I would take it, unless I would be taped on camera, could use the money to pay the bills.

I think the speed at which I would grab that shit would lead to a whole new and exotic branch of physics, as my had would exceed c.

Seriously, i would take the money with no moral qualms, it's the responsibility of the ATM operator to make sure that the ATM is functioning correctly and they are liable for any faults not resulting from LINK or BACS systems.

However saying that, you know the old moral choice scenario 'You find a wallet on the floor containing a large amount of cash and no one is around, do you take the cash?' Well in that situation then i know exactly what i would do because it's happened to me. I handed it in to the police station. I was told that if no one came forward to claim it in 31 days then it would be mine. It turned out in the end that it belonged to an elderly gentleman who had withdrawn his pension to pay his bills. So ended up without the cash but up on karma points, which is always nice.

In real life I wouldn't take the money since I would get caught for sure.

In this guaranteed safe scenario I would take it happily.

No, somebody would potentially lose their job so I don't think I would, but then again my eviler side would just steal it all.

As many others have said, if it can't be traced to me, I'd snatch it up immediately. Especially if it was Bank of America. They put me through so much crap that I feel like I'm entitled to an accidental refund of a few hundred, or thousand, or hundred thousand dollars. It's not like that amount of money would have the slightest impact on their business. I'd hope that if it hurt anyone, it'd be some ridiculous overpaid CEO, but I wouldn't worry too much about it.

it really depends on the amount. Also depends on the location of the cash machine. If it was on the outside of my bank, and it started churning out thousands of quid I would probably go in and tell them. But, on the other hand, my bank earns a tonne of money off my savings so I would have no issue with keeping some (especially with these rediculous bankers bonus'(UK banks))

Yeah, I'd keep it.

I mean, afterall, the bank takes enough money off me in the form of bank fees.
This. They charge enough as it and bank charges are increasing. I see taking this atm money as fine, the bank will just claim the loss from insurance anyway. :)

No, youd have to pay taxes on it, and then you have to justify how you get it. you can not pay taxes on it, but then (here at least) the IRS can stop by for an audit and say, gee, you suddenly seem to have a lot of money, where'd you get all that and then when they find out youre in trouble for theft and tax evasion.

and this is not mentioning the little camera in the ATM doesnt catch you (i'm assuming that's part of the no links ot the crime portion).

besides, I just couldnt in good conscious.

This is only the passive question, go for the active question!

Such as, "You find a wallet full of credit cards and you know the local appliance/electronics/grocery store has no cameras and the clerks don't try to verify card ownership. Do you go on an spending spree till the cards are rejected?"

If the answer to the active question and the passive question are not the same then you have the reflection of how principled people here are.
That's why I made the source of money a known but (somewhat) not liked source; I wanted to see how that would affect the answers of people.

Many in this very thread have stated that they would not IF they knew it came from another person. It coming from the big bad machine of banks seemed to have greatly shifted opinions (almost a 3 to 1 difference as of this post).

As usual, my answer proves me a morally-corrupt ass, but a cunning ass at that.

I'd scoop up say...$400 or so, enough to enjoy a luxury or two, and at the same time a small enough amount that it won't be missed in the growing pile of 20s in front of the machine. Then I'd tell the employees. I stop people from robbing the place completely blind, while at the same time directing suspicion away from myself. And the only entity that loses out is the bank itself, for which $400 is less than a rounding error.

I'm keeping it, as much as I can physically carry, regardless of any circumstances.

Nah, it's not mine, I might take a £100 if it spits out like all it's money, as payment for me being a lovely fellow but I wouldn't try and keep it all.

What deeper principle I am missing?

All I see from the responses here is "targetting certain groups you don't like makes a criminal act against them justified" and so many in these forums seem to be against even feeling certain ways about groups you don't agree with, much less criminal acts.

Depends on how much money would be spewing out. Assuming it's not from anybody's account I would have no problem taking up to $200, but then it would get a lot more finicky for me.

Nope. Doing that would be like claiming on car insurance when you weren't injured, other people would end up paying for, and being affected, by your theft.

Plus, I'm not desperate for money. Unless I was desperate for something to eat, there's no reason to resort to illegal actions.

I'd grab about hundred or so. Enough that if I get picked up by the police I'm not completely fuck. At max, 900. Anything over 999 is a felony.

most likely, but i wouldn't be making it obvious by stuffing my pockets with hundreds. after all the town has most likely got security cameras on every street corner and point of interest (i.e. anywhere handing out money).
