Portal 1 had the (now irritatingly ubiquitous) cake. Seriously, if I see "x? the x is a LIE!" one more time, I'm going to snap. However, Portal 2 has the funnier, (arguably) less deranged Spaaace! Which is now doing the internet rounds. So, Escapists, which do you reckon is better?

well, portal 2 is no doubt a funnier game, however I've grown fond of cake. And to be honest, I never found "spaaace" funny. I choose Wheatley, he is ten times funnier than the space core. How come "that's er, that's [X], quoting [X] there," "I AM NOT A MORON" or any other of wheatley's quotes are less popular than space core's?

And GLaDOS had awesome lines! "Oh, Hi, so how are you holding up? BECAUSE I'M A POTATO!" That made be laugh like hell! More than "SPAACE" ever did. How did one word get more attention than every joke in the game?

Oh and "Combustable Lemons," that is awesome! I only wish I heard it on my first play through as my speakers were broke and they were quieter then usual, so I heard more GLaDOS than Cave.

EDIT: Sorry for the rant, BTW, I don't HATE space, it's just not that funny.

To be honest, the whole "The ****[footnote]Censored due to me not wanting to get punched in the face by every person that lives on the planet...ten times over.[/footnote] is a Lie!" gag wasn't really funny. "Spaaaace!", on the other hand, is actually humorous. Although, to be 100% honest, I choose the explosive lemons.

Uhm... Don't you think it's a little hypocritical to be calling the "the cake is a lie" line irritating, but find people leaning on the "a" button in "Spaaaaaaace!" absolutely fine?
Anyway, neither quotes really have anything going for them as far as I'm concerned. I picked space, just because it's narrated and therefore more memorable. But I think Portal has some way better quotes. Not mentioning the end songs, I find "you monster", the best representation of GLaDOS still trying to apply human empathy, even though she has no idea what she's talking about.

Portal 2 is funnier due to the prevalence of the black humour, and the continuous fights between Wheatley and GLADoS. Best one being Wheatley trying to insult Chell and Glados calling him out on it,

I agree. If we're going purely for meme's here, I think combustible lemons should have been the big new one, not space.

That being said, out of Cake or Space, I knew about the Cake being a Lie long before I ever knew what the reference was from, whereas the core obsessed with space came out of left field and almost made me fall over laughing during the game.

Always thought they were both fine quotes. Quickly gets old because most people are not that funny. Find something humorous, then beat it into the ground because its easier than thinking of your own material. Most people are boring as shit, their idea of humor is to just copy other things that they have seen. So many people at my work that fit this criteria, ever listen to a 40 year old man talk about how he spent his weekend mowing his lawn, (getting sleepy)

"You monster" is from Portal 2. XD But yeah, when I say Portal is mean the series in general, not one specific game.
Although for the sake of argument, Portal 1 had plenty of black humour. Even blacker as far as I'm concerned, since Portal 2 seems to me to be more light-hearted about it. Also, might I point out I said "better quotes". That doesn't necessarily mean they have to be funnier.
As for which actually has the funniest, that's more of a matter of opinion.

My personal situation is actually quite different than most peoples', because I didn't play Portal until about two months before Portal 2 came out. But, as anyone who has been on the internet for longer than a day could probably say, it's fairly close to impossible to avoid a large meme for 3-4 years (especially when WoW has an achievement called "The Cake is a Lie"). I didn't even know the quote was from Portal until last year.

So when I finally played the game and saw that written on the walls I was like "Haha, now I've actually seen it." In the end, I think Classic Portal was more subtle and dark about its humor, whereas Portal 2 decided to go for lighthearted and slapstick writing.
