it'd be touchy... the "games don't make kids violent" arguement will be a lot harder to argue when there's 1:1 realism.... whether or not it would promote violence is almost completely irrelevant, but it'd just be harder to argue against

I don't understand the saying...

Any way, I think it could be cool, but it might be weird at first. Without the visual gap I can see some people being a bit weirded out.

The big producers would never go for it. Real life has far too much light and far too little brown for them to be able to make a AAA title out of. You know how loath they are to mess with a formula that works.
or you can have it like real life at first, then have something surreal happen.

Like Earthbound or Heavy Rain.

...fuck. I saw the thread of "would you hate it if games looked like real life" and voted "no." Apparently the question changed somewhere between the thread title and the poll, because the answer is still "No, I would not hate it.

So realistic, you can almost smell the blood?

Anyway, how do we do that with Superheroes and Werewolves?
There's no copper in blood. It's not an actual phrase though, he's probably talking about tortured electronics from this new tech which isn't coming.

From now, I don't think graphics in games are going to get any better unless you sink millions into it, which noone is going to do at this stage. Noone is willing to pour money into the games industry unless there's a clear gimmick to push. That gimmick will be 3D and you won't see any remarkable improvements in graphics until that's sorted. I highly doubt any increase in graphics will really be noticed though so it doesn't really matter.

That post doesn't read very well. I'm tired, leave me alone.

I guess it would be alright... but imagine what it would do to the first person shooter market. Everyone would stop playing FPS's because they'd be just too damn horrifying.

That would be a good thing. It would do wonders for immersion. And characterisation would be improved by realistic looking people who could display nuanced expressions and such.

However, it would not be a good thing if all games were to look photo-realistic. Games like Team Fortress 2 are improved by their stylized, non-realistic art style. It would be a shame to lose that.

Just picture Super Marios Bros. 3 with completely realistic graphics, it would just be stupid. It would still be fun, but it wouldn't be charming. Some games would benefit, hell, many games would benefit, but there'd be a good portion that lose their charm.

It would literally need to be picture perfect in every single way imaginable, otherwise we get to visit the Uncanny Valley once again.
Besides, only certain games could really pull it off, there are some that rely on their stylised graphics (see: Borderlands, Team Fortress 2) as part of their winning formula, whilst others would probably benefit from a nice dose of literal graphical realism.

Still, I'd like to see the computer or console that could perfectly render the human form in the most complete, flawlessly real life way possible without bursting into flames.

I wouldn't hate the concept, but I'd be somewhat adverse to it, considering I play games to escape real life. If they look like real life, I'd just get dragged into the depressing monotony that is...You know...Real life.

Already happened. See: Crysis
The characters looked a tad shaped.

Seriously, everyone can calm down about Crysis. Far Cry 2 looked better, and nothing has achieved truly "real" visuals yet.

Absolutely not for a very good reason: If you're going to such lengths to make video games LOOK realistic, you want to make them FEEL realistic also. That involves full immersion for the player, which leaves two options; One, have video games integrate with real life and two, integrate the player themselves within the game.

I'll never buy the realistic games idea. They're games for crying out loud. They're not supposed to be realistic just like movies shouldn't be interactive.

Live-action movies already look like reality, so why not games? In fact, it's already been done in games like Myst and Riven, with footage of living actors incorporated into the game world.

Nah, games need their own style to appeal to their target audience and help to contribute to the overall "mood" of the game. Would I want to play Saint's Row 2 if it wasn't kind of cartoony? Well maybe, but I think I'd fun it less fun. Even the "realistic" call of duty games like COD4 and MW2 are sufficiently unrealistic so as not to detract from the fun. Make everything too real and it would become distracting.

Hah, remember back in the 90's when for some games it was cheaper and easier to do actual filmed cutscenes complete with dodgy special effects, instead of rendering a cutscene with CGI?
The cutscenes from the original Jedi Knight game are fantastic, in a trashy sci-fi kind of way.
