Wow, you have issues. Making fun of someone who is dealing with a situation that you say you would rather die than be in is just low.

I feel the same as you in regards to rather dying than live with physical impairment, which is why I have so much respect for those that do live with it, like the disabled or elderly. Sort of contradicted yourself in regards to respecting them, didn't you?

Get some morals.
Moral? Pfft ! A mechanic for people to feel better about themselves . Plus i only make fun of that one armless person not all of them . And since he's the dad of my best friend he's fair game . Actually the way he lost it is pretty tragic . He saved his son from getting hit by a car and lost his arm . I think he regrets it now lol .

In the second case certainly, but in the first I'd probably just kill myself with it. Getting through bone with a penknife sounds unnecessarily painful and fruitless.

.....Stop putting spaces in between all of your periods.

Anyway, if I know for a fact that the only way to have any chance of living is to take off a limb, then yeah: I'd do it. I don't really see it as a choice. I mean, that limb isn't going to do much good if you're dead anyway, will it?

1. Yes I probably would, or rather I would want to sacrifice a limb in order to survive, but unless I was in the actual situation I can't really give a qualified guess as to whether I'd be able to go through with it or not, I'd likely attempt to do it, and if I couldn't I'd attempt suicide, I prefer spending a few agonizing minutes by my own hands to whatever slow death I might encounter like that.

2. Depends, if they are people I really care about and want to give the best possible chance of survival I'd likely go for suicide so I wouldn't slow them down. Missing an arm would make me about as capable as a pack mule and would require lots of time to train myself in 1-handed everything, and a leg would be even worse, depending on how our situation was supplies/shelter/people/food wise I'd only want to live if I knew the group could support me without compromising the mobility/safety of the others.

If it was the 127 hour situation, I'd hold out for 24 hours then see how things look.

If it was zombies though, I'd hack the thing off ASAP.

Depends, if it's someone else's limb for my own survival, then yes.
If it's my own arm, it depends on what kind of replacement limbs are available.
If there's nothing good enough is available, I'd prefer death.
That said, transfering my mind into a computer is good enough too.
Has anyone seen the Deadly Neurotoxin??

EDIT: In the 127 hour scenario, it would also depend on whether or not my survival instinct forces me to do it or not.

Limbs tend on having lots (okay not lots but you know what I mean) of large and very bleedy blood vessels so I'd quickly die of blood loss or shock if I were to start hacking one off.

But since I'd most certainly die if I did nothing I'd take my chances and start cutting.

An emphatic yes to both. If I do nothing I will certainly die. If I cut/get it cut off then I have a very, very slim chance of surviving. And to me, a slim chance of survival is a lot better than dying.

1) nope . Not doing it . Without an arm i can no longer play games.
Certain Wii games can be played with only one hand. Also Minesweeper and Solitair don't take two arms.

I would only cut off my own arm as a last resort. I like my limbs and I'm rather attached to them.

Also, if I've been bitten by a zombie and people want to cut my arm off, then bollocks to that for several reasons.

1) The arm removal scene in Telltale Games The Walking Dead game had me watching the scene through my fingers and I wasn't the one it was happening to.

2) It doesn't work.

3) I'm not being a one armed zombie. Thats just cruel, how am I supposed to feast upon your delicious flesh if I am not able to grab you properly?

Civ 5 can be played with one hand too! And a lot of RTS's.

OT: Yeah probably, I wouldn't ever be in a scenario to just have those things though. Going hiking where it could become dangerous requires a serious blade for serious problems, like skinning food, or amputating limbs, or surprise wolves.

Same with zombies. I'm gonna stay inside, board up the building, wait 3 days for the zombies to be destroyed by the weather, then go looting.

I don't know if I'd have it in me to go through with it. I imagine it would be excruciatingly painful. I'd probably pass out from the pain and bleed out... or bleed out even if I happened to cut the arm off.

If I cut off a limb myself, I'll bleed out anyway. Might as well die without attempting to survive the amputation in the middle of nowhere. No help to be had anyway? I wouldn't survive it. Also that would be dying in more pain. Lesser of two evils I suppose.

For the second situation, I might consider amputation but certainly not if I was alone. I'd try to live as long as I could.

And then I would get an arm made of steel and beat the crap out of whatever cost me the arm in the first place.
You're avatar confused me for a second.

I'm gonna go with yes here, I'm more attached to life than I am to any of my body parts.
Yes, even that one.

1) Nope; since I have absolutely no fucking idea what I'm doing outside of a lifeguard class and that is just dealing with how to stop bleeding. There's also a chance that my limb could be pinned in such a way that even if I did amputate it, I would inevitably die from the bloodloss.

2) just put a bullet through my brain. I don't come back as a zombie, I don't have to deal with having my arm lopped off, and it saves time so the others can go off before the zombies find us.

Yes, yes I would. *knocks on wood* Well, if I entered a scenario where I was facing sure death and there was no chance of rescue, then I think I would. To be honest though, I hope I never end up in that situation where I'm forced to choose. I'm not a coward, I've just never been tested. I'd like to think that if I was, I would pass. I look at the tested and think "There but for the grace go I." Might be a coward, I'm afraid of what I might find out. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIGMUAMevH0]

Also, because I'd like to imagine that if I was in that scenario that I'd hear Samuel L. Jackson quoting the bible [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FlTj6fcSJ8] from on high:

1. I think I'd probably be able to wriggle myself out, even if i have to use my own blood as lubricant.

2. I'd have him hack that thing of ASAP. And then could re-purpose the arm as a weapon, and use it to beat the shit out of more zombies!!

Jog to work in the morning at twice your human-legs speed, & never have sore feet or sprain an ankle.

& how can you not look awesome with this thing? No more sore fingers from gaming & typing either.

Well theoretically I would if I could. I'd rather lose one limb than my entire body if you catch my drift.

But realistically unless the tool I was using could cut it off very quickly, or painlessly, I don't think I could handle the procedure. The pain, both physical and mental would be so unbearable I'd either give up or pass out.

Would I? Yes...

Could I is the real question, if you're doing it yourself. And I have no idea.

It depends on the situation, and I'll explain why.

{1} This scenario is already a death sentance. Cut off a limb with a pen knife? Out in the middle of nowhere? With my only hope of not dying to be an improvised staunch and no possibility of even a painful cauterization? Where the possibility of an infection might still claim me even if I manage to get free AND help? AT THIS HOUR??? I'm sorry, but if I had a machete, I'd TRY it, but my lucky blade would have my gushing for much longer than necessary because it can't be done quickly and cleanly. It's a grim prospect.

{2} This one's more reasonable. It can work and all I have to do is be in blinding pain, rather than have to be the one cutting AND screaming my fool head off. In that scenario, I have someone to drag me off if I pass out even.

To save my life? Sure. I bite the bullet on these occasions. However, I want a replacement. WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY!
