I played Guild Wars first then moved onto WoW.

Guild Wars is good (and cheap nowadays) but finding groups to do PvE (like main leveling quests) is difficult unless your doing a "mission" (kind of like a dungeon in WoW, but more story orientated, makes more sense to say its like the book quests in Lord of the Rings online.)
There are bot helpers you can take in Guild Wars around with you, and thereis just one big server so if any of your friends join they wont have to worry about getting on the right server (not that its a big deal)

WoW is big. Much bigger, and alot more social.
Yourll find it alot easier to find random groups to do quests with and the world is persistant, unlike in Guild Wars where only the towns have real players running around, the outside world is just for you and whatever group your in. (Pros and Cons for both there)
It does have alot of grinding, unlike the level cap of 20 in Guild Wars but you can hit 20 within the first %50 of the story (depending on version you get), its not about what level you are its how well you play in Guild Wars.
WoW has alot more todo and the profession system makes it a much deeper game (where you take a "job" like mining/tailor/enchanter ect) thats completly not in Guild Wars.
Personally I dont regret buying Guild Wars but I do regret the money I sank into WoW...
I know nothing of endgame WoW.

But basicly...
Guild Wars for PvP and WoW for PvE.

(dont play either anymore)

None! Life destroying games. ;3 Go play outside!

Then again, if you already have no life or you're allergic to the sun or something... I'd go for WoW..

Guild Wars, its not as addicting as wow, and it wont ruin your life.

Not to mention its free.

To put it bluntly: fuck off with the bullshit of "WOW DESTROYS LIVES" its getting old.
It might get old, maybe because it's true.

I guess some people have trouble facing the fact that they are obsessed with some fictional character within a game. I know, it's addictive. :3 But still.
How is that true? A small minority of people who need to get their priorities in order against the millions who play it and can easily get on with whatever else they're doing in their lives. If we're going to go for broad and stupid generalisations then fine. Everything that Jack Thompson has said about video games is true, games like grand theft auto are murder simulators.

Get Guild Wars for a) much easier to get into, b) no subscription fee and c) PvP in Guild Wars wins especially since they added the Zaishen Quests.

EDIT: 1337 ;).

I play WoW currently and have played GW in the past. WoW offers more of a chance to get to know people and hang out and chat if you dont feel like playing for hours on end. I have to recommend WoW, just based on the social factor.

After hearing all of these responses, I can't help but think:

Would I be doing myself a disservice as a gamer if I got neither?

I like WoW alot, guild wars I couldn't really get into...

Neither is fine too, theres a plethora of free Mmo's on the web to sink your teeth into.

But as a WoW gamer, I recommend it ONLY to those who have the necissary self control to manage time wisely. Otherwise it is heavily addictive to those who get into the PvE end game content. But can be alot of fun as well!

This wasn't even a generalisation. ;3 I clearly said "some". I guess you feel attacked by it.

And even the remark about Jack Thomspon is really unrelated. ;3 Anyhow, maybe read what someone actually says in the future. ^^

For the record: I have nothing against people who play wow. ;3

I recently started playing Guild Wars, and I'm very happy with it. I wholeheartedly reccommend it to you, and not WoW. Screw that game. I don't understand anyone who willingly pays subscription fees, unless they have way too much money anyway.

I went with Guild Wars fairly recently, and here's why:

- no subscription fee
- all players are on the same "server"
- you can instant-travel to any large city you've already been to
- Decided that putting all of your skill points into Swordsmanship was a bad idea? Head back to the city and instantly put those points into something else.
- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEE

Although, Dungeons and Dragons Online is switching to a "free-to-play" system very soon, and since I'm in the beta for that, I can recommend it.

Hope this helps you out.

I highly suggest Guild Wars. I've played both games and Guild wars is just far more fun IF you are ok with making friends online and doing missions as a team. In WoW you can go for the majority of the game without any human interaction whatsoever and assuming you're in it for the multiplayer part of either MMO then I'd recommend Guild wars. If you're just looking for an RPG then I'd hold out for Borderlands or pick up Fallout 3.

I'd say WoW since Guild Wars is fairly short for being an MMO.

- NO SUBSCRIPTION FEE
- No subscription fee means much worse customer service, when I had a serious problem on Guild Wars it took me days to have it sorted out, on WoW it took half an hour.
- This lack of servers fragments the community, on WoW you are put into a relatively small community within the wider community. You still actually interact with other servers in the places it matters (PvP) but theres a much more homely feel about the average WoW server than there is in Guild Wars' homogenous mass. Indeed, the instanced nature of Guild Wars' world can make it very lonely, especially for those in small social guilds made up of them and their friends.
- This can be dones in WoW, albeit for a (nominal) fee. Given how ludicrously easy it is to make money on WoW nowadays the fee is barely worth mentioning.
- Guild Wars' PvE (Killing bosses) is a joke, WoW's PvE is ever more accessible to everyone and incredibly polished.
- As awful as some members of the WoW community are, the Guild Wars community is significantly worse in several ways. Elitism is rampant making it even harder than normal for a new player to get into things. Pubbies tend to be either selfish, brash and rude or silent and insualar.
- WoW has a well structured trading system. Do not doubt the amazing advantage its well implemented auction house gives it once you get into the game. Guild Wars wheeler dealers have to use the game's spam filled and highly Jargonized Trade Chat.
- As a person on a low budget WoW's subscription fee model gives me hours of decent quality entertainment every month for a fraction of the price of single player games.

I have to go with wow.
I played gw pretty intensely for about a year after it was released and have played wow on and off for the last few years, ie to complete the new expansions. i enjoy both the rpg/lore stuff and the socialising and pvp. i have to say wow is just so much more polished, i pay £8.99 each month and get a game worth playing for that whole month, whereas i bought trine for £20 yesterday afternoon and completed it in the evening, and it was crap. Wow constantly provides a game far better designed than pretty much any other released in a month but costs barely anything, thats why i play it.
plus on wow you can jump :p

I like Guild Wars more for many of the reasons already mentioned, but also because of the variety in the setting. There's the standard medieveal european setting, the asian setting, the mediterranian setting, and the scandinavian setting. All in all, it's like 4 games in one, each with a different and unique feel.

I have not played WoW myself, but it seems to be one big long endless same-fest.

Also, despite Guild Wars being a more finite game and having a lower level cap, I think this actually makes the game more fun sometimes. You can focus on getting cooler looking armor or better weapons, levelling up your hero companions, finish the story properly, or do the side stuff with some buddies rather than trying to grind your life away just to survive.

To surmise, the gameplay itself is just more fun.

As for doing yourself a disservice by getting neither, I'd say neither game is something a gamer couldn't live without. You won't be missing out on life by skipping both.

Nowhere in guild wars is there a giant forest of blue mushrooms inhabited my the fungus folk who are at war with the fungal giants, who have been displaced by the fish people. Nor is there the steampunk city of the eccentric gnomish race. The crystaline spelljammer starships of the enigmatic cristmastree-light people. The collapsing empire of the vaguely aztec Ice Trolls, the collapsed empire of the vaguely aztec Ice Trolls. The Moss Eisleyesque Goblin trade city of Gadgetzan. The Stone Summit have nothing on the Blackforge Clan. That's just scratching the surface of the variety...

WoW is easily one the the most diverse settings for any game about, theres just so many diferant settings.
