Ridiculous question. It would be at least a decade before anything not-pornographic was released for the holodeck. Exhibit A: the informational porno from Futurama's classic episode: A Big Piece of Garbage.

":Fry: Wow, you got that off the Internet? In my day, the Internet was only used to download pornography.
:professor Farnsworth: Actually, that?s still true.
:[In the movie]
:Female Scientist: Now that the, uh, garbage ball is in space, Doctor, perhaps you can help me with my sexual inhibitions?
:Male Scientist: With gusto."

Imagine all your news like this, except the anchors also perform sex acts on you while presenting the news. Bizam: CNN suddenly became transplendent.

if/when holodeck tech is invented, porn will be the reason. it's one of society's greatest driving forces. pr0n invented the internets, after all.
Porn didn't invent the internet, they where just one of the early business driving the success of the internet.

It would be the same with this. It would be expensive, and a novelty, and an amazing piece of tech. Something the inventor sees as a boon for humanity. Then the porn industry would get their claws into it, prices would drop and soon after there would be one in every home.
wow... you didn't seriously think i (or anyone else) actually believed that porn "invented" the internet, did you? it's a joke, kinda like how Al Gore invented it. however, i do stand by my assertion that sex is a huge motivator, and the desire for better/easier sex will probably lead to something like a holodeck.
Wow... You didn't actually think I cared if you where joking or not? I was just using the post as an easy way to jump into my point.

Wait, wait, that might come across as to cruel to respond in kind.

How about the old tired speech about how without obvious clues the intent of your message does not come across quite like you mean it to, as body language and tone make up far more of a normal conversation then you might realize. Is that better?

I actually think this is what porn is going to hopefully be like in the future. I mean, it could never replace actual loving relationships but you know, when you can have sex with a virtual supermodel whenever you want, why do anything else at all?

Only the super-rich people will be able to own those things, so everyone else will have to go to holodeck places or something. It'll be like in the old days before the internet, when people had to go to adult movie theaters to get their porn. That as well as the spectacular cost it's going to take to use those things might be a downer for some people.

I disagree. Porn CAN and DOES often replace those "Meaningful" (See: Meaningless) relationships for a lot of people. Well porn and hookers.

But seriously some people just aren't easily compatible with others. Or sheep. Some people have personal issues that generally lead them into bad relationships. Some people enjoy being alone over having people around.

I think if holodeck technology was ever invented, we'd probably all end up never leaving our homes. I mean serious. If I can have artificial friends, and lovers, and family members... Wtf am I gonna get real ones for?

ok, how about this... i just found it odd that anyone would question it, for 2 reasons, both relating to the absurdity of my statement. first of all, as i noted, my use of "pr0n" and "internets" should have been a subtle clue to my facetiousness (does anyone use those un-ironically?). second, even if those clues were missed, my statement was so absurd as to need no correction. it's something a moron would claim. and why would anyone bother to correct a moron? so, either i was obviously joking, or i was a total idiot, and nothing you could tell me would change my beer-swilling, NASCAR-watching mind.

also, seriously not offended at all, i just found it very befuddling that anyone would take issue with that comment.

*edit* on second thought, i guess my second point is fallacious, because people try to correct idiots all the time, no matter how obviously futile (see: 9/11 Conspiracies, Moon Landing Hoaxers, Biblical Literalists, etc.).

I'm sorry, but are you suggesting that there are no meaningful relationships?
Or only that people who find that "porn and hookers" can replace real relationships are less 'able' to engage in a meaningful relationships?

Because if it's the first one, you're beyond wrong. I mean, not subjectively 'it's your opinion' wrong...but objectively, flat out, embarrassingly wrong.

But if it's the second one, I'd be inclined to agree. Those who are able to find comfort in porn probably aren't able to engage in a meaningful relationship, especially given how far from reality porn is.

More on topic: No, probably not.
Games? Heck yeah.
New way of watching movies? Like, being an extra while shit happens around you? Sure! Sign me up.
Porn? Pass.

Personally I would be really tempted to re-create all the past girlfriends, hotties I had a crush on back in the day, and hot co-workers and have gratuitous sex with them all day and night. Hmmm probably never get any work done...evil technology.
That..sounds like pretty much what I would do! Be able to have sex with all those girls who just wanted to stay friends, and all those girls who were just far too hot for you.

Minus the ex part, that could create some pretty fucked up, powerful memories and emotions.

Exactly. I was going to respond with something about the depths of human stupidity. Especially how you cannot underestimate it.

Mostly I was going to respond with how easy it can be for an otherwise normal modestly intelligent person to get a completely wacky idea in their head, something that if they think about it for a second they will realize they never should have believed.

I can see a few people that wouldn't watch porn, so it wouldn't interest them to watch porn in a holodeck type situation. However as you showed with the "extra" example, you wouldn't necessarily have to star in the porn you are playing in the holodeck, you could just be watching it, holographic porn in other words.

O.K. just like it says above; if holodeck technology existed would you use it to fulfill your most perverted ideas?
And my decision was made right there.

XD But in all seriousness, yes. Sorry, people get boring, and while I've played around with the idea of casual sexual relationships they dont owrk, so I this seems to be the easier alternative. Besides, there's stuff my gf wont do that I would like to.

Is that an OR or an XOR? XOR would be mean - and unrealistic.

All technology is ultimately used for porn. It's what drives the internet. Not all this "money and education" crap.

I'm not going to post that "The Internet is for Porn" song, but I am going to listen to it now.

holodeck is 4 porn

I mean, its pretty obvious that that is EXACTLY what it will be developed for, and will be the second application developed for it.

The first application will be moving pictures around with your hands.

Just checking- this isn't like Star Wars holographic where everything is blue (or green in other movies) and line-y, right? Because if it's in full colour... Yes.

The problem would be getting the three dimensional shots of the hot girls in class. And on the streets. And in their homes. Man, a boy has to work hard for his porn in the future, because lemme tell you, I bet the stock models will be shit.
