Poll: Would you buy the hd remake of a game you already own?

I would not.

Not because of some "ruining the industry!" or "Why are graphics that important" philosophical reasons but because I don't replay games. That's not a real sexy answer but I don't think I've EVER played a video game more than one time the full way through. Even my most favorite games are played once and then put away forever.

I don't know how you do it. Even now, practically sixteen years later, I still semi-regularly go back to play Banjo-Tooie. I've played Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City three or four times each. I can't even recall the number of Commander Shepards I've had, or how many times I've played through the vast majority of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

I should make a thread with a poll asking about it cause I always wonder if I'm the weird one or if everyone else is.

The closest I ever get to replaying a game is when DLC comes out for a game I already played and I need to get back to it (like Fallout 3). Although even that's no longer an issue for if a game comes out and I think I will want the DLC for it, I just don't play it (Hi Fallout 4! How's it going sitting on my shelf instead of in my Xbox One where you probably belong but I'm waiting to play you because I have other games to play that DON'T have a season pass on them).

Although if it makes me feel more normal, I'm like that for all media. Wait...does that make more more weird or less?

See, I can't imagine only ever watching a movie or TV show once either.

There are so many little things that writers/directors/developers put into all of these different forms of media that you'll straight up just miss if you only ever experience it once and then never return. In the case of RPGs, there are often really big things you'll entirely miss if you only ever go through it once. How many people actually knew Vincent Valentine was a character in Final Fantasy VII their first time through the game? Or, hell, to give a personal example, the first time I ever played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, I went through the back door into the police station you've gotta get into, which meant all of the cops rightfully got real upset and were trying to stop me. When I went through the game again, I just talked my way past the front desk and got practically free reign of the place. It's such a dramatic difference in how the game allows you to play, and you just... never see any of that if you drop something forever because you've finished it once.

I dunno, maybe I just value that sort of thing more than you do; I like being able to truly appreciate all of the different things a creator has managed to account for, and I don't feel like I can if I blast through something and then never expose myself to it again.

I'd only buy a remake if it provided something more than a visual overhaul.

For example, I first played Gothic & Gothic 2 only a couple of years ago. The graphics on those games are obviously extremely out of date if you would compare them to the newest games available today, but that didn't stop me from enjoying them. If someone was to release a mod that upgraded the graphics to modern standards (ignoring the issue that this wouldn't actually be possible without re-writing the engine) I'd definitely download it and play through again. If my only cost is time and some internet bandwidth it would be an easy choice.

If a developer wants to sell me the game again, however, then they'll need to provide more than just a visual upgrade. This would create the risk of annoying existing fans who don't like any gameplay changes that are made but I think it's the better way of remaking a game, so long as the original can still be played.

Of course it all depends on the game doesn't it.

For example, I'd pay just about anything for X-COM: UFO Defense. They wouldn't have to change anything about the game whatsoever, in fact I'd much prefer they not touch the game design in anyway, just make it work on modern machines with updated graphics.

Depends on:
The price and how much of a difference it actually makes
Whether I feel like I got more than my moneys worth for the original.
Whether it's a game I like the aesthetic style of or one that is just going to look less shit in HD.
How long ago I played it and whether I feel like replaying it.
Whether they fucked something up.

I think if its done well. If its done badly and makes you want to just play the original then the company doing the remake has failed at there Job. I'm looking at you Halo Collection, and Heart Gold and Soul Silver. I feel like Heart Gold and Soul Silver Play slower then the originals or I just abused the pokemon cloning Glitch to make the original one easier.

Sure, I love remasters (on the PS4 I own 3 remasters and only 1 actual PS4 game). I've gotten remasters on PC as well, but only for decades old games like Age of Empires and Stronghold. I don't see the point in getting Bioshock again unless it's getting an overhaul like Metro Redux.

Are graphics so important to you that you need to see a game updated?

Graphics, yeah, and framerate. Two of the reasons I'm a PC gamer.

It really depends on a few things but I have at times

Halo Combat Evolved

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Windwaker and Twilight Princess

Pokemon Soul Silver (ok it's not just new graphics)

Baldurs Gate

Bethesda games on the PC despite having them on the console.

Fifa every year.... I'm kidding, I don't buy fifa.

Uh no idea really. If it's a game like the Dead Island HD remake that is currently in the works, i.e a game that is only a few years old, a game I still have and runs on my computer and a game that has actually been surpassed by a new game that does everything it does but better (Dying Light) then no.

If it's a game like FF7, a game that is more than a graphical update, real VO, change to gameplay all set inside one of the most loved games of my youth, then probably no.

It's a difficult one, the former isn't old enough and won't have enough changes to justify it being bought again the latter is very much old enough and will have way too many changes to the degree that the only part of the game that is the same will be the narrative (and I am willing to bet that Squaresoft will find a way of fucking with that too.)

The only time I would buy an HD remastered version of a game would be if I had not played the original and the game, for whatever reason, doesn't have a more up to date sequel.
