Perhaps being able to change your Gamertag for free, rather than charging 800MSP for it?
Congradulations sir, you have made about the only con-xbox statement I agree with thus far.

Despite it's pitfalls, PSN is free. And with free games for the downtime, you can't really be too angry at Sony anymore. Then there's Steam, the biggest gaming network for PC gaming. There's something in common here: they're both free. And the Wii, despite your reserves is the exact same.
There's a few flaws that I percieve just within this paragraph. Now this is just my perception of things, not like absolute fact but here it goes.

First, the fact that Xbox Live lacks those pitfalls is something that in my opinion justifies the cost entirely. 60$ US is not a large amount of money, and Xbox Live is a better service than PSN. I understand that some people would rather have it free (because even though Xbox Live is better, PSN is still damn good and the difference isn't dramatic) but I'm content with the quite frankly negligable fee.

Second, the fact that other services are free doesn't nessisarily mean that free is or should be the standard. PSN is free but the slightly lesser quality of the service and (as the recent hack indicates) slightly lesser levels of security compensate for the fact. At this time I'd like to point out my use of the word slightly. Though slightly worse PSN still offers a very high level of service and I'm in no way trying to say that PSN is bad. Continuing the point, Steam is part of a much more competative and diverse market. Everyone (Just about) who owns a PC has internet access, unlike Xbox or PS3. There are also many other ways of aquiring and playing games online that are not Steam. Being free is just Steam's way of staying competative. Lastly, Wii Connect 24 is shit. Enough said.

Lastly, free games for the downtime may be enough for some, but it certainly isn't for many others. My trust in Sony has been shaken, and I certainly won't be as quick to give them personal or credit card info any time soon. The free game is a nice "Sorry, here's a cookie" type thing, but the simple fact is that they fucked up big time and the free game and PS Plus time is a token. A well appreciated token mind you, but a token nonetheless. I doubt it does any of the thousands who's credit card data was sold on the black market any good.

My point seems to have digressed in the comments. My argument wasn't that because of PSN going down, we should be compensated, I now realise the PSN involvement was merely coincidence. It's simply that I don't believe that £40/year justifies the benefits we get.

DLCs are still in a few cases more expensive that retail purchases or GOTY editions and the competitions aren't exactly warranting a great deal. I admit that Xbox Rewards is a good idea and if used to its full potential could be what's missing.

I just don't feel like the £120 I've spent on XBL Gold has really got me anywhere.

Hey I don't mind too much, but I wouldn't object to a little drop in the Gold subscription cost...

Where are your sources? You comment that XBL owners are feeling cheated due to PSN users getting free games, but you give us nothing to back up that fact. Any Xbox users who feel cheated over the fact Sony is giving its users free games as a bribe to forget the fact it loss all our personal data really needs to look at themselves in the mirror.

Besides, have you actually looked at the games Sony is offering and the reaction towards them? I'd say easily more than half the responses here have been that the list is bad because they're games people already have, or wouldn't want in the first place. Take a look at the list of games offered: pretty much all of them are games the "core market" is likely to already own/have played through. Sony isn't likely going to lose a lot from offering these games for free (in fact they may make money out of it considering a few of the games have other titles in the series already out or in the works).

I errrm uhhh...fish?

I'm sorry, I don't get it. It's like a pair of kids with different parents. One of them goes through a hard time, so he gets a toy. The other one immediately wants one just because. I don't see the point of this reward thing. The only thing I can say is making XBL is at least a nice gesture.

People go on about credit card info being stolen, bu I would have lost much more money paying for xbox live then with whatever hackers are doing with my info, so as far as I'm concerned xbl gold users have lost more than me
Yeah but the difference is XBL Gold users are WILLINGLY paying for a service they CHOOSE to use. Anyone who gets their money stolen from them by the hackers is not CHOOSING to have their money taken and isn't getting anything in return. Are you being serious with your post?

The point is people who pay for XBL Gold are choosing to do so, but PSN users did not choose to have their information stolen.

What I really resent is the fact that they often put a price on DLC that is otherwise free.
I'm looking at YOU L4D DLC...

Well, as an Xbox Live owner/subscriber, I'm glad that my online gaming service was not down for the past few weeks and that my personal information was not at any risk. lol

Actually I wont get a gold account due to the issues with the system. Why should I have to pay to use the services and also have to pay for DLC that I cannot download unless I have a gold account as well...then again im a bit of a linux fanboy as well and only play on friends 360's not liking giving monies to the corperation that really puts a vice on free software but thats another rant altogether there.
lolwut?

Gold is only for online multiplayer. A free silver account lets you use the marketplace.

EDUMACASHUN. It's important.
