Shotgun, it's good over mid range, and serviceable at close range. Reload is a *****, but the spray makes up for that in my books. Gotta be practical

For me, the Light Machine Gun, every time.
Specifically the FN Minimi Para, with folding buttstock, collapsable bipod, and M16 magazine feed.

The weapon is versatile enough to cope with almost any post apocalyptic situation, and while it might not be as accurate as a sniper rifle over longer distances, it still has the range to punch a grapefruit-sized hole through a target at a great enough distance that they would be no threat to me. Threat pproaching at long range? LMG. Multiple enemies approaching at speed? LMG. Vehicle attacking? LMG. Area suppression or denial? LMG. Close Quarters? Saw them in half with an LMG. Admittedly, there are guns which can perform each of the above tasks more effectively, but the LMG can perform ALL of the tasks equally well, and with a larger magazine than the combat rifle, reloads are less frequent. The adjustable stock means it can be compacted for ease of storage, transport or when entering tight spaces, the bipod can provide extra stability when manning a defensible position, and the magazine over the belt means you still have one hand free to steady the weapon, and don't have to worry about it snagging or trailing in dirt.

Scenario: You're sleeping in a bed you found, when a noise wakes you. Someone with a knife is literally five feet away.

Rocket Launcher - you'd be stabbed, or have to run away, leaving it behind, in which case the sadist with the knife might pick it up and shoot you.

Minigun - kthxbai

Scenario: You get back to your safe house when you notice a couple of guys taking all your stuff.

Rocket Launcher - if you shoot them, you'd blow up your whole house. Thus defeating the point of keeping them from stealing your stuff.

Minigun - LEETLE BEBBIE MAN!
What? A minigun would have to spin up and it's not something you can grab and use in 2 seconds, you would be better off with your bare hands.

Shotgun, decent range and powerful enough to take down anything with a carefully timed/placed shot.

Shotgun. When you say "post-apocalyptic" I hear "Fallout", specifically "Fallout 3". The combat shotgun in that game is far and away the best non-energy weapon in the game. I once took down a rampaging Deathclaw with nothing but the combat shotgun (and a lot of circle strafing, of course.)

Combat rifle, the Lee Enfield, in the absence of being able to select a sniper rifle.

Nothing beats taking down assailants from long range. Or assaulting a location completely out of harm's way.

Since ammunition isn't an issue I can have plenty of practice before taking it into town.

I picked combat rifle because it's the only rifle available, but then someone pointed out that they could pick a shotgun with buckshot shells and slugs. I hadn't thought of that.

If there's both I'd change it to shotgun.

LMG, has great range, tons of power to take down anything you'd probably face. Close range, well put bullets in the body chargin' at you like any weapon. Or just blast it through a wall.

Only problem is the reload time, but if your careful you'd have no one near you while you reload.

The rifle I'm no gun expert but I always seem to prefer them in such games.

I will tend to prefer the Sniper rifle really butI don't see them on your list.

Combat Rifle. It's a pretty good all round weapon. Good range, good damage, robust, and if they get too close I can just twat them one with the butt of the rifle.
Thank you, I've now been saved explaining why I'd pick a rifle!

I would go with the rocket launcher.

Why?

Well, I would have said combat rifle but I hate cleaning them. Absolutely HATE cleaning them. The M16's star chamber is the bane of my existence. You just can't get the carbon out of there and eventually that's going to lead you to a situation where your weapon doesn't work when you need it most.

I don't anticipate having to use the rocket launcher. Thus, I don't anticipate having to clean it. Worst case scenario, I'd fire it once, drop it there and walk away. In my post apocalyptic world, I anticipate much less killing than the rest of you. I'd make a fruit farm in a warm climate and trap animals. But if you try anything on my farm... you're gonna get a rocket in your face.

Edit: Also, note my profile pic. That's me, holding my damned M16, covered in mud. Took me 3 hours to clean it that day and I was ridiculously careful not to get it dirty.

Combat rifle, all the way. Easy to use, accurate, great range, and I have training (relative term!) with them. Also, with the amount of potential modifications (scope, bayonet, silencer), the gun could perform many different roles effectively.

I've got crazy good aim from years in the swamps hunting deer and bear with my dad.

Yes, the swamps.

So, probably the combat rifle - I think I'd make a pro sniper.
Why does my childhood always come off sounding like I was raised by mud people?

Well, if we get to choose the make of the guns, and ammo is no worry, then the answer is quite simple. The AA-12 auto shotgun. It is nigh unjammable, needs very little cleaning and care, and has an amazing assortment of available ammo types. Buck shot, bird shot, slugs, discarding sabot, and my persona favorites, micro grenades! Something for every situation.

Combat Rifle, preferably an FN FAL or M14. Something accurate at long ranges with enough stopping power to drop mutants, while still being useful in close combat.
