"be their friends"? wow, the people they interviewed must have been very, very, VERY lonely. but then again, it's people who by sex dolls instead of hookers, what can you really suspect...

While I personally think it's rather sad, I think people who say they should go see a hooker instead are either missing the point or downright disgusting. Prostitution is evil. Not the act really, selling sex for money, I don't have a problem with that, my problem is something like 90% of people involved in prostitution aren't involved willingly, they are either slaves (and that's what it is) being forced into it either by debt (smuggled into another nation by human traffickers and forced to "work off" their "debt") or be outright kidnapping (some countries), and the ones that are left are forced there either by addiction (drug addicts) or circumstances (doesn't want to starve, etc)...

Very few people involved in prostitution are there of their own free will, and those that are generally don't work the streets but rather high classed brothels with protection.

So yea... the doll is creepy, but personally I see it as the far lesser of two evils when you compare it to prostitution.

That thing is definitively not "the world's first sex robot".

It's not a robot for all the same reasons that Teddy Ruxbin is not a goddamn robot.

If you do want to call it a robot, it's not the first because other people have done this chatbot + RealDoll thing before. Man, I read an article two years ago about a guy who basically made his own crappy homemade version of the same thing and had been living with it for years.

No, this is just plain reality.

Yeah, but you have to program her, therefore it helps with the programming of "real" NPCs

Take it from someone who's done some reading in the AI field: there's pretty much nothing innovative going on here. I watched the demo video and it reminds me of this one paper I read back in college, which was about this rather trivial pattern-finding thing but tried to brand it as an amazing feat of computational linguistics by having two Aibos in little bandanas sit in a playpen and chirp at each other meaninglessly.

Based on the way Roxxxy talks in the videos, it looks to be using preselected phrases that are mapped to combination of the "robot's" limited sensor input (just some pressure sensors strategically positioned on various spots of the doll) and probably some state memory, which are customized via "templates".

If you want to see an NPC that specifically uses machine learning to develop its own "personality", even a crummy ten-year-old chatterbot is going to do better.

If you're willing to accept scripted interaction as "AI", Galatea [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galatea_%28video_game%29], which is also ten years old by now, totally blows all this stuff out of the water.
