I was watching the movie Looper just recently and it got me thinking "could I do that?" I don't think its too spoilerish to the movie to explain the concept of a looper. Mobs from the future use time travel to send their enemies back in time to where you assassinate and dispose of the bodies. This means in the mobs time there is no evidence of a deceased body. The catch is that they will send your older self back in time for you to kill(Hooded, so you don't know its you. This is called closing the loop) Once you have killed your 'future self' you get a huge payout and have 30 years to enjoy before they come for you.

The question is would you do it? Aside from having a job that involves killing people would you rather live a great life for 30 years to know you WILL meet a violent end or would you rather live a normal life in what the movie portrays as a pretty derelict, run down world?

Personally, I couldn't do it. While the money might be good I'm a easily stressed person at the best of times and I would go crazy in the last year knowing that people are actively hunting me down to have me killed. Trying to beat fate would be futile.

First things first, you might want to go a little more in depth in your explanation of the movie. I had to read the plot on the wiki page like 3 times before I actually fully understood it. And your post has less explanation than that.

Second, while it sounds interesting, I don't think I could do it. I just couldn't kill a person, even if I was told they were "bad" (and it's the mob saying they're bad, so I wouldn't trust the mob anyway.)

Considering that half the shown world is in complete poverty, I would definitely do it

I'd do it. Then the moment I close my loop, I'd pop myself in the head, creating a temporal paradox that DESTROYS! REALITY! ITSELF!

Yeah, it doesn't work like that in the movie, but hey, I can dream can't I?

I forget the exact details from Looper on how they can track you down if and when you betray the mob, but if it were possible, I would get some lottery numbers, use the time machine, win the money under a false name and lay low at a beach resort somewhere.

No (I haven't seen the movie but I know the summary of it), sure it sound like easy money per say (depend how hard it is for me to cover the dead bodies without being caught) but I don't like the idea of my past self being the excutioner to my death.

Regardless of whether I would or wouldn't, the main thing to take from the poll is; I don. You fishfood.

OT: The plot of Looper makes no sense. If they wanted to use time travel to dispose of a person/body, which not get send the body back to the Jurassic period? So, it could be eaten by dinosaurs. Or, back to when the planet was just a volcanic wasteland. Or, before the planet coalesced?

But how can you be sure that the body you're sending back doesn't have some sort of disease which, while relatively harmless in present time, could potentially cause a deadly outbreak in prehistoric times, or something like that?

As for the topic:
If I were to think up a code word and a response to that, I would say the word before shooting the person. If he would know the response, it would be me and I could spare him.
I didn't get how can the mafia know whether you've closed the loop or not. I mean, I wouldn't tell anyone, collect the gold and be done with it.
After that, I would write down and memorize several lottery numbers.
Worst case scenario, in 30 years they would send me back, the younger me would spare me and I could go on to win those lotteries, change my name, get a plastic surgery etc. and live out the rest of my days in peace.
Unless of course the mafia has a sure way to determine whether the loop was closed or not but I don't remember anything like that in the movie.

Why not send your victims to the future? Then they'll only find the bodies after you're dead. I'd be afraid to be a Looper, in case I didn't properly dispose of a body, and got in trouble not only with the police, but with the future mob as well. They'd send someone back in time just to kill me, or something.

Something that popped up for me. Say you close your loop, get your gold, then blow it all on hookers and blow. Instead of wasting around for 29 years and 11 months, what happens if you check out early?

Apparently the time machine can only go back thirty years or something.

Though the time machine can clearly send you through space as well as time, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't just teleport you into the ocean.

If I just didn't have any postive future for myself, than probably yes. If I can still have a chance in the world, than I'd rather take the forward thinking option of not doing it.

While I agree with you, it's important to remember that Looper deals with time travel.

That in of itself, no matter which media it's used in, ALWAYS results in a senseless plot.

Yeah the whole premise is a little silly. I mean if everybody has vital sensors, and law enforcement is instantly notified of any unexplained death, wouldn't they also be able to detect when someone inexplicably drops off the map?

Yeah, sorry about that, I did write in full text in the poll options but it didn't display for some reason. Had a look at trying to edit it but no luck. I'm new to the site and it was the first time I've done a poll.

Swaim? Is that you? There are just so many variables that can mess up for you guys! Time travel is dangerous! We should just shoot them in the head and dissolve them in a barrel.

I actually only saw that movie for the first time last night. And I would absolutely do it.

I hate the idea of growing old, and if anyone's gonna kill me, its gonna be me. Does that count as suicide?
