Both are fine folks to talk with. Being a little bit of both myself I need to say either one since I really can't decide.
I haven't met a switch who wasn't heavily leaning one way or the other. For milder spanking or stuff like that switching is fairly easy, but for something like..Demented Teddy said:

..you really need to be psychologically prepared to be totally submissive or extremely dominant. Now I am not saying that switches don't exist, just that they are a lot rarer than people realize.

The pins was one of the milder examples that came to mind from what I might say "history" if I was at a confession, which I am not, so I will just say that trust me, these things do go on.
From a purely psychological perspective:-
It is a lot more common than you might think. The thing about it is that it tends to be addictive and it tends to feed itself. Once you get to a certain stage with it you become extremely desensitized to actual pain and/or psychological torture during the act. You know when you see stuff on various sites and wonder "how the hell can that person tolerate that?!", it is because your brain enters an almost tranced/narcotized state when you enter the 'zone' as it were, and the brutality actually feels different.
A hopelessly inadequate analogy would be comparing the pain of a bad tooth and the pain you feel after a heavy exercise session. Due to the chemicals flowing through your blood and brain, one sense of pain becomes something you can end up craving, while the other is something you'll do anything to avoid.
Maybe a mild Sadist, nothing extremely inhumanly brutal, just a little rough now and then. That would be fine.
I'd say Masochist just so I didn't have to worry about having pain inflicted on me, but since, according to my therapist, I actually AM a masochist, a sadist would help mix it up a little.

Firstly i will say that i don't really like either masochism or sadism... (bondage yes, everybody likes a bit of bondage

I'd go with masochist. It'd be easier for me but i'd hate to see someone hurt themselves even if they do enjoy it.
On the other hand i'd be paranoid of the sadist, he'd probably be the prank pulling type. Painful pranks D:

Sadism and masochism aren't psychiatric disorders... So you can't self diagnose it, since it doesn't exist as a disorder in the way the OP means.Pegghead said:
