I´m a non-smoker and i usually am non-vocal about it, except if i feel affected by the smoke. Being preacher-y is not good. Let people do what they want, they´re adults.

I don't mind smoking, though my lungs can't handle being near smoke (from cigarettes). About the kid, don't expect a child to behave like and adult (ought to).

I chose the third option, which leads to a whole diferent kind of disaproval. I'm sad that people react the way they do to the OP, but on the other hand I do think that cigarettes are an unpleasent habit. However, I wouldn't go as far as mockery, or trying to influence someone else's life choices

I grew up in Indonesia so I buy kretek when I get homesick and smoke only once or twice a week so the health and monetary effects are mostly negligible.

Yeah I smoke. Only people who tell me it's bad are my grandparents really.
As for other people, yeah you get dirty looks but being British you get the whole look but don't act attitude here thank god.
As for children, learn to blow smoke rings, they'll be too fascinated to complain :)

You smell bad
Your teeth are yellow
Your skin is grey
You Smell REALLY bad
I am forever cleaning up discarded fag ends
Discarded lit fags start fires
I am forever putting out discarded lit fags
You make wherever you go smell really bad
You make stains up the walls and on the ceilings of anywhere you go
Smokers seem to put smoking ahead of simple personal safety, I run a petrol station yet I have to tell people not to light up every, damn, day.
Did I menion how bad you all smell?

I don't like smoking, I don't hate it enough to go around preaching at people, it's your body after all. But all the same smokers cause problems for non smokers wherever they go, not least the smell, which they swear blind is some kind of myth, the same way a fat guy swears his weight is a glandular problem and nothing to do with that Big Mac he's cramming in his mouth.

PS, sorry, it's been a slow day today.

I don't smoke and the only time I really take any issue with someone else smoking is if they do it near me.
With asthma you might as well just grab my throat and strangle me yourself.

i don't smoke cigarettes but i do occasionally (as in... once every few months) smoke a cigar or light up my pipe... mainly just to be able to say "hey, i smoke a pipe!"... i know they taste horrible but it's an interesting tactile sensation that you can't really get anywhere else...

plus i do see the societal value of the "smoke break", so there's that

Keep them away from me, and I don't care. Once they're near me, then I start to take issue.

I don't really mind. I don't smoke but a large portion of my family do or used to smoke so it doesn't really bother me. As long as they follow the rules, I do get pissed off if someone sits down near me in the bus shelter and lights up though.. because you're meant to keep it away from others. It does affect people who come from families that don't smoke a lot lot more though. At home when my mum would smoke in a fairly warm room it'd really iritate me; and by that I mean it irritates my skin, making me itchy... I'm guessing this isn't an issue now for restaraunts and stuff because of the smoking ban.

People have a right to be pissed off if it is making them react in some way. If you have a cold (like a tickly cough), asthma especially, or even just come from a family that don't really smoke.. then your smoking can easily set them off coughing, it's not them being a douche.

I will never smoke. I just hold my breath when I start to smell it or see a smoker walking past me.
Although my asthmatic friend will cough on purpose, and I will join her if I'm there. You think it doesn't do other people harm? Wait until you've seen someone get a asthma attack triggered by it and then you'll see why others hate it.

Technically I smoke 'cigarillos', mostly because I can't smoke a legitimate cigar on a 10 minute break. I think cigarettes are pretty vile as well.
Cigarillos rock. I want to buy a poncho and a cowboy hat so I can really do them justice. But I have no idea where to get them :(.

What you have here is an issue with assholes and idiots, not smokers.

I hate this banning bullshit that is going on. I don't smoke cigarettes, I smoke cigars and it's effin tough to find anywhere to smoke unless a friend has a house (I live in a cold northern snow-filled location). I've been walking home from college and people will look at me funny because I'm still on school grounds while I'm walking away with a cigar lit. And heaven forbid non-smokers can't go to EVERY tavern in town without experiencing second hand smoke.

Lastly, it's my lifestyle choice, I'm not influencing anyone to do it too, and I'm not blowing it in your face so deal with it.

Both sides have normal people and extremists, as long as you don't be an ass and smoke in the face of random people, it shouldn't honestly bother anyone. However some people are so against smoking they outright annoy smokers about it, and that's not right either.

I've smoked on and off for years, am currently "off" (damn Blue state taxes), and have found that it's common to be lectured by people, or have people fake-cough if I'm smoking somewhere, like outside a store. Before I lost weight recently, I also had to deal with being fat, the last type of person that can be made fun of, it seems. Funny how the health kick people don't seem to care about anything unless it offends one of their senses. One might almost wonder if the whole thing's not just some shallow exercise in bull shittery, and not actually about actually being physically fit.

Vegans (every damn one I know happens to also be a health nut) are the worst people in the world to be around if you're a chubby smoker. You will hear nothing but grunts and groans as you smoke, then be lectured on how morally filthy you are (almost as filthy as your lungs!) for eating meat, and that that's why you're so fat. You know, not because they eat one carrot a day, and run 27 miles afterwards. Guess I'd rather have quality of life over quantity, especially since we're all just gonna die anyway, and a few years difference doesn't matter much.

Of course, now I'm in decent shape and don't smoke, so maybe it's time I started being a douche and bitching out people for their lifestyles, you know, unless they're gay.

I (mostly) only smoke when I drink. And sometimes the leftovers the next day. Marlboro red is my cup of tea. Or, uh... Pack of cigarettes.

This. I don't smoke often but on the right occasion I can really go for a good cigar.

The other day I was having a smoke and a small child (who never got anywhere near close enough to me to breathe in any secondhand smoke) felt entitled to look over at me and begin melodramatically gagging coughing and so on. Now personally, I find this very offensive; I'm being made fun of and alienated for a lifestyle choice.

The question here is, what is so wrong with people who smoke? These days, because of the whole healthy lifestyle kick, it seems that this in particular is being villainized.

As though smoking automatically makes you some sort of second rate lowlife. Not to mention the preaching. I KNOW IT'S BAD FOR ME, LEAVE ME ALONE.

If you're a smoker - How do you feel about the way we're treated? Do you notice at all?

If you're not - How do you feel about it? Do you go out of your way to express your opinion on the subject?
As I said in a similar thread, I think that cigarettes should not be allowed to be sold. None the less, I would still appreciate it if people smoking near me would kindly take it down wind. You chose to smoke and get cancer from it, I did not. I do not want other people's second hand smoke giving me cancer.

This. The smell kinda gives me a headache.

I usually stand upwind of the smoke when talking to my friends who smoke. That way it doesn't blow towards me, and they can still smoke (I'm not one of those idiots who say "YOU CAN'T SMOKE AROUND ME!". I just move).
