I love Steam. I've had it for over ten years and ever since that, I stopped buying physical copies. Lately, though, Steam has been rubbing me the wrong way. I don't bother to mention it on here because it just turns into a fight with fanboys, and no matter what I say, I'm sure someone out there will always have their own blind opinion on it.

Steam has been fantastic for my gaming. The sales they offer and the general convenience of the service is great. I wont bother listing my installed games but I own a few hundred 45 are installed now demanding more immediate attention if and when I get around to them.

Steam is far from perfect of course. Out of all of the game service sites I've worked with (Blizzard, Origin, GoG, Humblebundle, etc) Steam is easily the worst when it comes to customer service. I also feel they employ shady ethical practices that are entirely legal but awful. For example they will not give consumers updated information on the compatibility of their games with future operating systems. So buying an older game is a shot in the dark and customer service is often useless or will downright never respond to your concern (at least in my case). It can take hours of reading forum threads to get some of the older games working.

From there you have the issues highlighted beautifully by Jim Sterling on his channel. His early access and squirty plays showcase many of the problems that go along with little to no quality control and steam greenlight service. These tend to be behind the scenes issues with the service as the average user of Steam is probably just buying the occasional game and playing it.

As of 2014 I largely stopped shopping through Steam. I'd rather give my business to other bundle sites, Origin, GoG and the like when able. I still buy the occasional game off steam and I absolutely use them a games catalog. Getting a steam key when purchasing games elsewhere is a benefit in my eyes.

So yeah, fantastic service all around.
I can only hope it stays around for the rest of my lifetime.

It's almost been a year since I installed Steam, and I've got to say that it's been pretty good to me. Most of the games I have, I've gotten on sale. (Arkham Knight and Skyrim I got on other sights. Green Man Gaming and G2A respectively.) I honestly thought PC gaming discs were dead. I still prefer disc for my console gaming. For PC I'll stick with what I've got. Sure I can't sell them back, but when you're buying games for $5-15 I don't think resell is an issue.

Steam has informed me of games I never knew exisited, and thus I don't view it as an evil thing. Not the greatest thing in the world, but a decent one.

As for whether or not is Steam is any good or not and what it's brought to gaming: I'd say Steam's alright. I mean, the lack of quality control means that it has become a dumping ground for naff games but on the flip side it gives a fantastic platform for finding the absolute gems. I don't really use Steam enough to think much more of it than that to be fair.

Well it's... convenient. But who knows what will happen to online DRM in a decade or two down the road. A lot of older games don't work on new systems at all, despite being sold, and even some recent ones with the defunct Games for Windows - LIVE (like Bulletstorm). In addition to Gamespy going down recently, not all games got integrated into Steam multipalyer. So the possibilities to lose your games/functions are very real.

My library used to be like 85% retail copies having code, but nowdays I play with indie titles a lot.

I've got 30(out of 253) games installed at the moment. I would have way more but I had to reinstall windows on the main drive, so it's mostly just the "essentials" and what was installed on my other two drives.

I'm too lazy to type the whole list, so I've just taken a screenshot. Ones marked with a red bit are currently at 0 or less than an hour played. I just can't seem to "get into" games nowadays and just stick with Football Manager, if I really must play something.

I prefer GOG because I like the "freedom" compared to Steam. Steam is pretty great though, it's very functional and of course the sales.
