For all those who don't know, there's a kickstarter project that's genetically engineering glow in the dark plants. (Not a bio major so forgive me if I misuse the terms) I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to know what you guys thought about it. Also if you're going to grab some, what are you going to do with it?

For me it reminded me of Terraria and Avatar. I also hope it works out so that I can place it all over my house but what about you guys?

http://kck.st/ZGyckx is the kickstater site. The backing will end on Jun 6th so if you're interested, you can keep tabs on it until then and decide what you want to do with it. If you back it, they'll send you stuffs like seeds and flowers or shirts and stuff.

Edit : It's bioluminescent and not florescent. Again http://kck.st/ZGyckx is the site for more information.

Sure, sounds pretty cool.

I'm not really a plant person or own any but having a yard full of them glowers would be flippin' sweet. I am sure I would also pick up tons of chicks by telling them how I'm really into planting flowers.

I very nearly ended up backing this, if they delivered seeds to the UK then I definitely would have. I'd really love for someone to try and do this with a longer-living plant than Arabidopsis, maybe an evergreen tree? It'd have a bit more of a practical use as well as looking pretty.

Father Time : Yea, I had the same thought. I'm gona go ask a professor on plants or biology later about the harms of covering a plant at only at night (to block out the light).

Esotera : I saw so many comments about that. I'm sorry for your loss. :(

I Stomp on Kittens : Well... you just gave me a new method of picking up chicks when this comes out. XD

Oh man, I felt like I had just found glow in the dark stickers for the first time...

I read the thread title as "glowing pants" and immediately said "no way". Upon closer inspection, my answer remains the same. I have no use for a glowing plant as cool as it is.

Its a neat project although I'm almost certain its been done before. I mean we've made these:
So glowing plants have also probably been made, just maybe not on the scale these guys are talking about.

I'm a little skeptical of the project though. I'd need to see some credentials before I would give these guys any money. Also not sure what they need 250k for. This seems like a project you could easily do for under 100k, maybe around 50k IMO (that's for just the science).

Goofguy : understandable... however it'd be good for the world to have glowing trees instead of lampposts

NightHawk21 : you're right, it has been done before. They're building on the work of someone else. By the way the goal is 65k, 250k is the total of how much they've already collected.

Glowing plants? I think that's something that I don't mind really. Might be really nice in a garden, but not sure if I'd go to that extent. I think I may also have found something that'll scare me the next time I go down for a midnight snack. x-D

Can't say I have anything against glowing plants. It actually sounds pretty cool.

Florescent flora - Sounds even cooler now.

I read this as Glowing Pants and was going to say that's the dumbest idea I ever heard. Now it's only slightly less dumb. If nature needed to glow, it would look like Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon in here!

He had me a trees instead of streetlights.

As someone who is a biochemistry major, its not actually that hard to make glowing plants. They do it a lot if I'm not mistaken. You attach glowing genes to other genes you want to spice and you know your experiment worked if your product glows or reacts to UV light. I'm pretty sure glowing tobacco was one of the first glowing organisms engineered. They sell genetically engineered glowing fish (called "glofish". They are legal in most countries anyway) I don't know why they haven't made plants yet. If they made fruit that oozed neon juice, I would eat the fuck out of that in minute! (the only threat would be allergens from the enzymes the spliced genes create but there probably aren't any/are rare)

Well that's obvious. You don't even know what field of study this is! Ha Ha Ha *[small]someone punches me in the face for my snobbery[/small]

Edit: dear god, I shouldn't have scrolled down their kick starter page. The commercialization makes me sick (message in DNA?). Oh well. Such is the cost of research I guess

who WOULDN'T buy glowing plants?

that's probably the most useful thing ever just plant them in your garden and it lights itself and annoys all the bugs.

Would buy but not back. I just don't understand the science enough to be able to know if it's doable or not, which is a key factor of any kickstarter project I back.

A common misconception people have with kickstarter. They didn't ask for 250K they've been given 250K by the public. They only asked for 65K, so it's not like they're being greedy or trying to fleece anyone.

As for what they're going to do with +250K how knows, but that's not their fault.

Marie Curie and her husband were at the core of the glowing everything hype.

Turns out the fancy glow-in-the-dark wasn't too cool with having healthy people around.

However, I am absolutely certain that this kickstarter will turn out to be quite entertaining nonetheless.
