The aim of a good gift, I think, should be to surprise the person who recieves it.

To give someone a gas mask as a gift is a great way to show them that you put some serious, outside-the-box thinking into the matter. They may not need a gas mask, or even specifically want one, but you KNOW that, on Christmas day, your friend's entire household will have a serious WTF - moment. Because of you.
