It just occurred to me that outside of the strategy genre, there are few - if any - games about or set during the American Revolutionary War. Frankly, I think this is a rich subject and open to a variety of different styles of play.

Further discussion: What sort of game would you make about the Revolution?

Not a FPS. Muskets were shit by all definitions of the word, man.

Too many RTSes about the Revolution, though...no, on second though, I would do a FPS.

But it would involve lots of charging forward, hoping you don't get shot out of nowhere, and stabbing people in the face with bayonets.

I say that for games in the enlightenment era, I would stick mostly to strategy. FPS kinda sucks because the tactics are very bland, and the guns take 20 seconds to reload.

Mount & Blade is probably the best non-strategy game that is set even in the right era.

Hells yeah I would play that. More specifically as some sort of shooter. They could also have the native american allies that both sides used in the war as well.

Empire: Total War had a campaign mode that revolved around this. It was a pretty good strategy game all in all.

Maybe something like Rockstar does?
Really,I really don't want to wait 3 minutes to load my musket of no aim, even if snipers were invented in the revo war.

I was thinking about this not too long ago, and it would be extremely interesting to make a game revolving around this. It wouldn't work too well as a straight up FPS, simply because of the inherent inaccuracies of the weapons of the time period coupled with the length of time it takes to reload and everything else. A shooter with RPG elements, however, would probably work out well, being able to increase your accuracy as you gained experience, reload the weapon faster, etc. Alternatively, making one in a style similar to Bioware party-based games would probably work out well too; it'd make the weapon speed and player accuracy and whatnot less of a factor. I feel like it'd be a hard one to do, but if it were done right it would be freaking awesome.

A political intrigue game, where you play as the French causing as much trouble as possible for the British?

Anyone played the start of Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood?

Full game on that concept.

So we know period shooters are a hard sell. Fair enough.

What about a Fable-style adventure?

the revolution had a good history but you have to look at it logically from a publishers perspective:

-if the game were to be a FPS then the guns would have to take over a minute to reload and have horrible accuracy even at close range (like playing CoD4 using sniper rifles from the hip essentially)
-the only market interested in a revolution type game would be the people from that nation (US citizens would be the ones most interested in the US revolution game)
-if it were an rts then the number of units would be very small in number by only allowing cavalry, infantry, and artillery
-while the fights back then were brutal, they were slow (sieges would last days) and battle formations and trench warfare were huge back then (playing as a soldier poping his head out of a trench every few minutes to shoot isnt very entertaining and standing in a line waiting for your turn to should is dull)

in truth, i would love to play a game set during the american revolution but i think it is simply impossible to do this without horrible mechanics

A third person RPG would work really well for an American Revolution game. Fire your rifle, hide, reload. Shorten the reload times to something manageable like 8 seconds. Put the focus on stealth and politicking, rather than combat, and I think you could go pretty far.

Basically Fallout 3 with less gun, more horses.

Yes... but I would preffer it to be an RPG similar to Oblivion or Fallout in design, with the ability to join the faction of your choice as you progress through the historical setting (British, Americans... Iroquois.... PIRATES!)

Also, I would require the mechanics to allow a backflip tomahawk kill ablility...

Heck, this could work easily as a Fable Spinoff. I mean, Albion is basically Britain... with magic...

imagine 2 people running at each other with muskets. they both fire and miss and then stand there 2 meters apart reloading for 20 secs. best FPS EVAR!

what about an american revolution MMORPG. running around doing quests for your faction. grinding rep with the 13 colonies. join pvp battles in historic sites.

this game basically just writes it self.

Spying and espionage were a huge factor in the Revolution. A mission-based, colonial Splinter Cell?

Not an FPS and there are already quite a few RTS about it. Action Adventure may work if you were to be a rifleman and had a gun that actually shot straight. Now an American Civil War game (likely an RTS or TBS) with a modern engine (mainly in terms of a modern UI, graphics aren't too important), that I would play.
