Well, if the choice is between being feared by EVERYONE or loved by EVERYONE I think I might go for the former option - I don't mind being alone, but I think I'd pretty much mind if everybody was trying to spread their affection over me all the time.
Ideally, though, I'd be loved by the small group of people I actually care for and feared by everyone else. A bit like it is for me now, actually.

Being feared really sucks. Ultimately you get the same rewards for being either only when your loved you don't have to worry much about the people giving to you plotting against you.
You know, I never thought of applying western-RPG-style plot twists/development to my personal life.
Both game wise and life wise its better. In real life though, unless you have rediculous power like a mafia boss or some shit you're not gonna make it far being feared.
*cough* Stalin *cough*
Although he was both loved (or rather revered) and feared. At the same time. By the same people. However, calling his reign one of terror is not hyperbole. The point is, he got incredibly far, mostly through fear and propaganda. On the other hand, he died alone of a stroke (I think it was a stroke) because everyone was too scared to enter his room to find out what was wrong. No doctor was called, and he died alone.

However, I don't want to be the ruler of the largest socialist state in the history of mankind, I'd rather be loved.

Must...reach...cyanide pills.

On-topic:I just realized what I should have said in my previous post.
I would prefer to be loved by females and feared my males. Now Higurashi, let go of me before I detonate the C4 on my back.
Mm.. I was of the same opinion back in the days, before I realised how much love I was missing out on there as well. And no, not sexual love. *disarms C4 deftly while hugging*

Love leads to fair-weather leadership, where more is placed in pleasing than accomplishing.

I'd rather be loved. I would prefer having people follow my lead because they want to rather than because they fear that I would kill them.

Machiavelli was a genius...but still...I'd rather be loved.
Remember, Machiavelli wanted rulers to be both feared and loved.

Anyways, loved for me. It just sounds like something I'd like, and it'd cause a few less headaches, I imagine. Plus, I most likely wouldn't have to worry about assassination as much if I were loved.

It takes much less work to be feared than loved, but I'm assuming that you're giving it away for free, so I'll be loved. As bitter and cynical as I am, there have been a couple of occasions where people's faces have lit up when I walked into the room, and it's a pretty cool feeling. So I'd take that over people trembling when I come in any day of the week.

Loved.

Being feared is alot of work and too many things can go wrong.

Plus if you find yourself in a helpless situation, those who fear you won't fear you anymore but those who love you will probably lend a hand.
