Poll: Would you play a Mass Effect-like game without any action sequences, only about talking to aliens?

So, if you follow my posts in response to news on Mass Effect games, you might know that I essentially consider it to be a game about talking to people and people-like alien entities in space with some shooty bits to waste my time in between. You might also be a stalker and/or Sam. Hey Sam how are you?

Now while I say this in a hollow attempt to be funny, it isn't far from the truth. I didn't like the combat in either installment of the series, but loved the game anyway because of the way it handled conversations. Sure, it's not the most awesome chatting simulator in the galaxy, but that was the part that stuck the most with me. As far as I'm concerned, the final ME might have CoD style twitch gameplay or have turn-based combat, and I wouldn't care as long as I still got to chat to people.

That got me wondering... am I the only one who would enjoy a game that was entirely about talking to people in space? There aren't many games exclusively about that - even adventure games that have a lot of talking are more about finding items - so I think it could be an interest take.

Also, it wouldn't be just Mass Effect in which the action bits are replaced by your character showing up and saying 'boy sure it just was a terribly exciting gunfight that one we just were in, eh chaps?'. The game would be entirely about talking, so it would be geared towards it. Here's how I see it:

- OK, it's not an actual Mass Effect game, but it's on a similar setting - you're a leading figure for humanity in a sci-fi Star Trek style world in which mankind are the new kids on the block and are being evaluated for entry in the big space boys club. Only you're a diplomat (or a hustler?) going to places and talking to people instead of shooting them in the face and punching them also in the face. (Or it could be another ME game, if it helps you imagine how it'd go.)

- Instead of the dual Paragon/Renegade thing, it would have a bunch of measurements to your character. Like, maybe there would be a Honest/Rogue meter for how well s/he follows rules, a Likeable/Demanding meter for whether s/he is nice to people or just shouts at them, a Funny/Strict meter to see how much s/he likes jokes, etc. Like in ME, each would grow independently, but unlike ME, only to a point - let's say your value in two opposing meters can't be higher than 100, so if you're 20 Honest/10 Rogue you can get a lot of Honest points without problem, but if you're at 40 Honest / 10 Rogue every point you gain to Honest will subtract one from Rogue.

- Having very high values in a meter would allow for different, more beneficial interactions, but would also forbid other interactions. For instance, suppose there's a situation in which a high ranking Hxhsdxbhshdbxb'nkjnian diplomat is hit on the face with a pie. There would be a lot of option on how to deal with the perpretrators, but if you had a high level of Strict you wouldn't be able to completely forgive them, and if you had a high level of Funny you wouldn't be able to seriously punish them. This means increasing your levels isn't a given, and playing a second time would give you a radically different experience.

- You wouldn't have different party members, but you could maybe get people into your crew, and people in your crew might give you better options. For instance, maybe getting a xenobiologist might help you talk to an alien doctor on the same level, or getting a space lawyer would help you talk your way out of police activity.

- And of course you would still be able to pork your crew members, giving you beatiful views of space furniture.

So... would this game interest you at all?

Not really, it seems like a politics sim. I get how the idea may appeal so some people but it will most cetainly turn to niche appeal very quickly.

No... but I would WATCH it. And occasionally press buttons to decide what Shepard says (or more accurately, decide the tone of what Shepard says). That's not a game, though, it's a very long interactive cutscene.

A thousand times yes. Or, at the very least, still have sections of non-combat gameplay.

On a slightly related note, I've been playing Deadly Premonition recently and the terrible combat in that caused me to stop playing it and read what happened in the story. I also read that the combat sections also originally weren't planned to be in the game. Would have made it much better that way.

So yeah, I'd love to see a game like this with no combat as bad combat is a big reason I'll stop playing a game.

You can sort of play Planescape: Torment like this. There's still some dungeon-crawling you have to do, but pacifist runs are absolutely a possibility. So yeah, but the writing would have to be on the Planescape: Torment level, not the Bioware level. (Although I thought some of the loyalty missions were a lot closer to this level of quality than the rest of the game.)

Sure, but I doubt it would be as good as Mass Effect. The conversations and things were the parts I enjoyed most about ME, but the combat added some nice variety and context for what you were doing. I also think it would be a lot harder to make events seem urgent and important without combat, though it might be doable (and if anyone could pull off a game like this, it would be Bioware).

Yup.

Except there is an easier way of accomplishing a similar goal. All you need to do is speed up the combat dramatically. Have only a handful of enemies (or less) in each encounter, no respawning, arenas or impenetrable cover. Make people die from one to three shots.

Gunfights would last less than a minute and you could get back to the dialogue and exploration without sacrificing the urgency of the story.

But I would play your idea as well. With my FemShep, it would be like Embric of Wulfhammer's SPACESHIP.

I like the balance in Mass Effect I think variety is the spice of life and even though I like the dialogue in Mass Effect I would get bored if that's all it was nonstop.

Plus it would have little replay value for me at least.

I wouldn't play it, in the same way I wouldn't play a game that was entirely about combat, or that was so story based it was like watching a film, or was just a platform for how good the new graphics looked. A good game should combine all of these things and plenty more to boot. Some people might like this, but when I've played games a bit like this before (Heavy Rain being the prime example) I've just found it a bit dull.

maybe if they made it a battle of wits type thing sort of like phoenix wright or something, but if it was just running around talking to people there probably wouldn't be enough mental stimulation to keep me interested.

Maybe... but they'd have to put some gameplay mechanics within the dialogue

Phoenix Wright style perhaps?

No. Conversation to improve the game works building a game on wordy talky doesn't. Talking is not a mechanic because it offers no puzzle or challenge and is thus boring. In order to make that work you'd need to overhaul the conversation system to produce a viable game and honestly that means its no longer just mass effect is mass effect+: shut your mouth edition. It sound boring to me to just have the conversation system. To each his own but that game wouldn't get my credits money.

I'd give it a shot. It's been ages since I've played a game that doesn't require you to kill something at every turn.
