A new drug has been created. This drug superpowers the brain, giving the user immense intelligence. Just one pill more than doubles your brainpower, giving the intelligence of a super genius, and even will drastically improve social charisma. the increased brain power even allows the brain more control of the body and muscles, so you become quicker, stronger, and more agile. Just one pill, and the effects will last for a week.

However, this all comes at a price. This drug puts a terrible strain on the body. With each pill that you take, the drug causes irreversibly damage, aging your body anywhere from 6 months to up to 4 years with each pill.

So, my question; if such a drug were invented, a drug that gave you intelligence beyond your dreams, even improving charisma and athletic ability, for one whole week with just a pill, would you take it, even if it would age you anywhere from half a year to up to 4 years? how many times would you take it? after you start taking it, do you think you could stop?

Also, the drug only ages the body, it does not develop it. So if your body is still developing, the pill won't make you develop faster. it will just awkwardly age your young body

EDIT: also, a new question; if you are one of the people who only plan to take the pill if a situation calls for it, what would you consider a suitable situation? what kind of situation would be enough to sacrifice up to 4 years

Editedit: and no, i haven't seen Limitless, tho it was probably the commercials that put this idea in my head

Is there one that does the opposite?

That makes you incredibly weak and stupid but also makes you live longer?

One week I'd be mega me, then overdose on the other ones and just be a vegetable for a week.
The imbalance would increase my lifespan while not wasting the time being unhappy. Vegetables have no feelings!

Use it one time and use you new immense intelligence to fix it so you dont age
irreversible damage. lets say for the sake of argument that it is highly doubtful you would ever be able to fix the damage. if you took the drug regularly for the entire year, there's a chance you might succeed, but it is much much more likely you would fail and die

This is the kind of problem Odysseus faced in the Odyssey. In the end he chose the shorter, glorious life over a long, bland one.

I could only really imagine it ending in something similar to an arms race, with people taking it constantly and basically forcing everyone else by necessity to do so as well.

I also reckon the withdrawal symptoms from something like that would be enormous, after feeling the best you ever have in your life to being your regular self would feel like quite a drop, basically making it the most addictive drug ever. I probably wouldn't take it, just for that reason.

At that rate you would also lose 97% of your lifetime at the absolute minimum, assuming you take one every week.

I would obtain the drug, but only save it for moments where it might save the life of myself and others around me.

I am content the way I am, and would rather be around longer to experience more, than to be more intelligent and only live a short life.

Sounds like you have recently watched Limitless with Bradley Cooper.
I personally wouldn't take it.

I'll take it and here's why: my entire reason for taking it is to figure out a way around the drawbacks.

I'd like to say I wouldn't take it all the time, only when I want to go be a superhero or something. But let's face it, I am pretty self-destructive. I would get addicted to them and be dead by the end of the year.

It'd be a hell of a year, though. I never wanted to live very long anyway.

Yeah, I think I'd take it. Just once at first, during that first time I'd figure out a plan to accomplish my goals, set it into motion, and decide upon a maximum number of times that I can use the drug (since I'll be smarter then, that'll be a better time to accurately gauge how many times I should use it). I'd use the rest of it accomplishing what I could. After that I'd take it the planned number of times and see where it got me.

id keep it for emergencies but i would use 2 pills one of which id use to learn several languages and the other pill to basically speed learn everything id need to learn for a phd in chemistry and biology that way when i take the classes they will all be a walk in the park and not a major strain on my procrastination life style

edit: as for an emergency that i might use it for id guess id use it for something that might threaten my life style in a profound way

I don't take any drugs now; my fiancee complains constantly that I won't even take an advil for a headache. I know that I have an addictive personality, and I know that if I take a super-pill out of curiosity I may not be able to stop, so I'd rather just avoid it altogether.

So I see you watched "Limitless"? But
hell yes I would take that shit :p.
Thought the same thing too.

And yes, i'd also take it.
If i see myself improving and my life improving, i'd get immediately addicted to it.

Maybe take a break once in a while when i just don't feel the need to be awesome for a few days, but other than that, i'd rather live a short life being the best that i could be rather than a longer one thats probably mostly mediocre and boring...

*sigh*
