Well this has certainly happened to me, but only half of it is true (no pairing involved) and it's not an RPG.

Witcher 1 is the example here. Let's say you don't know nothing about the backstory of the game (didn't read books). In chapter one you meet Shani that becomes a love interest throughout the game. Then in Chapter 2 Triss pop's up and confuses the hell out of me because I have no idea which to choose so I go with Triss because apparently it's "canon" (I read up on it) so I decided to stick to that. It was rather awkward to be perfectly honest.

Not really answers the vote, but I thought I would share it where you are on a path with someone then someone else gets thrown into the mix and "forced" onto you so to speak.

It depends on the context and presentation. There's no saying that the audience doesn't like the 2nd person just as much, more, or maybe the story is designed for that ending. :x

As long as you make it clear that kind of choice is the characters call not the players then it's all cool.
Obviously some people will get pissy because it's not the Disney prince/princess principle or it hits too close to home but that is just how creation works, you can't make everyone happy and if you try the work will suffer for it.
