How about adding some kind of birth control into a yearly or even monthly injection? People can have all the fun they want without fear of some 'accident' that ends up with fines, jail time, or whatever punishments for having too many kids. If a couple wants a kid for real, they can spend some time doing foster care to see if they really want to go through with it and if they're still set on it they can go through whatever legal process for papers letting them skip their birth control injections. If the couple can't have their own child for some reason, they can adopt, go to a sperm bank, or stay as foster parents.

How the birth control is enforced would be anyone's guess.

Well, I would make it so that famlies without children recieve minor money assistance. With one child Normal assistance, 2 less assistance, and 3+ no assistance. So 1 Children families would be favourite, causing the population to decrease

Thank you for an excellent example of why I hate environmentalists. Population control IS a euphamism for genocide, it always has been and always will be. Just like "controlling the pet population" is a euphamism for ripping your dog's balls off and having the "humane" murder patrols killing any strays. Do you really even want to consider population control? Why can't we just let the chips fall where they may rather than let the government go on a murderous rampage.
I would add a bit to that if I may

It's always been a surprise to me the level which people want a government to control them, if I said that I believed that the government should legislate to prevent homosexual behaviour, I do have to wonder if 70% of about 170 poeple here would agree with me that this is the kind of thing governments should be getting up to.

It's a strange almost religion of our times that everything is the responsibility of government, I have found plenty of my fellow British citizens voicing the claim that it was the Governemts duty to solve and even the cause of their massivly overweight (and overfed in many cases) children.

no way I am letting a government have that kind of power. Fuck that, I'm sure we will have a war or something.

id say find another inhabitable planet, make friends with the natives and ask them if we can have some land for the overcrowding....and also DO THIS CONSTANTLY... You do realise leaving caps lock on will make less people read your post ,not more. Also I think finding a planet that we can live on is a bit harder than you seem to think.

Your graph is misleading implying growth at a constant rate. Since recent times the growth has begun to stabilise.

In addition it leads to eugenics - look at china - the male:female ratio is FUBARed

Frankly, I think it's more important to limit the amount of people we have entering the country. Oh wait, we do but people complain that we should allow anyone in at anytime taking our jobs at a lower wage. Wonder why the economy is shit? Wonder where all the unemployment is coming from? Wonder why the population is drastically increasing?

History has shown that this is always a bad idea and usually leads to parents killing a child who isn't the preferred sex. This might be seen to be a non issue in western society but my sister got preganant although she was using protection (she is married and already had a kid.) What would you want to do with that child? Keep in mind that's shes now a gorgeous little girl.

You can encourage safe sex and education but putting a restriction on family growth always leads to suffering one way or another.

On the note of the 'Two child limit or be punished' that some of you have mentioned, I'm both a twin and a third child. Should I be punished because I was born nine minutes after my twin sister? Should my parents be punished?

First, try to increase production of food so the earth can sustain a larger population. Create renewable methods (Hoover dam provides 3 million people with power and clean water) of energy production to power countries national grids and cars (so countries with oil are not exploited or exploit people). Also, towns and cities will have to be expanded to accommodate more people living in them.

Yeah, its a very flawed plan.

I would not support my government defining my rights as to how many children I can have. I have two, and my wife and I are quite happy and content with that. However, if we so chose to have one or two more, that is our decision to make alone, not the government.

You'd be interested to know that population growth directly correlates to the status of the people in the country/region/etc.
Developing countries have insane population growth, but usually have famines, droughts, disease, etc.
Developed countries have slow to decreasing population growth, and everyone lives longer lives.

Would I support this law that gives the government the power to give you moneys for having only 2 kids? No.
Why? Because its silly, and doesn't really do anything.
People will have as many childrens as they want, and the only way to effectively prevent them from doing so, is to control the pregnancy or kill excess children.

We're still a long ways off from Earth's population cap, so I'm not worried.

The US will cause the worst case, no doubt about it.

So all I have to say is, after they invade Australia as we are the largest exporter of beef... come at me brew.

I reckon rationing could work, we eat way too much than our bodies need as it is anyway, if we ration down the food to essentials like Britain brilliantly did in WW2 then we could save food for future generations.

If you have a "kid you want", I would be tempted to call you a horrible person. I can understand it in countries like China where the male fends for the family, and you need a male to take care of you when you're older, but I think this attitude needs to be combated.
This is pretty much what I mean. I personally find the attitude repulsive, but there are people out there that see children as an investment, and will want to 'get it right' or cut their losses. If this law were to occur, I'd guess these kinds of people would start to feel their attitude is justified.

im for restriction of children, except here in australia where we apparently still need more.
