I think I would go with abort.. we can always try again. However both me and my girlfriend may have not been born at all if it was up to some parents so I don't really know what to think.

I'd abort. It would only drain both of us and society.

Yeah, that sounds evil and soul-less as all hell, but none the less...

Since I get to know about it early on in the pregnancy I would choose an abortion. I am only 16 and would not want any child at all at this time. I would probably go for an abortion even if I was older, because I don't view a two week old fetus as a proper life, and figure it might just be better to stop that lump of cells before it becomes a human.

This is a moral dilemma? I mean sure, for some of the 'pro-lifers' maybe, but the decision is otherwise pathetically easy. Let's do a pros and cons:

Pros of keeping it:
1.

Cons of keeping it:
1. Drain on you and your partner finacnially
2. Drain on you and your partner emotioally.
3. Drain onyou and your partner's time.
4. Drain on society.
5. Drain on the time, emotions and financials of whichever relative ends up with the child next.

Summary: Letting the child live has no benefits. Aborting the child avoids the destruction of the emotional and financial status of many people as well as avoiding the destruction of their potential futures (high paying jobs, vacations, awesome games, etc).

NOTE: I voted abort.

I completely agree, though some seem to view all children as "blessings", regardless of what the negative consequences and logic would dictate.

I'd wish to abort it.

I think that the woman should have the final choice, but hopefully she would see the reason.

There's just no point in a child like that existing. It wouldn't bring us any joy as a couple, it would be a drain on both our finances and those of the state, and it would probably be a short joyless existence for the child.

Abort the poor thing, and try again.

Abort it without a second thought. I may be a complete monster for thinking so, but I tend to regard such genetic mistakes as something less than human and have no compassion at all for them.

I personally think it would be cruel to the child to let him/her live like that for their entire life. Therefore, I'd probably try and persuade my girlfriend/wife/whatever to have an abortion. I would discuss it endlesly with her, of course, and not make the decision lightly, but it would be more unfair to the child if we knew he/she would have severe mental problems than it would be to either of us to have to raise them (which itself is something I probably couldn't handle). Don't get me wrong, if we had the child, whether we knew he/she would be mentally retarded or not, I'd make sure to raise my child with all the love and care and attention in the world, and make their life as easy and happy as possible. But I'd rather my hypothetical significant other have an abortion than put the child through such a terrible life.

I don't understand where this reasoning comes from. In most Western countries, the mentally handicapped don't live extremely shorter lives, about 10 years younger. That's skewed by mental retardation's co-morbidity with other diseases that shorten the lifespan. If the child had no other health complications, there's no reason to believe it wouldn't live in its 70s.

This is one of the very problems with raising such a handicapped person. As in Mice and Men, a fully grown adult with the mental age of a toddler can be very problematic.

I could never in good mind bring a child into the world only for it to not be able to experience a life.

More than that, it's all hard work for essentially nothing. Just prolonging the inevitable for someone that won't be able to really fully appreciate it.

I'm sorry to have worded it in such a cold and emotionless way, but that's just how it is for me =/

Definitely abortion, because of all of these reasons.
I don't have a problem with aborting a normal fetus, so I certainly would have no problem with this (not that it would be up to me anyways, as I am a male and lack a womb)

Ehhh....

I would be sorely tempted to abort it (as early as possible), but being a believer in God and the sanctity of life...Hm. The thing with giving it up for adoption is-would anyone even have her/him? I mean, when people look for a child to adopt, this is the LAST thing they're looking for. It is a heavy burden to raise such a child.

I guess I wouldn't know for sure until something like this actually happened.
