Also while I am on the topic, Halo fans are only ever aggressive defenders of their franchise when people walk up to them and shout:
"Halo sucks! And because you play it you are a retard."
This makes them really angry because they were INSULTED. People don't like being insulted!
Try saying:
"Halo is just not my thing although I respect that you like it."
Nice level headed and nothing to object to, they leave you alone after that. Trust me.
The essence of fanboyism is not just loving something, or hating something else, it's being unable to accept that other people might hold differing opinions, and judging people to be morons simply because they don't share yours.
I understand that, I can clearly see why Half Life 2 for instance is so popular, I can see how it would be fun for the kind of person who is into that sort of thing, I just don't think that person is me. I don't really see how Halo is this sort of 'loathesome vile monstrosity' of gaming, I played it and found it to be both fun and engaging but I acknowledge that that's because I am more THAT kind of person who would contently play Halo. I don't discriminate people who like Half Life 2 over Halo an that's something I want to make very, very clear for the sake of distinguishing myself from the standard fanboy. I understand their opinions and I don't judge, I can respect that people like other games besides Halo, I do myself by the way. If a person simply says they do not like Halo in a calm disspassionate and imformal way, i respect that even though I disagree. Similar to my view on Half Life 2, I might not like it that much but many people do so I respect that.

However.... I think I am well within my right to respond negativley to people who spam the threads with Halo hate posts and insult people who like Halo. People who say negative things for the sake of insulting people based solely on the grounds of them liking a specific game, you know... the trolls.
Don't think I limit this to Halo, I would say the same about any spammer of say... Metal Gear Solid who makes threads about how shit MGS is, because doing things like this is just offensive and immature to such a level that is simply not acceptable. Nor is insulting someone who is trying to make an honest statement (like Cheesesandwichcake who has been doing this sort of thing for a while now and I am not going to even dignify his flaming with response).

Though it is true, I understand fanboyism as a definition... and I aspire not be grouped in the same class. Thanks for that, a nice definition and I mean that sincerly.

I keep TRYING to stop and they keep pulling me back in.

I vote Half Life fanboys, specifically the ones who operate under the belief that because they play Half Life they are automatically better than everyone else. These guys are the ones who spam threads about Halo and say how much it sucks just to annoy people then swamp the forums with Halo hate threads. They hypocritically mock the Halo Fanboys for obsessing over a game while they themselves obsess about another game calling it the greatest THING ever and then ad onto it by spending their entire time mocking Halo and those who play it. These guys are JACKASSES who think they are special because they hate something.

Also while I am here, Halo's fanbase IS NOT THAT BAD. I went online and played fourteen straight matches, of the fourteen matches sixteen players for each so fourteen by sixteen equals roughly so roughly 224 players.... I found ONE annoying little kid. ONE, only ONE. He was all alone, of 224 people he was the ONLY ONE, the ONLY annoying kid.
Yet we see messages that the Halo fanbase is full of annoying little retards.... why? I think that stereotype is really unjust and honestly is more a stereotype of online gamers that Halo unfortunatley caught the blame for.

Also while I am on the topic, Halo fans are only ever aggressive defenders of their franchise when people walk up to them and shout:
"Halo sucks! And because you play it you are a retard."
This makes them really angry because they were INSULTED. People don't like being insulted!

Okay done, need a break.
Ditto, throughout the entire thing.
I went an all night play session when Halo 3 was in its prime and didn't get one annoying kid that they talk about. The only real time i got a kid who was like this was thick. I bet he just rage quit halo cause he died more times than his entire team every game.
But back to the point, every game has those whiny little ones. Its just that its only brought up by the people who oppose the game as they find it a 'valid' excuse to say the game is crap.

In fact, i think, if psychology is correct, that the little whiny ones will call halo a game for 'retards and little girls' (wait a second..) and that something like Call of duty or Gears is a mans games which they will play more because of the grittiness and excessive gore that that age group are just destined to love.

In fact, since Halo fans are not complaining that the game looks appealing to the eyes (euphemism for it's vibrant and colourful) or the fact that its contained (euphemism for the fact that it's got little blood, guts and swearing) makes them seem a bit more mature. (Note- i said a bit, that can be wavered as soon as little ones or people like minded come into play, but they don't count.)
Okay, that's my round, i think ill go rest.

Sorry, I think I might have inadvertently given the impression that I was criticising you. I wasn't at all. I quoted you because you fairly well summed up the fanboy mindset. What I was trying to say is that the real problem with fanboys is that they jump from judging the product to judging the person. Even if I thought Halo was bad, I wouldn't assume that someone who liked it had to be a pillock, but that's how fanboys think. Feel free to hate the people that think like that.

For the record, I am ambivalent about both the Halo and Half-Life franchises, and I'm perfectly down with people disliking or liking either as long as they're sensible about it. You, from what I've seen of you, are a decent level-headed poster, although I don't know Cheesesandwichcake.
It's cool, no harm no foul.

Fan-haters are worst of all.
Now granted, fan-haters are generally fanboys of an opposing side of a debate, but occasionally someone can be a fan hater for no other reason than they are ignorant and want everyone else to revel in ignorance with them.

The best example I have (as it is one I have to deal with) are Nintendo fan-haters. I am a Nintendo fan, I never grew up with it, my first Nintendo console was the Wii, but I love it. The Wii is the console for me, but that doesn't mean I feel the other consoles are inferior, they're just not for me.
Then comes a fan-hater, with classic lines such as: "its for kids", "it has no good games", "its a gimmick" and in more extreme cases "you'd have to be stupid to own a Wii". They simply can't accept that there are people who would rather play Zelda than Call of Duty or whatever other "mature" game they deem more appropriate.

Its not limited to Nintendo of course. We've no doubt all heard the following at some stage.
- PS3/Xbox has no good games.
- PS3 is a glorified Blu-Ray player.
- Halo fans are all stupid minors.
- etc.

Basically it seems that everything that is potentially popular becomes the target of fan-haters, the worst part being, when you (as a fan) counter an argument, suddenly you get labeled a fanboy.

Lol, read his post, read what I said. Then I'll be able to crawl back under my bridge. If you can't tell I was being a sarcastic douche in that post...
And besides that, almost every fanboy of Halo I know IS ACTUALLY AN IDIOT.

Operative word : almost.
I have no doubts you're an intelligent person, Vrex, Hell they way you type and the things you say prove you aren't like everyone else who rallies behind that piece of sh- ok. I wont say it.

I saw the poll and basically scrolled down the options going "Ooooh" for each one, as almost each option presented a truly annoying and frustrating demographic. Ultimately however, I voted for "Other" because no one ticks me off quite like PC fanboys.

Fanboyism in other games and platforms is all well and good and honestly the fanboy crap we get from Halo fanboys and Xbox360/PS3 fanboys etc etc is all pretty standard faire when it comes up but a PC fanboy will come out of nowhere on a thread totally unrelated and go off on how awesome a keyboard and mouse are for every kind of game there is. Not only do they come off as elitist pricks (which other kinds of fanboys do too) they have trouble even staying relevant! When it is relevant to discussion they still seem more snobbish and pig-headed then other fanboys I see, possibly because of just how vehemently they insist everyone else is a complete idiot and aren't really gamers because they don't use a mouse.

Very true, and I regret not included PC in the poll.

Halo. Majority are kids with high voices and mics. Bad combo.
You blame Halo for that, but I blame online gaming in general. They are in every game I play, COD, Halo, Gears, everything else.....

They are everywhere regardless of what game you play. They are even on the internet. Those immature brats you speak of, are not technically Halo fan boys. You think anyone who plays a game automatically makes them a fanboy?

I was just playing Gears recently and one little kid couldn't stop yelling. Actually, play Halo 3 recently, I have hardly ever played with whiny little kids. Should I mention the "chocolate milk kid" was playing Rainbow Six?

Edit:

You know what I've changed my mind. ALL FANBOYS SUCK. No matter what game, no matter what system. THEY ALL SUCK. They all don't think logically and they ll never accept anything beyond the cult that they think they have: xbox360 and PS3 fanboys alike.

No logic can be used against a fanboy.

the iCult can be unnerving, but I have to vote Warhammer 40k fanboys. This is for the sole reason that they have an in-game model for fanaticism (FOR THE EMPEROR / PURGE THE HERETICS / etc) that they can emulate, and it gets wearisome.

Warhammer Fantasy fans, on the other hand, are pretty chill.
Where do you live, I want to kill your for posting that.

40k's storyline basically fucks over most others and Dawn of War is one of the best RTSes I've played in ages.
I loved Dawn of War. Doesn't mean I don't think 40k is stupid in general :p

And thank you for kinda proving my point there.

(And for the record, threatening staff in general is noooot the best idea, even if it's tongue-in-cheek)

I'm not sure if I've posted here before, but I'm just going to go with "All."

No fanboy is inherently more annoying than any other. They all need to shut the fuck up, myself included (<3 PC).
Anyone who can admit they are a fanboy, is a much better person than those who don't.
