This is all a bunch of garbily gook to me. But I know my computer's got lights on it so it must be good.

I don't even know what the hell a Duo and Quad are. Do they have something to do with 2 (Duo) and 4 (Quad) of something?
Duo and Quad refer to the number of processors newer computers have. Duo means two and Quad means four. So '2.4 GHz Duo' has two linked processors, each with 2.4 GHz.

HDD is the hard drive space (Hard Disk Drive), RAM (Random Access Memory) is the amount of temporary, fast to read and write data storage usable by the system for applications, temporary files, temporary files of applications etc. If the computer runs out of available RAM, it can create a seperate file (called Paging File) on the HDD to act as a addition. But using HDD for this purpose is many, many times slower than RAM (the data being physically written and read to/from the HDD).

Most current day from-the-shelf computers come with 4-8 GB of RAM, of DDR 2 or DDR 3 variety. The DDR 2 is a slightly older technology base and will slowly fall out of use just as it's predecessors have. DDR 3 based RAM is still more expensive but is based on more refined technology.

Windows Vista recommends a minimum of 4GB for baseline use. Win XP has been known to work with as little as 128 MB (or about 0.125 GB, 1GB being 1024 MB)

The Graphics cards can be a bit more problematic, with a generational switch currently going on. Even I have little clue as to the intricasies of how they are currently named.

Antec 900
Asus P5N-E SLI Mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo e6420 OC'd to 3.2 with Silent Knight sink
Dual EVGA 8800 Ultras Running PHYSX
Kingston 6GB DDR2-800
2 WD 500GB drives seperately formatted.
950-Watt Modular PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Built in 2007 for slightly over $1000
(Although need to replace mobo... North-Bridge is not capable of handling the Ultras)\

Core 2 Quad is a waste of money as the Duo out-performs it. If you need/want quad go i7.

GPU: Nvidia 8800 GT 512MB
CPU Intel Duo Core @ 3.00GHz
RAM 2 x 1GB OCZ
450W Corsair Power Supply
250GB Hard-drive
Had Windows Vista Premium, but went back to XP SP2

I bought this computer for $500 (CND, about $550 USD) November 2008. I still consider it top of the line because it can run any game at max settings. I don't care what the "hardcore" PC gamers say, when you can run Crysis on Highest settings, you've got a keeper.

Personally I prefer dual core systems for gaming, simply because they currently have far better support and I've had no issues with my dual core. One of my friends has a quad core and most of his software doesn't recognize it. I suppose it'll catch on later in time, but as of now, my PC is great for gaming and everything else.

I've got Quad because because this particular computer was a damn good deal. I always presumed quad was better because obviously Duel = 2 and Quad = 4, but after looking at this I'm not sure :S

Can some kind soul explain the difference to this computer illiterate dumb dumb?
the duo and quad refers to the number of processor cores essentially the more cores the more different things your pc can process at once

My computer is crap. It's about 5 years old and the disc drive just crapped out on me. Here are the specs, if you must know...

CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 2800 MHz
RAM Speed: 512 Mb
OS: Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: Intel 82865G Graphics Controller
3D Accelerator: Intel Extreme Graphics 2
Hard Drive: 35 GB

I really need a new one. Next computer I get is going to be powerful enough to play 2 games of Crysis at the same time.

Bought mine in January, replaced it a month later when my wonderful father ran it over with his car. At least it was an accident. My specs:
HP Pavilion dv6 1030-us
Run of the mill Core 2 Duo processor
4 GB ram
300 GB HDD
P.O.S. integrated intel gma 4500HD video card. did i mention it sucks?
Vista

Overall I'm pretty happy with it, it just sucks when I play games older than my laptop and it lags bad.

How dare you! I am the only one who is allowed to have the word 'Six' in my name!

OT: I'll just stick with the Duo that I've got.

Mine says "ADVENT QUADCORE" on the front, so I'm guessing Quad, my computer's dying at the moment though.

Case: Generic
PSU: 460w (will upgrade soon)
CPU: AMD Phenom II 940
GPU: GeForce 9800 (again, will upgrade soon)
HDD: 2 x 1tb
RAM: 4gb DDR2 1066mhz

Unsure of cost. Wouldn't be much more than $1k AUD because I sold my old bits to my brother to make him a computer.

Would like to change the case to a Mini-ATX one that houses normal sized PSUs and, while doing that, get a new PSU (at least 600w) and new video card (probably GeForce 275 or so) but would have to get a new motherboard to fit it in said case. Being that I'm not rich and there are meant to be 6 core CPUs coming out at the end of next year, I might just do the video card and PSU.
