I bought Xcom days ago, came with Civ 5 as part of the bundle, and at the same price.

Works for me.

If it's a game that I've already set on buying, I don't see why I wouldn't buy it as early as possible. The only exception would be an MMO or title with DRM (getting the physical game means nothing if the servers aren't up).

Well, yeah. If I was looking forward to a game, and was intending to buy it, and it came out early, I'd totally get it. I wouldn't pay a single cent more than it's usual price, though, because that's just fucking retarded. No, really. Retarded. Wait an extra week, and you'd have it then anyway. Wait two months, and it's already reduced price.

Indeed I will. I have, I will, and I will continue to do so! I have already pre-ordered Medal of Honor: Warfighter and I had pre-ordered Fallout: New Vegas in the past. So many times before have I gone into a store, be it GameStop, Wal-Mart, or other places, and I go in to buy a game and they are sold out. So, from that point on if there's a game I think I'd like I'll preorder it so I will never have that crushing disappointment again.

Actually, this is exactly how I played Final Fantasy X back in the day. Granted, it was at a rental store who misread the release date.

On the main question: I just bought Dishonored today on Steam solely so that it would be installed when I go to play it tomorrow, but that's really it. For the most part, it's something I don't worry about.

For preorders in general: Not really a fan. Aside from the general dislike of incentives as a practice, I was also burned pretty badly years ago. Long and short: Twilight Princess before it got pushed back by a year.

Sometimes.

If the game in question is from a series or developer I know produces quality titles, I may be more open to the idea preordering. Or, if the game has a good enough demo/beta preceding it's release, and I enjoyed myself enough playing said demo/beta, then again I'd be more willing to consider preordering.

However, I generally don't do it too early on nor do I preorder anything that isn't discounted in some way; either by lowered price or shipping with a host of extra "goodies".

Likewise, I will only consider preordering games whose development I've been keeping tabs on. Even so, I usually wait for the first few batches of reviews to show up before placing my preorder.

Take Xcom: Enemy Unknown, for example. I preordered it. However, I did so only yesterday.

I found the demo quite enjoyable, but that wasn't enough to convince me to spend fifty bucks.

After seeing the first batch of reviews though, and getting a sense of the passion Firaxis had towards the property during development, I was convinced enough to prepurchase.

[sub]'Course, getting Civilization V and other "bonuses" along with the preorder helped.[/sub]

Depends. What're you offering me for this thing? Or, in fact, is it for my over-anxious girlfriend?

Sure, why not? Though it depends on the circumstances. If I have an other game or two on the go a week or two before its release, I might not feel the urge to buy and play it prematurely. Otherwise if I've really been looking forward to it and am not committed to any other games at that time, absolutely.

For a week if it was a game I wanted, sure.

If I can buy it a year and a half before it comes to the UK then I will definitely. I paid top dollar to get Super Smash Bros Brawl, Metroid Prime Hunters and No More Heroes 2 early and my only regret is that i had to hack my Wii to do it.
