I always build my own computer. Gets MUCH cheaper and customisable... Also I'm kinda "geeky" when it comes to buying a whole new setup. I (honestly) love very little more than I love to browse components, look at tests, compare prices and build a good computer for the lowest price I can.

Bought the components and put it together myself. Have it about 1 1/2 years now and the only upgrade so far was an additional HD.

Built mine for just over $600, if I remember correctly.

-GIGABYTE GA-MA78GM-S2H AM2+/AM2 AMD 780G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
-EVGA 512-P3-N861-AR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
-Antec earthwatts EA430 430W Continuous Power ATX12V v2.0 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - Retail
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX6000CZBOX - Retail
-G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK - Retail
-Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

I bought a cheap case and and extra fan, too. Already had a monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse, so that wasn't an issue.

It's not bad. Not top of the line, by any stretch, but it performs rather well.

I built mine, if you're interested in the parts:
Some random Dual-Channel, SLI-enabled AM2+ motherboard,
AMD X2 5000+ Black ed. CPU,
nVidia GeForce 8600 GT GPU,
2 Gigabytes of nondescript dual-channel RAM (which is functional, so yay.)
Seagate Barracuda 500GB hard drive (purchased later.)
Some old 420w PSU
Ultra X-Blaster case (with clear side panel) (sounds nerd-o-matic, doesn't it?)

When you say self build, do you mean like i chose the parts myself and had someone assemble it, or that i've assembled it myself?

When i bought my comp i chose all the parts myself, but seeing as the company that sold it would assemble it for no additional cost, i just let them do it to save the time.
I consider Choosing the parts more important than the actual assembly, its really easy to assemble a Computer I can put one together in about 30-45 mins

Thought so, was just not sure whether you wanted to know how handy people where or whether they cared about choosing parts themselves
I just like to know, its also fun to see whos computer can beat whos computers ass
Oh, then i guess i gotta add my hardware ad well, though i guess i forgot to put an ass on my comp. well here goes.

Intel core 2 2.4 ghz quad core
4x1 Gb DDR2 RAM
Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 8800 gtx (which i recently found out recieves too little power :S)

put it together in september 2007

Pre-built dell from before I had any reasonable knowledge of computers. Since then I've upgraded all the core components and peripherals.

My brother built our old desktop computers, then uni happened, been cheap I bought his old mac PowerBook G4. Then I learned rather quickly it wasn't so cheap -_-" Still three years on it's still going strong so I'm getting value for my money. Then the household went mac crazy. Got an 24 - inch imac, basic model, dunno why though, dad's the only one that uses it (he bought it) and it's more of a case of: "Oooo what does this button do!?" but he does like photography so he's always working on his many many many photos.

Not the case, picking out my case was the funnest experience evarr, well it would have been if my mom wasnt saying "ohhh shiny, ohhhh a clear one, ohhh this one comes in purple" every two seconds and ignoring the HUGE price tag

Is ATI better than nVidia, i've always liked nVidia better because their system is alot easier to follow (as in witch card is better)

For me yes, ATI is better, but nowadays it's more a question of your personal taste.
You can get an ATI card much cheeper than an equivalent nVidia card for example.

I guess I should vote Pre-built and then customised but that's just because I wanted to pick up a sweet pair of speakers in town and the fact that my video card had to be replaced. I intend to improve it a bit in the future though.

Because of this thread, I went to newegg and built a dream system. Anyone want to give me $3,300? I went kind of over the top, since it was a what if system. I mean, two 1TB hard drives in an external hot swappable enclosure for storage? Would love to. And a 30' monitor, too, because I could. Dual 1GB SLId video card? Yeah.

Now I'm slightly depressed, because I want the computer I just built. I need a hug. But a hug still won't give me that computer.

Also, I noticed, when looking for monitors, that there weren't many options for swivel displays. Is that going by the wayside? I have it on my current monitor, and really like it when I'm reading webcomics and the like. Will I have to grab my dad's widescreen monitor when he upgrades if I want to hold on to that ability?
