I really could not care less about the celebrity tabloid scene; it's ridiculous and stupid that people complain about how bad these tabloids are while spending tons of money so that they can read the newest gossip. However, once in a while, inspiration for a thread pops up!

Confirming long-standing reports that the MTV reality show "The Hills" was largely scripted, Spencer Pratt and his wife and co-star, Heidi Montag, described production trickery in interviews Monday on their E! special, "After Shock: Heidi and Spencer."

...

Pratt, who had a reputation as being quick to anger, both on the show and in real life, said he is still heckled and even attacked by people on the street. This has made him reluctant to start a family. "I wouldn't want to be Spencer Pratt's kid," he said, concerned that his child would be a target for bullies. "I'd have a kid if there was no Google or YouTube."
INSPIRATION!

So I come to you, Escapist friends and lovers, to ask you a simple question:

Would you be hated for money?

These two have absolutely blown through their money so now they're kind of stuck in a situation where they're hated AND not rich but let's say that I offered you hundreds of millions of dollars to be on a reality TV show but the catch is that you are the villain.

You will be hated. People will see you and curse your name because of the actions you are shown to take on TV. You can try to explain to the people that it's not real but who's going to listen to you? No one because you are absolutely reviled. You are portrayed as a cheater, a liar, and an all around sleazy person. For a more recent example, you are Kim Kardashian (minus the people who do like her); a person that many just plain hate.

1. You will always be on this TV Show and it will permeate pop culture so much that people who do not watch TV will know who you are. If you grow tired of it and attempt to quit, you will lose your paycheck. You might still have some money left if you invested well but the hatred that you caused with this show will live longer than you do.

2. For those who absolutely need a number, it would be 500 Million Dollars (so enough to live very comfortably for life or very extravagantly if you're smart about it). You are required to do ten years, during which time you will become the hatred of every person on the planet. It will absolutely define your life as you have to do the regular celebrity stuff (7 days a week in the public eye; paparazzi, public appearances, etc.) so no hiding on tropical islands only to come back for filming. Your life will be this reality show for the next ten years and the infamy gained will follow you the rest of your life.

You will not be in any physical danger (or no less physical danger than any other celebrity) but the people will hate you.

EDIT: Put in some other "rules" to lock you in :D (1.)
EDIT 2: Put in some more edits to clarify other rules (2.)

Is it worth it?

For hundred's of millions? Sure, as long as I have a few friends and acquaintances who like me, the rest of the world can hate all they want, I honestly don't really care what they think. They can keep on hating and I can sit on my giant cruise ship in the tropics with a few cool people and chill out :-D

If I am hated by the majority of people for the rest of my life, then it better be enough money to let me live a relatively frivolous life to make up for only having a few people who still like me.

Otherwise, being hated isn't really worth it in my opinion. :(

JoJo got it.

If I can have some of my close friends still around, I can live with it. If I can buy whatever the hell I want the haters can go on hating.

The show would be boring as shit as all I do is read, play video games, and watch TV. Not much of a show.

Yeah.
During my life, I was hated many times FOR FREE so it's not anything I can't deal with.
Another thing is that these days, celebrity status disappears pretty quickly. A year or 2 after the show would be over, people wouldn't recognize me anymore.
Worst case scenario, I would spend a bit of money on plastic surgery.
Also, not everyone watches reality shows. Most of my friends don't even know who Kim Kardashian is and I only know about her because people on internet forums and youtube videos mention her from time to time.

It's a "reality" TV show with about as much reality as...well...a reality TV Show :D

Basically, it would be portrayed as a reality TV Show but you would be given a script and really shitty things to do. Cheat on your significant other, kick a puppy, smack a lady or two around, shoot paintball at homeless people because it looked like fun, become a Justin Bieber fan; all the things that make us hate people mixed into one super bag.

The Reality TV Show is everywhere and as long as you are collecting the money, you are on the TV Show (if you leave the TV Show, you lose your paycheck); therefore plastic surgery will not work because everyone will see it. It has become a "Luke, I am your father" type of infiltration into pop culture. People who don't watch TV know your face and what you've done. You are everywhere. There will not be a person alive who will not know of you and your acts of villainy.

Yeah why the hell not, if I can keep a few friends and everybody else hates my guts, I'll take the money. Frankly I don't get on with the majority of the world anyway and would take steps with my vast sums of money to isolate myself from many of them.

While I would of said yes (I would developed an alter ego by wearing make up/ disguised when I'm outside of my domain) but since I on the internet alot, I would have to say no.
The reason being why I cannot see how see why thecyber bullied person bullied stop visiting social site/ ignored the bullies remarks but since if I'm going to be the most hated person in the world, I will see the said hatred right in my face 24/7 online (and elsewhere) including outside of social media sites which I know sooner or later I will succumb to being cuber bullied treatment.

Hell yeah. As long as my close friends are all right with me I don't give a hoot what the general public thinks of me. In fact, being a villain in the public eye sounds way more fun than being a nobody :)

My plan for family with billions and fame is simple. Do no work for years. Move to a country where I'm less well known (or not known at all) and continue to do no work. Raise family, stay low on the radar, let my kids have a real childhood in their adopted country. Eventually move back when they're old enough to my old scene and start making movies again.

This assumes I become a famous director and make it big. This assumes a lot.

I'd probably be an enigma for the industry because I wouldn't twitter (delegating social media to someone else, I'm rich right?), would only do rare interviews about my movies and would not speak to people on the street with cameras pointed at me.

I do not want fame. I've seen what it does.

Just saw this. Absolutely not. I'm going to make my fortune on my own talents, not becoming some popular culture punching bag for the rest of my life. I'll be content with middle class if that's possible.

Pwahaha fuck no. It's really naive to think that I could handle the fame and attention, much less the active hate that's going to be aimed towards me 24/7 in my home and everywhere I go. Look at Kanye West for example; not even real talent is helping to ease the hate. The result? Take a look [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S78tT_YxF_c] for yourself.

Only as a pro wrestling heel. Then it's all in good fun. In real life? Nah, not worth it.

It depends. If I could use the money to fund groups who fight for political, civil, and privacy rights or successfully start my own videogame company without my name compromising any of them then it could be a somewhat "maybe" response.

...if it weren't for the work I'd have to do, I'd go for it. I'd consider the hatred a plus, since I already hate people who are into reality TV. It would be nice if those people would identify themselves without me needing to converse with them.

But no, actually being on such a show, dealing with the cast and crew on a daily basis for years... no amount of money would make that worthwhile. I'd rather shovel human shit full time for minimum wage.

If we're talking hundreds of millions in take home pay then yeah. I could easily save maybe 25% of that for me and my family and funnel the rest into education and social charities.

My feeling is that if I can use the beast to help fund a society less likely to feed it then I'll take the abuse.

No, I wouldn't. I may not be popular, but getting hated would be too much, and having good relations with other humans is far more important than pointless amounts of money.

I would be totally willing to be hated for standing up for my ideals and working through labor that I believe is meaningful to make the world what I believe to be a better place.
/Seconded.

Ideals and the "Right Thing", are worth being hated for. A reality TV show and lots of money is not.
