The idea is that if you didn't amputate the limb, your death is certain. However, even if you did, your survival is not guaranteed

Feel free to write about any situation that you want to that you would/wouldn't do it in, but i have made two scenarios regardless:

1: The 127 hours scenario: Your limb is pinned by a unmovable object and you have no way to call for help. You are in a isolated area, and although people do occasionally visit it, No one will find you before you die of dehydration if you remain pinned by the rock. You must perform the amputation yourself, with your only tool being a penknife. If you did cut off the arm, Then you would have to find help before you die from blood loss. apart from the knife, all you have are the clothes on your back

2: You have been bitten by a zombie. You have no painkillers, and your only tool is a bone saw. Your friend has volunteered to do the amputation for you. The bite is still fresh, so it could work.

And then I would get an arm made of steel and beat the crap out of whatever cost me the arm in the first place.

1: I honestly don't think O could do it. By the second day, I'd probably just cut my own throat. Better I go that way than dehydration, and I don't think I have the balls to cut my own arm with a penknife.

2: However, though I will demand all the alcohol we have to dull the pain somewhat, I would go this I think. A bonesaw is eminently suited for this kind of thing, so yeah. Then I get a chainsaw attached.

This is something I actually worry about. I like to hike, and I often go out alone due to scheduling issues with friends. So three or four times a year, I end up on mountains by myself. I carefully avoid the trail edges, but I still worry about the possibility of slipping, breaking my leg, and having no way to letting anyone know where I am. And no, I probably couldn't cut my own arm or leg off. I'd probably die of dehydration or get eaten by a bear/mountain lion/whatever first.

I love life. If I thought I could save myself, I'd bear any pain as opposed to dying. You can get a new limb- you can't get a new life.

Limbs tend to contain large blood vessels. Amputating one in the middle of nowhere will result in me bleeding to death within minutes most likely. Specially since I'd be likely to pass out from the shock so I couldn't do any self-first-aid and all.

Exactly, even if you could cauterize the wound before you bled out, the pain could send you into shock and you'd die anyway. If I had a friend that could make sure I wouldn't bleed out, then they could just go looking for help and I can save my limb.

1) nope . Not doing it . Without an arm i can no longer play games. Withot games my life has no meaning . Plus i make fun of my friends dad for having one arm. The irony of me losing mine is too much to bear .

2)Nope . I'm asking my friend to kill me . No way am i cutting off my limb and no way am i turning into a zombie .

Also : i'm weak . I couldn't live as an amputee . I have the utmost respect for diabled people , because i couldn't do it.

Yeah, probably. I like living too much to let an arm get in the way, and if circumstances were that dire and actually happening to me in real life, I would probably have gone through enough shit to make an amputation seem like not a big deal.

Also, here's the arm amputation scene from 127 Hours, just so you know what that would be like.

I have no idea, I guess if I was desperate enough I'd do it. Still don't like the idea of cutting of a limb but if that's what it takes to survive then I guess I could. Also this video is strangely relevant.

If I have to do it myself, no way in hell. I'm not a doctor nor do I have enough medical training to even attempt a procedure like that. In all likelihood I would fuck it up, cut an artery and bleed to death in 2 minutes. No point in causing myself extra pain, considering the fact that if I was the one doing the procedure my death would be pretty much assured anyway.

Logically it makes sense to do it, but actually, no I wouldn't be able to. Not with being knocked out

While I would say yes as I value my life but when it come to doing it for real I wouldn't be too sure about myself.

Given exactly that choice, yes

However, there are few situations in which near certain death by blood loss is more hopeful than waiting for help.

I really wouldn't be capable of cutting off my own leg... I'd rather wait for someone to find me than to take a gamble to cut off my limb to be out of it sooner. Even if someone else had to do it to me I would love to be unconcious when that happens, I don't know my brain just keeps telling me that cutting off own limbs is unacceptable.

Realistically, I wouldn't do it. I'd either seek to end my misery as quickly as possible or become ultra-religious and confess every sin I've ever made right down to the most minute detail. In the second situation, I may seek to do as much good as I can before telling someone to end it all.

Of course I would. It is possible to live a full life without legs or arms. Plus, me being an optimist, I believe that sometime in my lifetime robotics will reach the point to sufficiently replace my limbs. In fact, today I know of a few examples of people without arms able to feed themselves with robotic arms.

Situation 2 wouldn't be helped by amputation.

The answer is pretty much no.
I'm a wimp.
I'd tug on it for 10 minutes or so and then just kill my self in a 127 hours situation.

And in a zombie situation, I would just... be a zombie
it'd be sweet, You get to shamble around, bite people. I mean, if you did that now you'd be arrested.

Wow, you have issues. Making fun of someone who is dealing with a situation that you say you would rather die than be in is just low.

I feel the same as you in regards to rather dying than live with physical impairment, which is why I have so much respect for those that do live with it, like the disabled or elderly. Sort of contradicted yourself in regards to respecting them, didn't you?

Get some morals.

i probably couldn't cut off my arm or leg because i am too squeamish BUT if i had a friend with me who would be willing and able to do it sure, if i can't live without said limb i may reevaluate my option but i also believe that in my lifetime there will be prosthetic limbs that function as good as natural ones(at least until the crazy billionaire turns me into a mindless killbot)
