I always prefered guild wars. It felt like less grinding (top stat weapons with plain skins were very common, as was top stat armour), WoW just, I don't know really, I just dislike it.

I play Guild Wars and I stand obstinantly against WoW. For many reasons which I will list off now:

1) Guild Wars is free. It costs about $50 to pick up, but it's worth it.
2) The gameplay is awesome, as long as you have a friend to play with(It is an MMO). Solo can get a little dull unless you're into the grind.
3) You can make friends on GW, unlike WoW that sucks people in and steals their souls. Seriously, I had friends, then they got WoW, and I never saw them again. They worked, and then they played WoW. That's all they did.

I'm having a really tough time figuring out which to buy. Guild Wars has graphics and story, but a level cap of 20. WoW has a level cap of 70, but all of the quests amount to just killing things. Also, Guild Wars has no subscription fee, which might end up being the deal breaker for me.

Does anyone have anything else to add? I urge you to try to pitch the games to me, but this might be asking a bit too much.

NO FLAMING/TROLLING. Also, I'm sorry if this thread has been done before.
I have played both (and piles of other mmorpg's way b4 trying either, so i dont get effected with the "i played this one first so its better") and it depends on what sort of gamer you are really.

Everyone says guildwars is short and only a level 20 level cap, but if you look at it in a different light, the fact he cap is only 20 means you dont spend al your time grinding and trying to get a top level character to do all the end game stuff. Also means you can trial all the different variety of characters you can make and get them at a good potential easily.

as a PVE game WoW is better than guildwars, it offers more in that respect, mainly because of such a higher level cap you need to play more of the PVE in general. People tend to get bored of guildwars because they are more about the PVE and dont really get involved in the PVP side of things.

but as a PVP guildwars wins hands down and if you find yourself a good local (close to you) guild, it makes the game so much fun.

I play guildwars because I love the PVP, ive never had so much fun in a mmo than I did the first time I played an alliance battle. but the key is finding a good guild, with people you get along with. Also the fact you can make straight pvp characters at level 20 is great idea. Also the game is alot more blanaced pvp wise than wow, espically with the fact that you make combo classes, so each classes weaknesses can be fixed witht eh right 2ndary class.

I think the key to both games is finding good guilds, you need a good guild for raids (or atleast to make them fun) in WoW the same as you need a good guild for PVP in guildwars.

if you really want to go for an MMO, go for something newer. WoW and GW have been around for awhile.
maybe try Aion when it comes out

I played WoW for a year now, and Guild Wars for about a month. I started Guild Wars because i was trying to make an objective decision as to which was better. (before i start this please keep in mind that i got INCREDIBLY bored of GW and couldn't force my self any further than level 11, so i'll take everyone's word on the endgame content)

WoW: Benefits
1. Social
2. Cheaper than seeing a 2h movie every night
3. PvE is ultimately Supreme
4. Dungeons/Raids
5. Mounts (i know, its SO obvious)
6. Extreme DIVERSITY
7. Questing areas aren't instanced, so if you see someone killing the same things as you, you can group.
8. You can jump. Also, you aren't forced to follow a path, as you can jump off a ledge (careful)
9. Addons. Lots and lots of addons.
10. The User Interface (buttons, menu, chat, minimap, etc.) is very detailed and easy to access.

Disadvantages:
1. Crap graphics
2. Might have to ignore trade chat in cities (spam. macros make it easy to do that)
3. $15 a month actually doesn't seem expensive in perspective to other kinds of entertainment, but its more expensive than GW.
4. Very very very addicting
5. Certain level brackets can be very hard to level through.

GW: Benefits
1. PvP SUPREME
2. no one to steal your kills
3. armor doesn't break
4. All-character bank
5. Cheap. $40
5. Graphics are great
6. You "aggro" circle is clearly shown on the minimap
7. Not goona glitch yourself and get stuck. ( /sigh. u can't jump if you do anyways)
8. City -> City teleporting
9. Doesn't matter what server you are on, as you can switch at ANY given time.

Disadvantages (was running out of benefits):
1. Can't go anywhere unless you follow a windy and monster-uinfested path
2. The user interface is VERY dull
3. You can't tell what server your friends are on unless they tell you. also you can't see WHERE they are. (/who in WoW)
4. I don't know if this happens to other people, but i felt very alienated when playing Guild Wars.
5. Hard to continue if you aren't addicted, but that goes for both games.
6. All enemies are in instances. Kinda sucks in IMO

Ok, those are my facts about both games. obviously, i'll go for WoW any day.

Please do correct me if i am wrong about either game.
These are FACTS, not opinions. You cannot discount them, you can only add to them.
Also, i'm sure quite a few people are going to make a list like mine then fill it with their OPINIONS of both games, but i suppose theres no way to stop that.

*Edit* Woot! i beat the long winded person in long windedyness!
also, WoW's new expension next year should make leveling a LOT more fun

I've played both thoroughly and I can say, with complete confidence, WoW. Guild Wars isn't really as social because you can't randomly encounter people out on your adventures, you have to go to a settlement and group up with people before leaving in order to adventure with them. If you can afford it, go for WoW, I think you'll love it.

First of all, im surprised at how mature this thread is, but anyway on with the point.
ive played Guild Wars for 3 years, i think i played WoW for 3 days, so obviously im not that informed about WoW but ill tell you that it didnt hit it off for me for the short time i was playing it (been told it get's much better after level 20)But i can easily say Guild Wars is one of the best games ive ever played, out of any console or generation. So why not buy it? its cheap and theirs no subscription fees and it doesnt require a PC that pisses radioactive liquid to play it.

Also if you havnt already, try the free WoW trial, thats what i did.

WoWs higher level cap just means you have to grind that much mroe to get to the good content.

I have both games, but haven't played guild wars for several years and haven't played wow since BC.

I prefer Guild Wars... but Most guild wars fans do not consider guild wars an MMO, an MOG, but not an MMO. I'd still call it an MMO because all towns are hubs for everyone, and there are a *LOT* of towns. I for one, actually really like instanced maps in that game. I don't have to deal with people taking spawns or crap like that. As for the social aspect, in a game called "Guild" Wars, you can guess where you get the most social interaction in the game, and there are TONS of them, in most towns you will find tons of guilds advertising themselves, so you always have very easy social options.

Also, the PvP is second-to-none, at least in my opinion. Best small team MMORPG pvp, with a large strategic layer and high skill requirements. With a low level cap and not very much special gear, the only thing that separates players... is the skill between them.

Just my opinion.

Having sunk days into both games id say if your looking for a quick to finish MMO get guild wars, if your looking for something that will last get WoW. But anyway i say WoW theres just alot more to do than on GW, yeah you pay to play but WoW lasts a good while. Where as GW you can get to the lvl cap in a weekend =/. WoW has better gameplay IMO and PvP for that matter, majority of guilds on GW are social and dont really do the whole guild vs guild thing that much X_X.

So in short. get WoW ^__^

I've never played GW but having played wow for so long as a expensive messaging system because my friends won't kick the habit I say go GW. I mean you first buy retail wow for 19.99 or something prolly higher. Then you gotta pay the 34.99 for two months of play and then a 34.99 expansion and a 49.99 expansion. Before you know it all your money is going into one game that is way to based on time spent vs actual skill. my prices may be off by 10 or so bucks but I mean damn 6 time cards a year at 34.99 cnd do the math.

I actually think that WoW is cheaper than most other forms of entertainment, like eating out or movies. Think $2 a movie/night or resteraunt/night (my prices are way too low already)

30 days in a month. 2x30=60. $60 a month for a 2h movie or 30 minute meal each night. it's 1/4 the price and the same time (or more if you have time) to play WoW. Plus, WoW is much more fun than a movie IMO. and you can play it as much as you want.

I've played for a year. $14 a month. 14x12=$168 plus $70 in expansions. $238 and i think it has been worth every penny.

Guild Wars is, in fact, cheaper, as there is no monthly fee, but WoW is a better game overall.

So yes. it DOES depend on your economic status.

**EDIT** And YES!! i am SO glad that this thread is as mature as it is. More information presented than flaming =)

WoW really is an amazing game. If you're strapped for cash and can only spend $15 on gaming every month, go with WoW. There is so much to do and see. It's crazy.

I used to try and justify it to myself but I just had to toss those ideas right out the window because I'm just not the kind of person who finds fun in doing what is basically work. I will never be as "good" as the players who play 14 hours a day, Those who try and glean fun at my expense at how much I suck for being a level 66, while the story passes me by as I have no time to read through the quest boxes ,it if I am ever to catch up to the people who wanted me to play with them.

I need my games to have skill and that all gets washed out by people who's sick idea of fun is running the same 3 hour instances back to back trying to get an item with a .2% drop rate that they can then hold over the heads of everyone else until a new level of tier gear is released on a daily basis.I'm not saying it doesn't take skill to play in theory it's just gear makes up such a major part.( could you imagine if someone got "gear checked" in cod, sorry your perk set and weapon isn't good enough go away"

That all kind of mixed with how every couple of patches they make the game easier. There's no point in playing constantly I could just let my account idle for 8 months and come back with rested xp for the next 4 levels and be able to buy what took others thousands of gold for like 15g.
