I recently considered buying Mass Effect of steam. I've tried games such as Oblivion and I couldn't stand the slowness of it, Fallout 3 barely kept me going. I love to play fast paced FPS titles, so I want to know. Would I enjoy it? Or does it have to many RPG elements to bore me to tears?

I've played all three games on separate occasions, and I can easily say that while I didn't finish Oblivion or Fallout 3 (yet), Mass Effect is far and away the easiest one to get into and enjoy. It's not like the others, I think you'll like it.

I didn't vote as I'm honestly not sure. I would rent if first and if you enjoy it, buy it. That's what I did.

EDIT: Didn't see that you said off of steam. Judging by the comments you've made since the original post, I'd say you'd probably enjoy it

Mass effect has some pretty quick combat (Not COD4 quick, but quick), but it also has copious amounts of dialogue. All of it recorded, so you don't have to really 'read' if you're lazy, but there is plenty there.

Other then that, if that bothers you, then Mass Effect is an excellent game. I'm greatly looking forward to the 2nd.

Ask yourself this: Did you enjoy KOTOR (especially 2)?

It is pretty fast paced and it's lacking the depth of traditional RPGs, so I guess you'd like it

in comparison with oblivion or fallout 3, mass effect is much more linear, and story driven. this also means that it is gone through faster than other rpgs. the main storyline can be completed in some 4-6 hours in a continuous session. if you choose to do the additional side tracking stuff, it gets considerably longer and slower. luckily, you can skip all that.

Mass Effect is more fast-paced than Oblivion and Fallout 3, but still has a good amount of "standing around and talking", although it proceeds smoothly enough that it's not bad, and a good bit is even optional. Keep picking the option on the right and you'll burn through conversations pretty quickly. And when I say "proceeds smoothly", I mean that polite/good, neutral, and aggressive/evil options are always in the same place, and you can choose your response a few seconds before the other person is done talking, so the conversation isn't broken up much at all.

My advice...try it out. It's certainly cheap enough now.

From how you're describing yourself, I really don't think you will like Mass Effect too much. The combat is about one half "third person tactical shooter", one half RPG. Someone who is used to fast paced FPS games would probably find the combat unbearably slow in comparison.

By the way, I love Mass Effect. I'm just not sure if you will.

I just picked it up via Steam and am going through the inevitable and seemingly insurmountable task of making it run (Yep, I've got Vista). I'm looking forward to getting it working especially after reading these comments.

I think so. Besides pace, what are you looking for?
Having to think to complete an objective.
Seems kind of contradictory, having fast paced combat while also thinking. I guess if any game's got it, it's Mass Effect.

Well who said you don't think while play games such as CSS? I mean its not Doom at any rate you have to use strategy.

I don't mind reading or watching cutscenes as long as it's involved with the plot and entertaining (I.E Jak 2&3)

Biggest problem I have with Mass Effect (and I really enjoy the game, don't get me wrong) is that it is very talky. And it can get super-clunky if you micro manage your teammates' skills and weapon options (but the game does a pretty good job of automating that).

The pace is pretty inconsistent. The stuff on the Citadel is slow as molasses, but as soon as you get to the planets things heat up in a hurry.

It melds the RPG and FPS elements just as well as KotOR did, and there's no denying that it looks gorgeous.

Plus, if you play your cards right you get the (softcore) lesbian sex scene, so that's a point in its favour. :p

Well I tried to play Mass Effect. First I had to dl all the upgrades to even get it to start, then I had to roll back my drivers to a earlier version because the stupid fucking game would not work with the new batch of nvidia drivers, then when I finally got it working when I talked to the first commander every time it froze and I had to hard reboot my system.
Mass Effect and Bioware can go fuck themselves.
How dare you.
It's obvious you are at fault here, Mass Effect has no minuses to go along with it's plus points.

to OP: you will like Mass Effect, don't worry about it.

Its pretty fast paced. A fair bit of chatter but thats skipable (though i dont skip it.)
The RPG elements aren't big enough to slow down the game, the elevator sequences on the other hand are.
