As a fairly invested gamer, I can say that over the recent years, some of my favourite games have been made by indie developers. Limbo, Super Meat Boy and Binding of Issac are some of the few games that I think have proven themselves to be extremely fun games despite the fact that they're only made by a smaller sized development team. They're cheap, very fun and can provide a couple of hours of entertainment each.

But back to the topic at hand, some of these teams are amazing but is the appeal of these titles just their small price tag? If a company like Team Meat said they were going to release a bigger than average game for the normal $50-60 amount that would be spent on a "Triple A title", would you buy it?

I would, but it really depends on the game. Take Bastion or Portal for example. Yes, they're really short, but is the time you spend on them really that much less than you would on a linear shooter's campaign? Also, it depends how much you enjoy the quality of creativity that some indie games provide that other AAA titles can't.

As with anything else: My willingness to pay is proportional to my perceived value of a title.
Regardless of who made it.

If it had enough detail/content? Sure. But it would have to be bloody amazing.

I'm a bit skeptical that a small team could create something the size of Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, or Assassin's Creed on an indie budget. Any indie game would have to be that big in order for me to even ~think~ about buying it. And I'd be really averse to first-day buys because it'd be much harder to tell if you're getting a lemon or a worthwhile game.

At that size it's just no longer possible for it to be truly "indie".

Do I find the game worth $60? Then yes I'd buy it regardless of who developed it. I just doubt an indie team could make that good of a game.

I would pay AAA prices for games with AAA length and complexity. If an indie studio can pull that off, it can have that much of my money.

Who are "these guys"?

I'd buy League of Legends for $60, if it wasn't already a free to play model.
Who the fuck do you think im talking about? Did you not read my fucking post or something? I am obviously talking about fucking indie developers in general. I cant think of a single one that has the experience, knowledge, and capability to actually produce something other then a small indie title.
Alright darling, calm down.

"Indie developers" is a huge amount of people. I'd say Respawn most certainly have the ability to seeing as they developed Call of Duty. Along with Valve if you're being that broad.

In what fucked up world would you ever call Respawn or Valve an indie developer.
The fact that they are owned by themselves making them independent...

Who we are

Respawn Entertainment is an independent video game development studio formed by Jason West and Vince Zampella, former co-founders of Infinity Ward and creators of the multi-billion dollar Call of Duty franchise. The studio is currently working on its first title.

When an indie developer creates an old school RPG where I can pour hundreds of hours into a vast world with deep lore and fleshed out NPCs I will gladly give that developer £40 for that game.

The current handful of indie games I've played? Minecraft probably only comes close and I've spent about £30 on it if I had to.

Also quoted for truth, that's all it takes to be an indie developer guys. Has nothing to do with the size of your company or your budget. Being 'indie' means publishing your own stuff.

EDIT

Nope not at all. People should stick to doing what they know and the only thing those guys know is how to release a small short game. There is a big difference between releasing a "tripple A title" and a $5 game that you play for a few hours and then forget about. These guys dont really have the knowledge or ability to actually produce a game like that.
I call bullshit on this. It's more like they don't have the budget, not the knowledge or ability. To get a big budget you usually have to sign up with a publisher which then nullifies the whole 'indie' thing.

If a game doesn't cost millions to develop, I'm not spending $60 on it.

A game costs nothing to produce, but I still want the price to vaguely reflect the development costs atleast. Those development costs are pure manhours and that can mean a difference between 100 people earning a living or just a couple guys.

How old school you thinking of?

Avadon: Black Fortess [http://store.steampowered.com/app/112100/].
Only played the demo for a tiny bit though so wouldn't know how good the story or lore is really.

Oooh, thanks! I'll be looking into that indeed. And I was thinking back to my Ultima days when I typed out old school.

I paid pretty much full price for Mount and Blade: Warband on the PC.

I quite can remember how much it cost, something like £20-30, but on the strength of the first game I pre-ordered the retail edition of Warband with no consideration of the price and how that compared to AAA titles or it's developer's indie status.

For me, a game's value is based on how much I'm willing to pay for it, not how much I think it should be sold for in comparison to it's development costs, so if another indie game came along that I felt as positive about as I did with Mount and Blade: Warband, then I'd happily pay the equivalent of $60 to buy it at launch, irrespective of it's development costs.
