"Good day officer, I'd like to report a lost wallet with 30,000 dollars in it."

Edit: Second thoughts, that'd be a big wallet.

I'd go to the police with that. If it's drug money then I don't want to keep it since that might lead to some pretty bad consequences. If it's someone who simply lost it who's not a criminal then it wouldn't be right of me to take it.

There are too many loopholes and variables in this question (it's already been pointed out that that much cash just lying around could very well be drug money). The question should be:

If you could take 40 thousand dollars from some random person, without ever being caught, and have it just materialize in your bank account with no questions asked or anyone looking into it, would you take it?

I know it's much longer but I think a lot of people wouldn't take the money in your scenario but it wouldn't have anything to do with morality. In my scenario I wouldn't take the money. I don't really need it. I live a fairly cheap lifestyle and with my job I make enough to get by and pay for university. Once I'm finished school, I will get a job that pays fairly decently and all 40 thousand would do is get me a nicer car or a really great vacation. I do not need either of those. Sure I'd like them, but not enough to take the money from someone else.

I highly doubt the owners are going to track you down should you take it. Career criminals have more important things to do like not leaving bags of cash in places where "muggles" will find it.
i used to work with a guy who was an armed robber, post offices (which is just pants on head retarded)clubs and bars that sort of thing, from talking to him i got the impression that beng part of a society that cant phone the police having the reputation of being someone whose shit you do not take is quite important and anyone taking anything of yours would be dealt with in an extreme and example making manner.

and as i dont see that sort of person being talked out of sustained sexual violence by the line "i gave it to the cops man i swear" i think i would keep it and do a runner. ive been feeling like a change in town anyway.

I find forty-thousand dollars?

I spend forty-thousand dollars. On Skittles and a paddling pool.

Well...

In my current situation, I would keep it...

Only because I have virtually no money to myself ATM...

So, yeah... I'd keep it...

Deposit ~3-5k into the bank every 3-4 weeks saying they were "winnings" from the casino... (I'd even use a different branch to my bank if I was seriously that paranoid) And just spend cash for a lot of things...

So, yeah... I'm a bad person, but it was their fault for losing it in the first place?

Yeah, armed robbers are different to drug dealers. But good point, hyotetical drug dealers AND armed robbers should stop leaving their money out for the taking and people won't steal it.

If you fail to prepare, prepare to fail.

I'd return it because as other people have said, 40k in cash isn't something an entirely legal person would carry. On the other hand the person who lost 40k might be appreciative enough to reward me if they were nice.

Keeping it would be fucking stupid. Illogical, even. That amount of cash doesn't just "disappear". It has nothing to do with morality - it is cold hard logic. Keeping it would give you millions of more problems than being broke.

However if there was absolutely zero chance of ever being caught and no one would know you took it... Then that is a better question. Maybe. But probably not. I am doing okay financially and I would probably feel horrible for the rest of my life if I took it. But then again, if it was 40K in a backpack then I highly doubt that money was for a good cause.

Yeah, I'd return it. I could use the money more than anything right now but I couldn't have that weight on my conscience if I knew somebody else was going hungry because of me.

Granted I'd take it to the police and hope nobody came for it 90 days later but that's about it. If I'm wrong about that, correct me.

I would return it. I would feel terrible if I took the money and later found out that it was going to be used for a greater good or it was all the money someone had to live on for a year.

Would I fuck over the type of people who carry $40,000 in cash? No, I don't think I would.
This is pretty much my reaction to the question, I mean as a pure morality thing I'd probably take the money. But when you consider the possible ramifications it just doesn't seem worth it. It would be a nice chunk of money but not worth the risk IMO.

In a backpack.

...just sitting there.

Think who would have a backpack with 40000 in it. Nobody.

I have no idea what I'd do.

If I could return it myself, I'd do that. If I had to give it to the police I'd take 5k or so because I don't know if it's going to make it back to the owner. Or I might even just deposit it in a bank account and if it came up, I'd return the money but keep the interest.

I would take it to the police, odds are I'll get it back after 120 days they have to give it back to the "finder" ie. me. After all, it's most likely drug money, so they won't be filing a report to get it back.

I'd keep it and spend it all on Games Workshop products, it just seems like the right thing to do in this situation.
So that would get you what, about half a full army these days? XD

Return it to WHOM? If there is no way of indicating who it belongs to then I sure as hell am not going to turn it in to the authorities. I vote keep it, and go through each bundle to make sure there is no electronic tracking device so I don't have to tangle with the creepy guy from No Country For Old Men.

I would definitely take it. Go to a remote place where I'd transfer all the money to another bag, dump the backpack, go to another remote place. Bury the money, and only go there every once in a while to dig it up, get some money, and bury it again!

I honestly don't think I would be tracked and killed if I just took it home, but why worry about it. This way I'm 99% sure I'm safe!
