The question is simple.

If Yahtzee left The Escapist, would you still follow him or back him on Patreon?
With the formal ousting of Former God-In-Chief Jim Sterling and the informal booting of Geek-About-Town Moviebob, would you follow Callipygean Superman Yahtzee back to YouTube or wherever he went?

I've been watching the content of The Escapist slip, especially as the leaders have changed to something more 'Positive' (read: Apologetic, Corporate and Safe), and I've had a beef or two with the moderators on these forums. I'd personally like it if Yahtzee left and I never had to visit this damn website again, since he, Jim and Bob were the only people I followed.

Thankfully some of the forum trollers are decent people, which is why I'm here.

I wonder if Yahtzee's considering it.

But in Yahtzee's defense, I wouldn't back anyone on Patreon so it's not really a "Him" thing, it's a "Me" thing. Frankly, I would rather watch a 30 second ad I can ignore than to pay money to see...well....much of anything really.

Now I know exactly what you're thinking: "tippy2k2, you chiseled hunk of pure sex appeal, how can you possibly say that when you have a PubClub subscription? Is that not paying money?!? ANSWER ME YOU SEXY BEAST!!!!"

One could call that hypocritical of me but I get multiple benefits being in the PubClub (multiple videos w/o ads, the site w/o ads, forum stuff, etc) where Patreon is paying one person to make one thing that I may or may not enjoy. Honestly, I think Patreon is going to crash and burn myself but that's a different argument for a different thread...

I'm actually not a patreon guy myself. I can barely afford to back a Kickstarter every so often. (Backed Strafe today, game looks sick.) But some people clearly are and I'd like it if Yahtzee knew he had a chance in that big scary forest. He's the center product of The Escapist, he'd land on his feet if he's considering it.

But he knows that. I'd like to know what's stopping him, personally.

Same deal with tippy. I've never invested in any sort of crowdfunding for Patreon or anything like Kickstarter.

Mostly because you're not paying for guarantees, but tentative promises.

I dunno. Only if he did more. I mean I give Jim about $5 a month for his stuff, and he does podcasts, lets plays, squirty plays, and the Jimquisition.
I know Yahtzee does the occasional other YouTube vid with that one dude, but its only meh at best. Yahtzee would need to do a lot more to earn a Patreon, and I think he's too introverted for that.

Maybe?

If he were to do what Jim does, release videos for free while having a Patreon that gets you some extras then, well, I'd probably just do what I do with Jim's stuff, namely watch them while selfishly not paying a cent.

If he were to make it so the only way to watch ZP is by donating then... yeah, I guess I would. It'd be a pretty pitiful amount though. Maybe $15 per month.

No.

Not only because I can't afford it currently, but because I have no doubt that Yahtzee will have a pretty large following like Jim. If he doesn't I might consider it but I would sooner support the guys on RageSelect because contributors over there actually get a lot more content than what is offered for free. Plus over the last 2 or so years they've already proven themselves to be pretty productive so their word has more meaning.

I love Yahtzee, but I wouldn't back anybody on Patreon or any of those give-me-money-if-you-like-me systems.

Follow, sure. Pay? If Yahtzee wants money, put his reviews on a DVD and sell 'em wholesale. I'd buy.

Fact is, when the Escapist loses him, it's over around here.

No. I don't pay anyone who puts their stuff out there, unless I want a commission, in which case I have no problem paying. I just don't like the idea of Kickstarter or Patreon or whatnot.

I typically spend money for the work, not for liking the person who creates the work in the hopes they'll create more. And I doubt I'd ever pay for online reviews anyway.

So no.

No, although Yahtzee brought me to this site originally the novelty wore off after a couple of years, I still watch for vague amusement but I'd never pay for his content. Though, I have a high bar for paying for anything online, there's so much free content out there that it isn't worth paying for what I can find similar of elsewhere.

Nope, I don't do Patreon. Frankly, it's kinda undignified. Paying for a person, as opposed to for their work. The alienation from human relations has leveled up, it's all mediated by money now.

Also, have to hand it to you. Soliciting donations for a guy to leave the site on the site itself. Now that's chutzpah in the face of traditional manners.

Absolutely not.

If I'm going to be paying for something, I want it to have some actual substance to it.
Yahtzee's content is not like that. It's just a bunch of jokes strung together.

Not saying that there isn't a place for that sort of content on the internet, because there is. But it's not the sort of thing I'm going to be throwing money at.

I don't really like the idea of Patreon. Mostly because I wouldn't myself feel comfortable in using such a system where I get paid in advance for making content. I would consider doing a one-off donation though and obviously also disable adblock on any site he posts his videos on so that he gets ad revenue from me. I do want the people making things I like to be able to live of doing so. Or hell, be able to get by regardless.

I am not in a financial situation to back any one on Patreon, I still haven't backed STRAFE's kickstarter yet despite it being essentially my favorite type of gameplay (Gotta try and squeeze in a $15 pledge tonight).

Additionally, I think Yahtzee would do fine on patreon without my 1 dollar a month (which is probably the most I would give if I had money to give). I personally would back people who didn't make a lot of money and help them out first. I follow a lot of internet animators who are in dire need of financial support in the wake of Youtube's various changes. I personally love Yahtzee's work, but I feel Yahtzee would make plenty of money from Patreon without me.

Sadly the one way I would probably be suckered in to patreons is if they did that with-hold content to patrons only thing. Although I find that really shitty. Like if Jim ever went full on Cyril Sneer and started making Jimquisition only open to patrons I would consider giving him all the money, but I would be pissed and resentful. But Jim's a lovely boy and wouldn't do that to me.

Nope. I like Yahtzee but nope. Patreon/Kickstarter/Early Access isn't for me. I dislike Patreon in particular, but clearly a lot of people are ok with it, so I'm sure Yahtzee would be fine without my money.
