WoW is certainly not the BEST, but what is best? Video games are like movies or paintings in the sense that everyone can have their own opinion and views on it that do not hold true for any other people.
What WoW has in it's favor though, is allot. A large player base for instance makes sure that people that want more MMO in their RPG get what they desire. It also makes the game popular, instead of playing something obscure your playing the World of Warcraft everyone's heard off. Which increases the likely hood you'll meet someone in real life that plays it, and any MMO'er knows nothing bonds like a shared passion for a game.
The easy straightforward (simple) controls make sure that even a novice doesn't feel intimidated.
The moderate amount of customization ensures that everyone has a distinct 'personal' character but because of the limitations on customization that other games offer (armor dye's, height slider, body-types, armor model switch etc) there is never a truly unique character, which has benefits, and subconsciously creates a 'group' feeling of belonging.
More interesting for me though is how zealous the defenders of wow and ex-wow'ers are in their never ending crusade to promote/demolish WoW. It's my theory that the defenders refuse to accept all their in game gotten goods are null outside of the game, and the status they achieve ingame might be profound it's not tangible outside. And Ex-wow'ers for the same reason ex-smokers are such pious and verbal knights in the battle against nicotine, they have to convince themselves that what they have done is bad, evil, wicked and wrong to not fall back into the habit... I got offtopic...
Conclusion, it's good. It brings people together and paves a road to making games a more accepted medium for entertainment and a more viable/accepted hobby.
