Would you have preferred Bioware or Obsidian to produce KoTOR3 as a single player game to what we got, TOR?

I definitely would have. From what I have been hearing, TOR butchers the continuity set up by KoTOR1 and 2 which is really sad. I wish Obsidian could have written the story for the next KoTOR game.

Also I can't justify spending monthly fees to play a game. A one off purchase would have been much better for me.

I would have preffered either KotOR3 or a proper MMO for TOR. From what I've seen, TOR is somewhere between an MMO and a single player game and doesn't do either thing too well.

Honestly, I'm kinda hoping that someone puts out a mod that lets people play TOR as a single player game...

Same, if I can get a mod which will allow me to play TOR and Diablo 3 offline I'll be a happy chappy.

Definitely would prefer it as a single player game by bioware. The fact that it's an mmo means I'm not going to look at so much as play it.

Interesting poll.

I've been a fan of Bioware since the release of the original Baldur's Gate and they have consistently shown a very high standard of quality across the board. However I would much rather have played a KOTOR 3 developed by Obsidian.

They just have a far better flair for writing and characterization as apposed to Bioware's fairly safe approach. I am also an unashamed apologist for Obsidian's faults. Bugs and glitches in games don't enrage me like they do a lot of people. Anything that renders a game unplayable is unacceptable of course but for the rest, scorpions doing handstands, dogs with eyeballs orbiting their heads or Hutts with no skin textures are a small price to pay for another great Obsidian narrative.

I would of liked KoTOR 3 by Bioware. They really know how to do story quite well.

I enjoyed KoTOR 1 more than KoTOR 2.The second game was quite buggy.

KOTOR 3 by Obsidian, thier writing for KOTOR 2 was incredible. It included complex philosophy, likeable and endearing characters, despite the rush by those lucasarts bastards it was the best thing to happen to Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back.

Personally I liked KotOR 1's writing better than 2's writing. Granted, 2 was literally an unfinished game, but you can't make judgments on what could have been. I did like how in the 2nd game you could turn nearly everyone in your crew into a sith or a jedi, but the fact that the first game was actually a complete game puts it ahead in my book.

As for the question at hand, yeah, I would have MUCH rather seen a KotOR 3 that tied together the first 2. Revan goes off to fight some ancient galactic threat, The Exile goes off to join him.......then that story just kinda gets abandoned. I remember a few years ago I was curious if they were going to be making a 3rd KotOR. So I looked it up, only to find in it's place an MMO was in the works. That made me a saaaaaaaaaad panda. u.u

Also, HK-47 = the best robot in any series, any genre, any media format ever.

I wanted Obsidian to write KOTOR 3's story while biowear did the programing. Because frankly I loved the story from KOTOR 2 and at least Kotor 1 felt completed. But to answer the question ask from the title of the thread, YES! A million times YES! I was outraged when I heard that it was getting the MMO treatment and that KOTOR was getting a book.

Not sure what version you played but I played it on the original xbox and despite really digging the story and characters the game was definitely in a woeful state. It had a lot of problems during development many of which actually weren't Obsidian's fault. The worst being LucasArts giving them only a year to go from 0 to a finished game and refusing to push the release back to allow them to polish it up.

I recently bought the pc version and was pleasantly surprised though. Many of the glaring issues have been patched and for the rest there is a great fan-restoration mod that fixes all the broken quests and bugged dialogue. Playing through it in fits and spurts with these it's easily superior to the original overall.

I personally feel Lucasarts should have handed Obsidian the license to KOTOR 3 and a $100 million budget to make up for the monumental way they fucked them over during KOTOR 2's development. The fact that the game still managed to be the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the Thrawn trilogy is a testament to how good Obsidian's writing is.
I felt very much the same thing. The first time my character met Atris, I was like "holy sh**! A brand new SW character with actual depth and a nuanced point of view!". I was genuinely torn in my opinion of the Jedi after that. Also, following a seemingly random encounter on Nar Shaddaa, when Aton revealed his secret ... !!

KotOR2 + TSLRCM [http://deadlystream.com/forum/files/file/13-tslrcm/] = pure wonderfulness

It was probably the best gaming experience I had in 2011. Fixed bugs, restored content, the HK51 factor... I can't even express how transcendently happy it made me.

My answer is easily Knights of the Old Republic 3 under Obsidian. I'd rather they be the ones penning the activity in the far reaches of the Galaxy. I love BioWare, but the way they handled The Exile in the Revan novel (and, I assume, in TOR as well) was a slap in the face to any KotOR II fan.

agreed! and now we march on congress to get what we want!

KotOR II was the greatest game, the characters rock and the story was brilliant!

Yes, I'd definitely buy SWTOR if it was a single player game. It's a good game but it's not a good MMO.

And why do you keep saying that? Just because you don't like it when someone else walks around with the same companion as you? As an MMO it's fine actually, it does pretty much everything one could expect from a subscription MMO these days.

Ontopic: I don't know, I would've liked both if possible. I can enjoy both types of games.

If this is what we should expect from a subscription MMO these days then thank god for the rise of F2P.

Yes, I find the identical companions jarring, but they're not my biggest problem with The Old Republic, though they are the most obvious example of Bioware taking an element from their single player games and just bolting it onto an MMO with little regard for whether or not it makes sense.

Like I said, not my biggest problem though. That would be the absolutely crushing linearity of the game... and the flat, lifeless worlds with their rubbish weather effects and inexplicable absence of a day/night cycle... and the "you are the chosen one and so is everyone else" story... and that every class is a pet class... and the fact that it plays like World of Warcraft: Star Wars Total Conversion. Really, if I wanted to play WoW I'd, y'know, play WoW.

Oh trust me, the Exile gets the shaft. She's turned from her own character into a fangirl jedi who hero worships Revan.

I'm with you on the Obsidian part. They created one of the most unique perspectives on the Star Wars mythos that I've ever seen.

Also, Hassat_Hunter and Stoney are working on the 1.8 Update for The Sith Lords.

For me, The Old Republic IS KOTOR3. It's a MMORPG, but you don't actually HAVE to indulge the two "M"s if you don't want to. I certainly haven't.
