This or an SMG (I have a fondness for MP5s in counter-strike. MP5s and Deagles). If it is a post-apocalyptic wasteland then typically you have two obstacles. Creatures that caused the apocalypse, and survivors competing for resources. For survivors, you'd need something with both power and accuracy (or something with minimal recoil and lots of bullets to make up for my lack of accuracy) to defend yourself (and a decent range unless they only have knives). For apocalypse-creatures you would need either need something long range or something short range (depending on how fast they move, how large they are, what threat they pose at varying ranges, etc) and also decent fire rate (it's an apocalypse, it is either one huge enemy in which case infrequent pot-shots won't do shit, or it is a horde of enemies, and if you don't have a decent fire rate, you won't be able to kill them faster than they can move at you).
SMGs and combat rifles have decent power, decent fire rate, and decent accuracy, making it a high utility weapon (and in a survival situation, you need to be able to adapt).
