Ive been smoking since i was 14, and to be honest ive never had any hassle from randomers telling me to put it out. I think this is more of an american issue, and probably abit in the south of england, but here in the north it just seems like no one gives a shit. im pretty sure the usual attitude is "shut up and get on with it" as with many things in england. "whats that? the government are increasing tax again!? those bastards! ...right back to work."
and yeah, the preaching is annoying, but that can be fixed with a nice, long, slow puff of lamburt and butler in the face.

I don't smoke but my mother used to. I could care less if a stranger's smoking since it's their choice, I only ever pushed my Mom to quit simply because I'd like to keep her around as long as possible and she's been trying to quit on and off for years.

I am i smoker and its funny when people tell me that its unhealthy. For example a real life convo i had the other day. Nonsmoking douche:"Hey dont you know how bad those are for you?" Myself:"Oh....i like eggs..." Nonsmoking douche:"excuse me?" Myself:"I thought we were stating random facts that dont matter?"

I don't mind people being ostracised for smoking. What I do mind, is people not being ostracised for being fat. While there is a small population who have physical health problems, the vast majority* are overweight because of lifestyle. What?s the difference?

*I have no source for this made up internetz statistic.

I personally hate smoking, not the people who do it. The habbit itself bothers me, but I usually don't have issues with people who do.

I answered "Not Cigarettes *winkyface*" because I smoke cigars, in fact I run a specialist cigar store. In my job I have had to deal with some of the worst of the preachy asshats out there. I remember one particular instance where a woman went out of her way to come in to my store to reprimand me for "selling death, like the devil". I kid you not.
I hate being villanised for what I enjoy but 75% of the time it is a lack of understanding that drives this.
That and, being a cigar smoker, I don't really walk around smoking or nip out in to the street for a smoke so when I am smoking it is usually around people who appreciate it.

And for the record I think cigarettes are vile. But it's their choice.
I wish more people smoked cigars instaed of cigarettes. Hadn't come across cigars until last month, when I ended up drinking with a cigar smoker. I was really suprised, the smoke didn't smell like chemical ass.

I've yet to see anyone give a shit in the south either.
I find it a bit annoying when in in the pub with a large group smoking cigarettes, because they smell awful, and occasionally there's enough for my lungs to feel like crap. But I don't make an issue of it and have another beer.

One thing I don't get is how students can afford to smoke. I bought a pack for my mate a while ago, Jesus Christ, I couldn't afford that habit even if I wanted to.

It's your choice. I don't see the problem besides Second Hand smoke. And people can move away from the smoker if they need to.

The other day I was having a smoke and a small child (who never got anywhere near close enough to me to breathe in any secondhand smoke) felt entitled to look over at me and begin melodramatically gagging coughing and so on.
I occasionally get the same thing from random smart-arses, OP. A (jovial) response that works well for me is: "Bloody hell mate, with a cough like that it's a good thing you don't smoke!" If they wanna take the piss out of you, take the piss out of them.

But I don't generally feel alienated by the people in the community for being a smoker - the smoking ban hits pretty close to the mark but that only really bites in winter. Unfortunately it's winter now and I'm not looking forward to spending half my evenings for the next few months stood outside in the driving wind and snow.

2nd hand smoke puts me in a hell of a coughing fit.

I don't mind the smell though. Reminds me of casinos in Vegas. But if there's a lot of smoke in the air it's irritating as fuck.

i have the opposite problem, ive had cigars on quite afew occasions, the smell is alright but i kept trying to smoke them like you would a cig and the end result was a massive feeling of nausea and stomache ache... probably my fault though anyway.

Oh boy, it must be hard living in the US, since everyone is so preachy and feels entitled to make you accept his opinion on a matter. Good thing I don't live there. In Greece no one has ever commented on my smoking. Too bad for you then *trollace*

In all seriousness, I have never been criticized for my smoking therefore I can't really have a say in this matter. I do believe however that one should not be judged for his choice of lifestyle, even if it is fatal.

Apparently this takes too much energy to do, so instead people complain the shit out of themselves about it.

I totally don't get smoking, people pay money (and lots of it) to pump carcinogens into their lungs for 5 minutes at a time for 10 times a day. You are literally paying money to kill yourself.
Same could be said for a lot of activities, but honestly I don't think the trade of a hand full of stress relief for a few seconds of lifespan a pop is really a hard thing to understand from a trade standpoint, though a bit of a raw deal, it is understandable.

I don't smoke, and I have negative one intentions to start.

If people smoke, it's their choice - but please don't do it near me, or expect me to talk to you just after you've been smoking. Really hate the smell.

It has nothing to do with a healthy lifestyle OP. It has to do with over a decade of anti-smoking campaigns aimed at younger kids. The whole idea behind them was a to create a culture that abhors smoking, so they never pick up on it. You know what? It's working.

They are, except instead of spouting words we just destroy their self esteem with imagery.
