It's a tough choice. I do think in stealth games you should not be seen but you also shouldn't be punished with death if you make a mistake(ok, maybe on the harder settings). I think Thief did it the best as far as mechanics but Hitman did it best as far as realism. You should be able to kill at least one guy that saw you (either in a duel or as he is running to the alarm). If you mixed Theif's stealth mechanics with Hitman's ability to put on a disguise then I think you would have one of the best stealth games ever.

This may not be true stealth, but when you're at the right end of a sniper rifle you can easily be too far away from your opponents for them to notice you.

Love windwalkers in DotA.

Metal gear is the only game where I like to sneak about(other than splinter cell) and I tend to take the chokehold method. I like to look the badass.

In MGS4 I only play while attempting to stealth through without being caught, and under no circumstances will I kill, it makes the game too easy and boring if you start killing people.

However, I prefer high intensity sneaking, where it isn't choosing the right path but the timing and skill you exert like in Ghilles in the Mist/All Ghilled up in CoDQuad. That was much more intense that ever seeing an exclamation point pop up above someone's head. The timing and slow, steady voice of the Scottish badass resting in front of you.
Ah, that mission, one of the most intense and atmospheric parts of any fps I have ever played, possibly my favorite mission in any fps.

I kill when I must, and no more. Playing Hitman: Blood Money, I only killed my targets, and the people necessary to stay undercover with new costumes. I almost never actually fired a weapon. Instead, I preferred to go in with wire and choke my targets.

I like to creep through the shadows, stalk my prey, emerge only to finish off a kill, then resume my stealthy ways. And if I can just sneak past someone to the next objective, I see it as a mark of honor.

a good STEALTH game should be more sneaking than killing. that is the point after all.
i do like the multiple approach option however. sometimes i feel like seeing if i can get by an entire room of guards undetected (like trying to sneak out of that base in Fallout 3) and sometimes i'd rather just kill anything that moves.

I've loved to play stealth games. They are among my top favorites.
I've seen a lot of complaints that "too much" firepower loses the incentive to actually sneak. So whats the point? the point of a stealth game is to sneak right?
The point, to me at least, is less about having incentive to sneak, but respecting the art that is stealth. The sweet subtly of a well placed movement, or a clever plan fall into place is what makes the game, the art, incredible. The point is to up hold the integrity of stealth and subtly.
I have retried countless mission to make it perfect, even if it was just because an enemy was possibly aware of my presence. It is about being nothing and everything in your environment. You are nothing to those around you, but you are everything to the mission, to the objective. Leave everything the way it was, and never make yourself a threat. On the subject of killing: kill when you must? Kill if its your objective, but otherwise there is never a must. A subtle death just a kill, which makes you a killer, not a shadow.
Stealth, in my opinion, is an art that is learned and felt.

4 words: don't step on me

Invisible. Camouflage.

Like on splinter cell, when i hide in the dark corner and the guard walks like inches away. We need new stealth games, because that isn't realistic.

When playing Splinter cell I use three weapons, silenced pistols, sticky cams, and bricks. If I wanna knock someone out and hes alone BUT hes under a light I throw the brick it hits him in the head, I shoot the light. and hide the body IN PLAIN SIGHT placing a sticky cams near his body, if a guards finds him he'll usually call someone to help him, run over to the body and POOF! goes the knock out gas. By the time someone comes by theres noBODY there (hehehe, what? I thought it was funny).

Stay like a shadow, sneak up upon an unsuspecting enemy, then blow their head off with a high-powered rifle! After that, remaining undetected is sort of a bonus.

In, say, Splinter Cell, I tend to do it like this. First, I survey a new area, being sure to notice every guard, camera, light, or other hazard. Then, I trace my route (i.e "I can sneak past him", "I'll snipe him", "I think I can sneak past him, but I'll load a Sticky Shocker just in case", "I'll jam that light before I get there, then run past the guard who goes to investigate", etc).
