Oi!
Basically, I was wondering how space-hungry The Escapist population is.
The poll consists of progressively worse options for colonization. How many of you will vote for one of the lower options?

As for me, hell. I'd want to be a part of it, no matter what option.
Even if I never got to see this new world, I'd love to travel through space and know I'd be a part of something so important!

What about you? The poll is waiting...
And feel free to comment or propose additional poll options as well!

Hell, to travel among the stars is worth dying again. I'd do it.
Not like any good is coming from sitting around on this back-water planet...

Sure, sounds fun. As long as I don't have to wear a red shirt (because as we all know, going into space with a red shirt equals death)

What would be the point of going if you would be dead by the time you arrived? And how would people have discovered it in the first place?

Wait, wait, isn't there some weird thing that happens in space--when you're flying that fast--you don't age correctly or something. My professor was talking about it in my physics class...or maybe he was talking about some SCifi show...I can't remember.

It never ends well with those things.

Although if people try to make space travel gates near the moon I'll move to mars. (cookie if you get the reference)

I don't mind waiting for decades if it means setting foot on another planet, to be one of the first colonists of a new civillisation would send shivers down my neck. I draw the line at not getting there though my frontier spirit would demand i at least touch this planet.

Do they give cookies if I go?
Yes, the spaceship will even have its own cookie-factory on board.

Well, I dunno. Knowing your grandkids would get to see it? Knowing your service to mankind will never be forgotten? Something like that?
As for your second question... telescopes? If it was a planet rather close by, the images we'd receive would only be a couple of years old (so we could assume that the planet will still be there by the time we'd arrive).

The faster you move, the slower time moves around you. It's related to Einstein's equation e=mc^2. Here's [http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/einstein/hotsciencetwin/] a better way to understand it than I could say in words.

To be part of colonisation, sure.
It'd be cool to be part of building civilisation on a whole new planet.
Just, you know, not so cool if we fuck it up.

I believe it's the closer you are travelling to the speed of light, the slower time passes for you compared to everything else. I'm fairly sure that's how it works, anyway.

Anyway, to answer the OP, I would probably go, no matter what. I mean, potentially spending decades in a spaceship drifting through the void might be boring at times, but then again, SPACE! It would be nice if it were a particularly cool sci-fi ish spaceship rather than the type we have now (I'm assuming it would have to be). Colony ships tend to be huge, so at least I'd be able to explore somewhat. Hopefully we'd run into some interesting things along the way too.

I wouldn't really mind what type of planet we ended up on, though obviously an Earth-like one would be preferable. I'd be excited either way, being one of the first humans out there and part of something so important would be great.

As long as I don't get wiped out by a giant robotic space squid with a pet cockroach I'm cool.

Oh, and it better not be built by that douche from Civilization. I don't want to meet my first alien stepping off the USS Space Turtle.

Only if the planet is Earth-like, has some basic comforts available and enough people are going.

I would go, but I ask the question, what would we do with our worldly possessions? Do we really need money on a colony ship? On a new Colony? Would introducing our earthly objects ruin the biology of a new planet? Would it be safest if we all had to wear similar clothing and use similar items like a commune? Either way, sounds like fun.
