about it though is it is not a novel, per se. It is more like a collection of (very) short stories about peoples experiences of the Zombie War. Nor is it particularly bloody. If you looking for a gore-fest, look else where.

What it is, is a very cleverly written book. It is written very realistically and you could belive that an outbreak could happen just by reading it. In fact, several times I was like "Did this actually happen and no one ever told me about it?!"
The book kind of involves the apocalypse......so I didn't really have that reaction, lol.

But seriously, the zombie survival guide left me wondering.

Anyway, as I said, it depends if you like zombies.
I like zombies and zombie themes,
Well, there you go. Go buy it then. You'll likely enjoy it. From what I heard Max Brooks is a very good writer when it comes to zombie related stuff. However, you may want to get the Zombie Survival Guide first. World War Z is meant to be a sequel to that I think.
I think he's now the official canon as far as the standard zombie's traits are concerned, from his zombie survival guide

I want to read World War Z. First of all, is it good? Second, should I read Zombie Survival Guide first or will I enjoy it just as much if I leave it for second? I'm thinking of reading it in reverse order - if the story is interesting enough, I'd have more interest in the Survival Guide which I've already read snippets of.
My band's song Solanum. About someone who is bitten by a zombie and rushes to find their lover before the virus takes hold.
*NSFW*
ps I'm on the drums!
Huh....normally a person doesn't make a fan song based on a book until they've READ THE BOOK! lol

Our singer read the Survival Guide years ago, we've been playing that song since before World War Z was ever published.

Most likely. I just know that Max Brooks is highly praised since I used to go to a zombie club (complete with large discussions of how to survive a zombie out-break). It's just not my fancy.

Yes, I certainly would recommend it. World War Z was a book that I could not for the life of me put down and I loved every second of it. It's a damn good read and it makes zombies feel very real once more.

He pretty much takes most of it from Romero and expands on it except Brooks gives a cause.
